Stir Crazy in French Canada
You know you're bored out of your mind when you're watching Rob and Amber get married! Filming a movie in a foreign city can be hard sometimes when you quickly run out of things to do. On GS, I was in Jersey and NYC and I know my way around those places. But there's not too much going on on a Tuesday night in Montreal. Those of you who live here, please feel free to go nuts telling me all the things I should do. Please leave out carriage rides, drum circles, the biodome, the casino and Cirque du Soleil. I've done them all. Not really, but I had this twisted nightmare once where I was dating a really bitchy Clydesdale who played drums in wedding band; anyhoo one night (high on laced feed) she lost all my savings in a heated round of Bacarat, so we had to live in the Winter quadrant of a biodome. You wanna hear a horse complain- stick'em in an artificial winter in a Canadian biodome. "My hooves, my hooves!" "Shut-up, you whore! You're the one who smoked bad feed." Sorry - Anyhoo, we lived on ice and learned to Juggle and manipulate our bodies to Enya. --- So anyway... that's why I feel like I've done them all. There's a New Chicken Little trailer up. Check it out.
Please vote for me and Natalie for the MTV Movie Awards HERE. I'll post soon. Probably next week during "Rob and Amber Get Divorced." Peace, love, and a toothy smile. ZB Zach

That's crazy. I was just reading the last post, when suddenly the page refreshed on its own and a new one popped up. What are the odds? Hmmm...

wow!! first one to comment!, looking forward to chicken little, i am going to school for computer animation and this movie looks beautiful!, Picked up Scrubs on DVD gotta say you do an amazing job on that show. funnest show on tv as Katherine Heigl said on the view, seems she was also a big fan of yours

Peter just wasted the first comment. I think I should have the first comment awarded to me retroactively.
There are many Jewlicious things to do in Montreal, so the next time you find yourself there, give my Jewlicious dot com friends a call and they'll take care o' ya, right and propa.
You and Nat are shoo-ins. (Shoos-in? Where's my English teachers when I need them? Oh, ask your brother Josh, he must know...)
PS, if you ever want to be interviewed for my NY Jewish Week Singles column, holla back, brutha.

hey! 2nd comment, or maybe further down cause i took too damn long to write this. love your work, quickly becoming one of my fav. actors, but Michael J. Fox is still on tops. whats going on with scrubs!?!?!? heard its on hiatus, whats up with that??? you should do bootleg scrubs, with a homeaid camera in your basement if they don't bring it back, and then air it on the internet! good luck with your movie, can't wait to check out,
peace

Hi Zach I know this is sort of cheesy but I just wanted to say thank you for being such a cool, normal person. I've always wanted to be a writer and I've decieded to follow my passion, in major part due to you. I just hope I can be as down to earth as you are if I'm lucky enough to be as talented as you are.
OH and you know you're adorable right?
Posted by: Jessica | May 24, 2005 9:28:37 PM
Wow, can't believe I am close to the top of the list - Very cool.
Zach, I hope you find more exciting things to get up to in Montreal than watch bad TV... Old Montreal is amazing - check it out if you haven't. You could always come to Toronto if you are bored...
Oh, and I love Scrubs by the way, as a med student I can relate (and Garden State too of course!). Anyhow, it is back to the books for me - Goodnight!

Hey Zach,
I hear you're going to be in Chicago for an AXE party - I hope to hell its true. I must take advantage of the opportunity to have your babies - although this may prove difficult as I am both unavailable and male - but I'll give it the 'ol college try. Keep up the good work - the scrubs DVDs kick ass. Peace out girlscout - JH

when i was visiting the pier was the cool place to be. check out something called "the labrynth". it a huge warehouse that is a human maze with puzzles to solve. lots of fun. and the nightlife aint that bad either, good bars and usualy a party at the top of some building with spotlights.
keep up the good work.

hello . . . so, years ago ben affleck was filming in montreal and ended up going out to some random bar that no one ever went to or had heard of, and then it became THE place to be.
so, i think that you should make it your montreal mission to go find a cool but undiscovered bar or club and make it the new IT place to be! then all of the newly hip patrons can say to one another "you know, zach braff comes here when he's in town." and the owners will love you and a happy ending will be had by all.
otherwise i advise you to eat as much smoked meat as possible.
:)

Bored in Canada ay?? Who would've thunk it! LOL! Well you being bored in Montreal sounds a lot more fun than what I'm doing....watching "The Karate Kid" in my pjs. Well I hope you find something to do! Smell ya later!

