Shredding Waves With a Golden Girl

Hello everyone,
Sorry it's been so long since I last posted. My schedule has been pretty crazy with Scrubs and Chicken Little and now the beginning of Garden State's journey to other continents. I spent saturday morning talking to some very friendly reporters from Australia and New Zealand. This fall I will be going to Europe, Australia and South America during all my breaks from Scrubs.

Again I want to thank you all for all the amazingly nice comments you have posted on this site. I do read them all even though it's frustrating that few of you seem to believe me. Let's try a little game: let's see if we can make it through one exchange of posts and comments without one person writing (even as a joke) "I know you're not reading this but..." Now it's gonna be very hard for some of you who love to post witty things not to write, "I don't believe your eyes are gazing at these words..." But let's just play a game and see if it's possible. I'm not sure that it is.

In this game, you trust me when I tell you I read your comments.

Answers to Questions:

The Kato reference is to O.J.'s pool-house dwelling sidekick.

The song at the beginning over the plane crash is a Hindu prayer to Ganesh. I heard it and thought it was both haunting and beautiful at the same time.

The reason Alexi Murdoch's song "Orange Sky" isn't on the soundtrack is because it was on the soundtrack to a popular show on the Fox network entitled, "The O.C." I haven't seen this program, but as I understand it, it's about a young woman who wants to go to rabbinical school but is forbidden since she is a woman. So she dresses up like a man - wait no, that's "Yentl". Shit. I'm not sure what it's about, but anyway the soundtrack folks decided to leave it off.

Bea Arthur and I spent the holiday weekend boogie boarding.

A great sad song to listen to over and over when you're in the sad song on repeat mood is: Rachael Yamagata, "The Reason Why". Please buy it on iTunes and don't steal it. Not for any other reason than if you're reading this I like you and I don't want your Karma to get all fucked up because you stole a song from a struggling artist.

Peace and love,
ZB

Hey man-

First off i love scrubs alot. But i'm curious if there's a nationwide release date for Garden State?
I live in montana and i'm really wanting to see the movie.

Hey Zach, great blog.

I'm glad you and Bea Arthur had such a wonderful weekend together ;)

Posted by: Briar | Sep 12, 2004 8:02:45 PM

Zach--
You continue to amaze me with your talent and sense of humor. I took a friend to see Garden State this weekend and he loved it as much as I do. I am also recommending the film to anyone who hasn't seen it. I am very glad it is opening overseas as my friend is studying abroad this semester and I want her to be able to see the film. Also, Scrubs is funnier than ever! I love it so much and am looking forward to the dvd. Hope you and Bea had a great time boogie boarding! Best of luck to you!
Love, Janelle

I wasn't planning on commenting but I had the opportunity to be first so this is it.

Hey it'd be cool to be the first to post so I'll try to be quick.

Great movie, man. Soundtrack is good. I also want to be a writer...and with GARDEN STATE you proved that if "you write what you know" you can get some damn good stuff....My scriptwriting professor is telling us not to write about our own lives, because "nobody gives a crap." Well, apparently, somebody does if GARDEN STATE is so successful. And yeah, I know it's not all autobiographical but I am guessing alot of those comments from the characters in the movie about "what you doing in hollywood, largeman?" was inspired by maybe your old friends questioning you about your goings-on pre-SCRUBS.

Anyway, good luck in the future.

By the way Zach, do you follow football at all? Who is the team(s) to beat this year? I am in some football pool which is funny since I know nothing about it. But since you are so wise, you came up with the most brilliant movie ever, I'd be glad to take your advice.

Posted by: Janelle | Sep 12, 2004 8:05:20 PM

Zach, I adore you to bits. If your star ever fades, for the love of God, please don't ever let me catch you on Surreal Life. If things get tough, drop me a line and I'll forward you some cash.

Love,
Julie

awesome movie. first time in a while that a film's touched my heart so much. so.. thank you.

and out of curiousity, how is bea arthur's boogieboarding skills?

