Crystal Village and Lunch with Silent Bob

Dearest Friends,

Hello there. Today is a big day; my last day at home before I leave for Canada for two months. Scrubs has wrapped for the season, I had a couple of weeks off, and now it's time to start "The Last Kiss".  Those of you who are truly interested can rent the Italian film, ">"L'ultimo Baccio".  That's the film ours is adapted from.  Paul Haggis, who wrote "Million Dollar Baby" did the adaptation and I tweaked the dialogue a little bit.  I'm really excited about this movie.

I met with Kevin Smith yesterday at his house to discuss "Fletch" and/or other projects.  He's such a cool guy. He cooked me lunch!  It was really awesome to sit down with someone who's had so much success and still acts like a regular guy from Jersey. I jokingly told him I wanted to make "Garden State" action figures. (Because he's got figures from every one of his movies.) He told me he'd put me in touch with the guy who does his. So who knows, I think it would be pretty cool to have a Sam action figure...

The Gavin video is finally done. You can see it on aol exclusively right now, but it's gonna premiere on TRL next week. So please VOTE for it, so people actually get a chance to see all the hard work that went into it. It stars Gavin, Jamie King and Donald Faison.

Also, the amazing Web Guys who created this site were nominated for a Webby Award for their design. Please VOTE for them to win because they did such an amazing job. (They were the ones who told me what a blog was!)  I'm gonna enlist their help to move this blog over to my own site soon.  I own www.zachbraff.com and pretty soon I'm going to launch some cool ass thang over there.

I got to speak to my alma mater, Northwestern this past week.  It was really surreal to go back and speak to all these students and have them actually interested in what I had to say.

Best birthday present: a drum set.
Freakiest present from a fan: a sweater for my dog with his name sewn into it.
Best show on tv: Project Greenlight on Bravo

Song of the DAY:  "Crystal Village"  by Pete Yorn

Take a deep breath and realize how completely insane it is that you're alive.

Peace and love,

Awesome.

I'm a big fan of Garden State. This is my first time here, looks like I'm lucky to be near the top, seeing as how there are 10 million posts normally.

Anyway, keep up the good work...and all that other stuff you hear all the time :)

Posted by: drew | Apr 22, 2005 3:16:11 PM

Garden State action figures would be hilarious. I'm glad that you like Pete Yorn also, crystal village is one of my favorite songs. What was the problem with last week's Scrubs 4/19 it just seemed really off, like some writing change. It's my favorite show on TV and usually you guys are always on. I've heard Kevin Smith is really nice. That's it.

Posted by: Aaron | Apr 22, 2005 3:17:33 PM

Wow Zach I'm sooo excited your coming to Canada! I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time in this grand land of ours ^_^ I heard Gavin's song the other day on the radio it is absolutly magnificent and I'll go see him when he's in the Toronto area.
hahahha you should make Garden State action figures! I'd buy all of them and keep them on their own special shelf. I'm sure The Last Kiss will be a hit and I promise to go see it on opening day....though I must confess the movie I'm most excited about seeing is Chicken Little because the animation looks wicked.

By the by any hints for what will happen next season on Scrubs? ^_~

Peace luv and elephant ears!
~Janessa

PS: Elephant ears (aka Beaver Tails) are a common Canadian treat that are super yummy so be sure to try one while you're here.

Garden State action figures would be most awesome.

Wow, Zach, that was an astounding video. I loved the end - I have to be honest, I was waiting to see how it would be a "dream" of some sort, but it was still very moving.

Have tons of fun in Montreal! I hope you can pick up on some french speaking skills so you can chat with us french-canadians :)

I saw Gavin DeGraw in concert last week and he was amazing, I love the video (best part = NYC coming down in the window + Donald's part, I was so happy when I saw him in the video, haha)

Je t'aime! (but not in a creepy way)

Hi, ZB, I’m writing from Argentina (you know, that country at the other extreme of the continent). Oh oh, I bet you’ve just thought, “Don’t cry for me, Argentina”, didn’t you?
Anyway…
Garden State has not been out on movies theatres here (yet?), but I had the chance to watch it on DVD a couple of weeks ago, and being a screenwriter myself, I just wanted to tell you that I found your movie to be really inspiring for me. And I think that’s the best compliment a storyteller can get.
So you can imagine me watching your film, thinking what a great story, how simple and yet how much layers it has and how beautifully told… then thinking: man, I whish I could write something like that, and finally getting depressed thinking how you’re about my age and you’ve already wrote and directed this movie… who am I kidding? I’ll never be there… Should I keep thanking you?
I’ m just joking. Besides, I’m still a few years younger than you so I have time to make it happen.
I’ve really enjoyed it, identify with the characters, laughed a lot, cry in one part (the hug, when Largeman hugs Sam’s mom) and just because it was genuinely moving not because you manipulate the scene with music, great gestures or anything like that (something I got tired of a long time ago).

Lately I’m all about this kind of movies that tell stories about people, real people… like Sideways or Wes Anderson’s movies (with their strange atmospheres, but still human) or Lost in translation. And I love Charlie Kauffman, isn’t he one of the greatest? I’d like to recommend you an argentine movie that was release in USA: “Lost embrace”, I think you’ll enjoy it. It has some similar points to G.S.

Congratulations on getting your talent on the right track.

Camila.

I really appreciate you filling in your fans on what you are up to and new music that you are listening to. I really enjoy checking out the music you suggest. However, I thought that you might enjoy receiving some cool music yourself. You should check out Phoenix, Kasabian, and West Indian Girl. Thay are all really great bands that more people should check out. Thanks again for taking time out of your schedule to keep up this blog! Good luck on your upcoming projects!

Posted by: Jennifer | Apr 22, 2005 3:27:25 PM

fantastic video Zach. A friend of mine sent me the link. She had a few reservations about it (it's definitely not your typical pop music video), I applaude your efforts at putting some bigger ideas in there. The revolving sets and video screen crowd were very postmodern of you ;) good luck on your future projects!

Oh my gosh - and now I've gone and embarrassed myself by using piss poor grammar. In my previous comment, I meant "We're your age" not "We're you are age". Silly me. Just forget about that and keep the kudos.

yay, a new post and I'm so near the top of the comments. today is my lucky day. I found two silver quarters AND I finished a whole crossword puzzle all by myself today-- thats the first time ever for me. I'm really excited about it.