Zach, If you are bored & looking for good music, check out this link to one of my favourite Canadian artists - Remy Shand. Track 1 "The way I feel" is amazing.
He wrote, recorded & mixed the whole album at home. It is from 2003, just waiting for new material - but still worth a listen if you haven't before.

Wow... seriously, I thought that I was the only one who fantasized- uh I mean dreamed- about manipulating my body to Enya. That's one kinky mind you've got there, Zachary.
So when are you gonna come out to the West Coast?! Seattle is open and ready for you. Let us teach you how to throw a fish. That'll put some hair on your chest.
You are possibly the wittiest, most enchanting person who I've never even met. Keep up the amazing work.

hmmm. bored in montreal...what to do, what to do...if only you knew some locals to hang out with, eh? i wish i could tell you what to do with your spare time...i wish i had spare time!!! i drink a lot, some nice canadian beer. i quite enjoy moosehead...maybe you should get in touch with locals and see where they hang out (me! me!) for real though, hope you are having a wonderful time in the lovely city. i cannot stop listening to the soundtrack of gs. maybe read this awesome book "into the wild" by jon krakauer...so sick! come to niagara falls, its the american long weekend this weekend, sure to be entertaining. at least you have much music to pass your time (yeah it sucks) the new canadian idol video is on. so terrible. anyhow, take care and if things get really boring, email a local!!

Hey Zach!
If you ever get bored again, just take the 40 highway all the way to Trois-Rivières (about an hour or so) and give me a call! We could spend the night listening music... I work in an HMV store and loved your choices for the Ost of Garden State. You have to take some time to discover Arcade Fire while you're in their hometown, they're simply amazing.
Loved your movie, cried for half an hour after I finished it. I'm forcing all of my friends to watch it with me now, it's to beautiful. I'm also a Scrubs fan, love how the show has evolved and how it's written.
I'll keep an eye on you 'cause you're going to be big, I can sense it... Good luck with everything you do (even though with your talent, you don't need much luck!)
Love, Gen

Hey Zach-
i just wanted to let you know....i got scrubs on DVD & I can't stop watching it; it's addictive. Not that I hadn't seen it before I watched the DVD, but it's addictive all the same. I had never seen the first season though... I love how your character was so sweet and innocent then. It was adorable. Anyway....it's awesome that you continue to write here even though GS has been out for awhile. It always makes me smile when I see a new post. :)
.......An idea to remedy your boredom: Why not take some arty-type pictures of the city (or anything around you.) That usually takes up hours and hours of my time. Later Zach

Been to Canada once ... not as funny as I thought it would be. Guess I based it too much on The Kids in the Hall ... Very clean though.
Naturally the Clydesdale would play the drums ... it already has those snazzy fur-lined (or perhaps fringe-bedazzled) boots that I remember the high school band wore. Pretty proud of myself that I remember anything from high school. LISA