Posted by: Kristen | Sep 12, 2004 8:07:56 PM

hey zach,
i just wanted to let you know that i think Garden State is an amazingly powerful piece of film and i thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. i think it is one of the smartest movies i've seen this year. i am now falling in love with the idea of falling in love, thanks to you.

best wishes.

p.s. i love scrubs;)

Dear Zach,

Im excited because I think this is the firs post of the day/ night. I like the game a lot ( and don't worry I am not going to spoil it--that is if you keep your word) I have been posting this question and I seem to be getting no response but I shall try again...
Since Garden State is based on parts of your life when you were in your 20s does Sam have any real relevancy? Is she based on someone in particular?
Thanks so much,
Emily, CA

Zach, I know you read this but you didn't answer my question from a couple entries ago.
Did you shave your chest for the premiere episode of Scrubs?
LOL.
I enjoyed watching your interview on Last Call with Carson... your look of shock when he totally dissed his ex-finance was priceless.
Ahh.. Jewish boys make the world go round.

Posted by: Alex | Sep 12, 2004 8:10:00 PM

Zach, I just wanted to let you know that you can add me to the list of many that have been forever changed by your movie. I've always been a lover of movies, but never did i imagine that a movie could have such a profound efffect on me. Simply put, thank you.

P.S. The frou frou album "details" has been constantly in my cd player which freaked out my friends since i tend to be a hard rock kind of guy, thanks for ruining my street cred, :P

I'm 38 years old; I've never been depressed (to speak of) or had tragedies befall. I've always been pretty happy - albeit somewhat of a cynic (but I can see humor and irony in that). For the past year and a half, though, I have been "mad, crazy tired" due to circumstances pretty much beyond my control and movies are a great escape. Sitting in a large dark room with people I do not know and letting myself get completely absorbed by what is on screen - it's like I'm in it. All of it. Every single bit of it.
Last Sunday, I saw Garden State.
Monday, I saw it again.
"It is impossible to say just what I mean" except thank you. Thank you. You have a gift, an amazing gift in that you, through your work, are able to make people feel and, in the end, that is all we have.
I am now, and ever will be, grateful.

hi zach. i live in wv in a very small town not cool enough to have garden state. so my friends and i drove a few hours to go and see it and i'd do it again everyday until its out on dvd. it was wonderfully made and the best movie i've seen. i'm stopping now so i will have a chance of posting on 11:11. ah, i think i missed it.. have a wonderful year.

Posted by: heather | Sep 12, 2004 8:13:04 PM

i saw garden state for the sixth time tonight. i'll probably see it for the seventh time sometime this week because i like the number seven better than six.

i want to write a screenplay now, but i promise i won't try and get you to listen to me about it. i mean, i am an english major, so i'm supposed to want to write things. right?

in re: to a much earlier post... could you please come over and tickle my roommate and i at washington college in maryland sometime? yeah. there's a lot of girls here who need a good tickle.

surely, i jest.

i had to ask my mom about the kato reference by the way. that was after the third or fourth time. silly generational differences! i was only like seven during that whole ordeal, i think?

at the risk of being corny, thanks for being... unique?

Posted by: lindsay | Sep 12, 2004 8:13:05 PM

Wow, THE Bea Arthur? That must have been awesome.

I haven't seen your movie yet, I'm waiting until I'm no longer poor (damn you university tuition!), but I've been eager to see it since I first heard about it!

Posted by: Laura | Sep 12, 2004 8:13:05 PM

to mr.Zach Braff

first off great great film, ive seen it twice already and im going for a third time very soon. anyway i saw the season premiere of scrubs and the scene where turk and j.d are doing stunts on the vespa scooters was hilarious ive never laughed so hard.
keep up the great work

Posted by: Josh | Sep 12, 2004 8:13:16 PM

Not that it ever WILL happen, but dude, TOTALLY go on "Surreal Life." I'd like a glimpse into 12 days in the life of Bea and Zach. And that Humpty guy from Digital Underground. Anyway, Thank you for bein' a friend... (doo doo doo doo)

Posted by: Sandy | Sep 12, 2004 8:13:41 PM

Chicken Little? I know you ARE reading this (that's the reason I'm writing this dang thing). I've always loved movies and making movies, but you'r movie was the thing that made me actually take my love of movies into action. I just want to say thanks for doing such a great job of portraying loneliness in a crowd, and the emotions of realizing that you have no idea who the people you grew up with actually are until you really start to listen to them. Also, please tell me when the garden state dvd comes out.

Posted by: Murkle | Sep 12, 2004 8:14:01 PM

what an absolutely beautiful film. wonderful writing, wonderful acting...humorous and touching... and inspiring. thank you for blessing the world with this movie.

Posted by: philip likens | Sep 12, 2004 8:14:10 PM

hey there zach!

The soundtrack is absolutely amazing! Zach, you're so cool! I'm so glad Garden State is taking you to foreign and new places.