My roomate was an extra in your film (we both go to McGill) and stole a pie of which you had a piece to bring to me, It was rhubarb-apple I think and it was the funniest thing in the world, she just snagged 3/4 of a pie on the way to the washroom from the craft table, classic, we called it the Zach Braff pie untill we ate it (and frankly, I was really disappointed, it was awful). About Montreal, go to Beaux Arts, it's not a great collection but has some nice stuff, and Julet et Chocolat on St. Dennis has killer fondant.
Posted by: S | May 24, 2005 9:45:26 PM
ha I was thinking the same thing switching between the lame donald trump movie and amber and rob getting married, what a lame time it is for tv. I should be studying for my biology final..oh well..I have no idea what you can do in Montreal, but you are in the new US magazine.
Posted by: Ashley | May 24, 2005 9:47:04 PM
HEY,
If your bored do what my brother and I just did, watch the 1984 scifi movie "Dune" its got some big names and will eat 2hours and 16 minutes of your time (warning its really bad)
we are thinking of watching it again only on mute with a pink floyd record on loop. should be entertaining :)
have a good one

Scrubs dvd is awesome.
Also, you should check out Damien Rice (even though I have a feeling you already listen to him) because he's amazing. I'm listening to Volcano right now, and his music seems like the kind of thing you'd be into.
Bloc Party is also fantastic!
Posted by: Katie | May 24, 2005 9:49:13 PM
Hey Zach! lol if you're bored perhaps you could plan out some new Clone High episodes *wink wink*
Ya I saw the Chicken LIttle trailer the other day when surfing around www.comingsoon.com
I watched the whole first season of Scrubs on DVD. *claps* BRAVO! I'm a little miffed that they won't be playing the new episodes till January 2006. :(
Sorry I'm not from montreal so I don't know much of what you can do there. I think in all honesty most young people travel there from Ontario because the drinking age is 19 in Ontario but only 18 in Quebec....well that and strip clubs. Too bad you're filming there in the summer, in the winter they have Carnival' which is the French winter celebration with ice sculptures, maple syrup and a big happy snowman called Bonnome (there are many songs about him). In any case if you do get bored over there and have a lot of free time just jump on a plane or train and spend some time over with us in ye old Toronto. There's ALWAYS something to do in that city.
Peace, Luv and Pancakes!

Oh Zach, there is so much to do here in Montreal! You've got to find the right people to show you where the good stuff is at.
You should always be able to find something random going on downtown- and there's always a bunch of concerts to go to.
Check this out, http://www.pollstar.com/tour/searchall.pl?Content=C-QC_Montreal&StartSearch.x=17&StartSearch.y=19&Date_From=Today&Date_To=05-24-2007&By=City&PSKey=Y
Maybe you'll be able to catch something you like.

Rob & Amber - FEH! KAKA!
Posted by: Vendela | May 24, 2005 9:52:46 PM
All I can say is... go see a French movie without subtitles. Something with Roy Dupuis or Remy Girard. You're a movie guy... do your thing. There's also lots of theatre.
Also, um, well, go have lunch in the red light district at one of the strip clubs. It's weird to say, but it's an experience. It's not winter any more, but you always know it's cold when the hookers show up in parkas. Somehow they're still wearing their stilettos, but hey, a girl's gotta know her limits, right?

jaja wow, you watched them get married? you must have been bored..
i voted while watching Garden State for the 2938492384th time
Posted by: Monica | May 24, 2005 9:53:21 PM
you don't need to be in Montreal to be watching bad TV when you shouldn't be, that seems to be more of an international thing. Of course that could be because there's absolutely nothing good ON TV.(note i would exclude scrubs from that, but it's not shown on TV in Aus)
Garden state has only just come out here on DVD and scrubs will probably take quite a while i imagine, so until then i shall join you in boredom and twiddle my thumbs.
Of course i always get told "the only place you can be bored is between your ears" when i'm bored, so get out and do something!
Have fun wherever you are, try bungee jumping or something else requiring less that complete sanity - works for me ;)

There is a biodome there? Remind me to make fun of my Canucks friends later. A biodome... heavy.

Zach... When are you gonna write and direct something again? I have an idea...
a WHITE TILE blasts onto a BLACK SCREEN--tall 3D letters read--

you could always check out the shopping center underground, that's probably not so cool..or you could even head over to the Nations Capital of Ottawa or even head over to Quebec City.. there are cool places to see ie. Old Montreal, Old Quebec City.. you just gotta find the place YOU want to be.

Have you heard of Slow Reader? They are a great band (I am totally non-affiliated) and one that seems like your style.
Oh, and you are an amazing man with an ingeniously creative mind. Never lose your edge.

Well, I have yet to actually comment in here, but seeing as how this will be the first chance I have to get on the front page, I'm going to.
I actually found myself watching from Justin to Kelly the other night out of boredom. I'm watching Shaolin Soccer now, and that's much better.
I really have no idea of what to say here. Oh, I work at the radio station at my college, and the Garden State soundtrack made it to our top 30 for a few weeks in a row if I'm remembering correctly. Good job.

See, I think my day is all crummy and then I read this and it puts a lovely smile on my face.
Not that your day was worse or anything like that, cause that isn't the case AT all, but just that it was one of those amusing anectdotes that makes me smile.
Yeah, see? That isn't that bad.

Tuesday night in Phoenix isn't any better -- I ended up watching Rob and Amber get hitched, too. And I never even watched fucking Survivor.
Here's to a more interesting Wednesday!

Top fifty? Insane.
Too bad the NHL is on strike, or you could go see a hockey game. I don't even live in Montreal, but since it's in Canada, hockey is the first thing I thought of.
And because, as a Michigan girl, I love hockey and often times pretend Michigan is a part of Canada anyway.
I maintain that an internship on any movie you have any say in should be given to me. Remember, girl at Northwestern whom you've probably forgotten? I'll even help with craft services. It's an important job. Someone has to do it. Just click my name and let your fingers do the talking.
Also, I dropped fifty dollars of grocery money at Borders on the Scrubs DVD. It's better than pirated episodes eating up space on my harddrive.

hey babe!
your dream sounds really fun-- i always have really crazy ones too, but they tend to be very realistic so when i wake up- its actually pretty confusing. sometimes i wish i had crazier ones like i did when i was a kid- my favorite one i remember was when i was flying on a kite, riding it like a ship. i also used to have this reoccuring dream every year on my birthday where me and my dad would go take a flight of stairs into the clouds and there would be a big feast awaiting us and stuff... ya ok sorry to bore you with my dreams..
i just watched Finding Neverland for the second time and still cried! how lame am i. i love that movie though. so good.
some sad news (and also awesome at the same time)- im going to india for 7 weeks and im gonna miss your posts!!! im so disappointed.. but also very thrilled cuz its been 5 yrs since ive seen the motherland heh.. i hope u have a really good time in canada. who knows- maybe i will still be able to get on the net.
u know.. u should come to india- i think ud really like it. :)
thats all for now

Wow, the Amber and Rob wedding? Zach, at least you could have watched that lame ass Britney and K-Fed show. Cheap entertainment I tell ya. I live here in So. Cal so I can't help with Canadian killing time suggestions. Download some music videos, grab a few beers and enjoy! It always works for me. Take care my friend.

Frommers only lists about 20+ things to do. Funny how a city that appears to be a little more famous... isn't really.

The Just For Laugh's Theare...This museum is dedicated to the different genres of humor and comedy.

Lafontaine Park Parc is divided into two halves- English and French. The English side features a serpentine, winding lagoon, while the French side consists of geometric paths and gardens. But then again, I always was a sucker for a place I could go sit under a tree and eat a snack and write. Or go fly a kite!

If all else fails, go find a bunny suit, and walk around taking pictures with strangers. Because what better fun can be had?

What to do in Tuesday night? I have no idea man. I always work the graveyard shift. I never go out.

The must see stop in Montreal is the place now dubbed "The Bordeli", where you can get a chicken sandwich AND a hooker AND internet access!
"Bordeli" is courtesy of Russell (http://www.russellwolff.com), whose album, Karma Co., you should check out. You'll want to direct another video.

"Funny how a city that appears to be a little more famous... isn't really."
GASP! I beg to differ. Montreal is a fantastic city with hundreds upon hundreds of things to do/see. The downtown area has so much culture and so much life that I find it impossible to be bored. If you like museums there are museums. Shopping? It's awesome. Concerts? Shows? It's all there.
But I digress.
You've just got to be looking in the right place.
Posted by: Bianca | May 24, 2005 10:14:35 PM
go see the weakerthans. they're canadian (how much more generic can i be?). and while you're at it, you should listen to them, because they are the best. band. ever.
you can thank me later.

I used to live in Montreal before I moved to Atlanta...
anyhow, here's more things you should try:
botanical gardens, La Ronde (Six Flags), walk around Outremont, since it's beautiful, make sure to stop at the Bilboquet for ice cream (best ice cream or sorbet, the long line is worth it), go to the Belvédères on top of mont royal for an great view, make sure to try smoked meat sandwiches, poutine (fries, cheese and gravy), and the many restaurants...
and don't worry, the many festivals that take place during the summer will start soon
I'm so happy, I'm going to montreal sunday for a month!
Hope you find more things to keep you busy...

zach, you are too darn-tootin' funny. its great that you still update even after all this time... "blogging" is addictive, isnt it? or is it all those i love you comments you get in return?
by the way, i just reread your brothers book (again). its so good. im going to write him a fan letter on pink stationary sprayed with perfume and dot my i's with hearts.

i was thinking the exact same thing as i was flipping through the channels and stopped on 'rob & amber'. funny.

Wow...you must be really bored if you're watching Rob and Amber get married. Go out and get drunk! Just walk away from the TV.
Posted by: Jamie | May 24, 2005 10:30:43 PM
Get Crunk on st. catherines street? Although you don't seem the type. Not that I know you or your type. You may very well love getting crunk.

I couldn't stand watching Rob and Amber so I just turned off the TV, and now I'm reading your blog. I'm sorry to hear that you are bored in Montreal, I'm sure you'll find something somewhat interesting to do.
best of luck :D

Best dream ever. I instinctively wanted to call dibs on using it in a screenplay. And then I remembered you write those, too.
Posted by: Jess | May 24, 2005 10:32:48 PM
It's funny because I said that exact same phrase to my mom today. ("You know you're bored when you're wantich rob and amber get married.") I have a lay over in Montreal on my way to London on June 18th, so we can go get dinner or something? It'll be something new.... hahaha... Quebec is nice, you just have to know where to go, and seeing as I actually live in Texas and not there, I don't know much. But my cousing owns a great bar called Claddaghs (like the ring...) It's a great place to go and other celebrities (Sam Jackson is a regular when shooting) have gone there when they were shooting movies. Celebrities like it because people are pretty respectful of their space. Anyway, hope that relieves some of you're bordeom....

Hey Zach. Would you be interested in seeing an advance copy of my first book, THE REAL MEANING OF LIFE? It'll be out in the fall. Email me back or visit the book's site (realmeaningoflife.com) if you're interested.
Thanks. Have fun in Canada and I'll pass on the word to vote for you.

Ha. Put down the crack pipe, Zach. Or don't, if we get more posts like this.

Here's what you do... Watch bad anime and eat custard-style strawberry yogurt. That's what I'm doing, and, let me tell ya, I'm quite content.
I know what it's like to be stir crazy. I moved from San Diego to Lawson, Missouri. What's that? Never heard of Lawson, MO? Yeah, I think that just about makes my point.

definitely watched rob and amber get married... and i'm glad i wasn't alone... hope you can find something to do that doesn't resemble any horrible nightmares... i know what you can do... get a bear suit.. and just go crazy in the city... bring someone along to tape it... if i could afford one i would do it... something about someone in a bear suit dancing or even just sitting on a bench tickles me inside.
Posted by: britt | May 24, 2005 10:40:25 PM
So I can beat you....instead of Rob and Amber's Wedding I watched the end of Chaotic (the britney spears thing, seriously, don't even try to watch it for 3 minutes, you'll want to scream, laugh, and barf all at the same time) followed by Jenny Mccarthy's new sitcom....long night, while in canada or wherever you are GO BOWLING! It's fun and you can always beat yourself...or just laugh at someone else. Try and have fun!!! Dani T!

i refuse to watch that rob and amber crap! but my roommate tivo'd american idol and i'm watching that now, so i guess i'm not any better.. anyways, i love all that you do.. even when you threaten to punch a 5 year old in the face! what's up with anyhoo? is that a canadian thing.. alright take care!

Hey Zach!
I will shamefully admit that I watched Rob and Amber's wedding too. I need to shower.
Hmm, Montreal usually has some decent shows going on as the music scene is pretty rad over there. I've heard Casino De Montreal is a cool place. And there are a bunch of clubs over there too. But if you really want to have fun, come to the East Coast baby! We know a good time.
I'll be voting for ya!

There is this really great barbecue place there that serves good food.... Only I wouldn't be able to tell you where it is because I don't live there.. But if you find it, definately eat there.
I remember there were stairs.
And long tables.

Hey again Zach,
New Chicken Little trailer! You've just made my night since I can't sleep because I'm FREAKING out about this job interview tomorrow at 8am. This remodeling company is looking for a college student to work for the summer doing marketing. That's exactly me, and my major is marketing!! PRAY I get this job. If not I'll have to spend my summer watching episode after episode of Scrubs, and who wants that right? Just kidding...
PS Is it bad that I don't know who Rob and Amber are?

I posted this comment on your last blog entry - but what are the chances of you getting to comment #930 or whatever.
Okay Zach - here's the deal. I just recently bought the Scrubs DVD. My friend and I had that thing fully watched and analyzed in three days (including a 6 hour non-stop marathon). How did the powers-that-be (ie the DVD producers) think that they could get away with just releasing one season?! We need us some more Scrubs!
Basically - what I'm asking is this - do you have any idea of when seasons two, three and four (probably not for a while on four seeing as how it just wrapped up) will be released? I'm about to go into a relapse here and it ain't gonna be pretty!
Also - we've watched some of the bonus features about you guys talking about the "no asshole" policy and it all being fun and games at Scrubs headquarters - and seeing as how we are not assholes, and we absolutely love fun and games, we decided that we're going to be on the show. So how do we go about doing that? You don't have to tell me here - you can tell me later if you want. The point is - you gotta tell me. Otherwise, we're going to buy some actual scrubs and just sneak on the set. So be prepared.
Te amo mucho,
Caitlin (& Chris - although Caitlin did all the typing - and also she's in love with you - actually, so is Chris)
I hope you like essays.

Hey Zach,
So my friend and I were discussing, and aside from your other excellent qualities, you appear to be one of the few young Heebs in Hollywood (aside from Adam Brody, maybe) who consistently bring our religion into your roles. That's ridiculously admirable. Anyway, my mom saw the pic that I took of us when I met you here in Mtl. She seemed to think you were the perfect height for me. Interesting... I told her to set her hopes aside for my finding a tall Jewish bf since you're apparently dating Mandy Moore, who's also super-cool. Moving on, while in Montreal, take the 1.5 hour drive to Mt. Tremblant. You'll love it. I think. I also hope you've checked out St. Denis above Sherbrooke St, it is more "Mtl" than St. Laurent and screams "Mtl culture". Check out "Eve, the apple of my eye", by X1. A bit on the fromage-side, but a bang-up song nonetheless. You're fab and have turned me into a compulsive blogger.

Bored already?? Come on... Montreal has so much to offer!
Tuesday night is a wild Cafe Campus night for those who like a little 80s music (St.Laurent and Prince Arthur). You should definitely check out Le Swimming on wednesdays for some live music (St. Laurent) I know you like the W on thursdays :)
There's a great jazz bar called Upstairs that has an amazing atmosphere (MacKay st., downtown). Walk along St. Denis on nice nights, and definitely go to the old port. there are so many great places to hang out and to see.
And if you're still bored, i'll try to think up more chill places and i'll let you know thursday when i see you :)

You make me laugh too hard. I always laugh for like 2 minutes after I read your posts...which is quite a long time when you consider that I am sitting in my apartment by myself:). I agree with a post above, you should come to Seattle, it is a fun city and I love living here. I look forward to your next post and I cant wait for you to win a moon man or 2!

I haven't been on here in forever because you almost never update. But today I decided I would see if there is anything new. And to my suprise you updated today! It's crazy! I think we're connected. Oh and I rented Arrested Development season 1 from my video store and I absolutley love it. Haha. Buster is coo coo and Gob and everyone. OMG. I'm addicted to it now. I think you should guest star on it.
Montreal is one of my favorite places. I <3 it there. Have you had any time to do any sightseeing?

And why Rob and Amber? No American Idol? Enjoy whatever is up there in Montreal. It's sort of rainy here in NJ...

haaaaaahaha...I knew I wasn't the only one watching Rob and "Ambaaaaaah" get hitched. I could only take so much before my brain cells started committing suicide, and I started wishing I had watched Chaotic instead.

Wow.. I didn't think the rumors were true, but I finally found the blog! Quite lucky for me..
Zach, you are such a great guy. I adore you on Scrubs, I finally bought Garden State after being poor for the past month (such a beautiful movie.. great job!) and I can't wait for Chicken Little to come out later this year. Do you know if Disney/Pixar is going to promote 'Chicken Little' this summer during San Diego's Comic Convention? It would be great if you were there, not to mention that San Diego's a great place to be!
Well, back to my online randomness. Keep up the great work.. =D.

I just wanted to say how cool it is that you have this blog. You make me laugh and I think you are adorable. I am not much of a TV person but after seeing GS I have been downloading and watching a lot of Scrubs.....umm I mean legally tuning in each week. I also think you have great taste in music. SInce you are in montreal you should listen to arcade fire during your downtime. I dont know if you actually will read this but I will continue to ramble on as if you do. I think that the shins and frou frou should send you a thank you letter because I work in a music store and they have become well known and frequently requested. Its kind of what Mike Nichols did for damien rice. Well, happy movie making,
Your Canadian friend,

Ok man, so all I'm sayin is that whenever you're in NYC, the thing to do is always throw a little West Coast into the mix. And I'm not talking Reaganomics-scary-WestCoast crap, I'm talking form a weird ass super group like Buffalo Springfield and spice up the barrometer a bit. Or...if that's not your thing...just wander around the city around sunset and see what happens. Thanks for excellent acting and all that. Etc.
Peace,

Everyone is wrong. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is terrible. Unless, of course, you like pretentious books with pages of nothing but numbers and random pictures of doorknobs. Your brother's book is much much better.

Sorry to hear you are out of things to do. You should come up to Fairbanks, Alaska.
If you have free time.
However there is not alot to do here either, so I guess you would be right where you started.
Well there is nice looking nature, but I think you have that in Canada too.
Well enjoy yourself anyway, rent videos, watch people when they think no one is looking, or just read a good book.

Hey Zach,
If you're bored in Montreal I can offer you a few solutions:
First: Go grab yourself a smoked meat sandwich. Montreal is famous for Schwartz's, but I think the name has become more important than the quality. I think Smoked Meat Pete's is the best place around. It's in Ile Perot just off the West Island.
Second: Go downtown and climb Mount Royal.
Third: Go to laser quest! It's on St.Catherine near peel. Who doesn't like a fun game of laser tag?
Fourth: Get some beaver tails in the old port. The best desert-food in town.
Fifth: Go to a bar for drunken karaoke. Clyde's in Beaconsfield on Wednesday, McKibbons downtown on thursday are the ones I know. Or you could go to vocalz any night, but vocalz is the lame karaoke bar.
Hope that helps, have fun in Montreal.

Living In Denmark sucks, because I desperately want the Scrubs dvd, but you can't buy it here. So I have to order it through amazon, and my mom doesn't dig that. At least not right now - I have no money and she wont loan me some. Thank god for season 4 on tv. I'm going to London this summer though, so I'll most likely buy it there - if it's possible.

There is SO much to do in Montreal. I live there for school and its never boring.
Go to St. Laurent Street and check out the clubs/bars... Crescent street is like our bourbon street, but really over rated...Just for Laughs is there in July.. and once it warms up there is a street festival almost every day. Also check out Hour Magazine for concerts etc... Best movie theater in montreal is the Cinema Du Parc (www.cinemaduparc.ca). Also people in Montreal are cool, they generally wont bother famous people because they dont care.
Good music venues... Metropolis, Le Tulip, Cabaret du Plateau, Cabaret Music Hall.
some good bars; Brewtopia (they make their own beer, strawberry flavored etc...) Le Swimming, the Jupiter Room and Bar Le Beafteque which might be the best dive bar around.
also you should just ask some of the people on your crew who are from Montreal.
btw, my friend Josh met you while he was walking his dog.
we are unemployed film/tv production students....Please give us jobs on your movie!

C) I love you and think you should get a myspace account.

Try the Montreal Formula 1 Race. It's a great race, I bet you could probably get some Paddock passes, even this short notice. It is definitely more of a social event than a sports event if you're in the Paddock, which is a very exclusive area.

Hey Zach:
This is my first post on this blog...
I really have to say: The work you did in GARDEN STATE was exemplary. You have great comedic abilities, which you put to great use in SCRUBS, but I was amazed to see you turn in a truly affecting dramatic performance while directing at the same time. I'm so damn impressed.
So, since you're bored, I have an idea: read a script! I've optioned the film rights to an amazing play by an award-winning playwright.
The play is a wonderful “two-hander” that tells the story of two people at the beginning of a relationship: A self-deprecating, soon-to-be successful actor in Chicago, and the young and less experienced actress/dancer he has made pregnant.
The intimate story follows the near-destitute dancer as she finds the courage to decide what should be done with her unplanned child and the rest of her life, and the actor’s sudden rise to success amidst the pressure of an impending fatherhood. And all the while, they fall more in love. The play is warm and funny and ultimately tragic, but with a sense of hope and continuance. I strongly believe that it will translate into a beautiful and moving film.
I am seeking funds for this project right now, but attaining your involvement would be extraordinary and a huge boost in my efforts. If you'd like to know more about this script, please drop me a line at my email address. I am a professional actor in L.A. with other producing credits to my name, and as where I know this is not the traditional method of reaching talent, it may be my best bet. Thank you Zach. Cheers!

Why ZB, why? Staring at a blank wall would be better than watching that drivel! As someone else mentioned, you should have been watching House. One of the best shows around. Hugh Laurie is a GOD.
/rant
Anywho,
As a half-Canadian, I'm sorry to say I've never been to Montreal. But if you ever find yourself in Calgary, Windsor, or Vancouver, I can hook you up Baby!
I was talking to Keane in the rain after their Seattle show on the ninth and I happened to bring you up. They love the fact that you like them and mentioned them in the blog. So yay for mutual love.
Oh, and Cirque is fathoms more enjoyable than Enya (shudder). For shame, I say, for shame.
But the season one DVDs are simply grand, so I forgive you.
Go get yourself a cafe au lait. You deserve it.
Au revoir and Soupy Twist!

*Waves* It's Sara again.
Failed to mention something...
I was more than happy to vote for you and Nat, I'm quite sure you'll win.
But when it comes to choosing between you and Freddie Highmore for breakthrough performance, I had to go with youth before beauty.
I mean, have you seen that final scene in Finding Neverland? The kid is a genius, you must admit.
He deserves his props, my man.

I don't know how you can be bored in Montreal theres plenty to do . This I find is the best site to find stuff to do , I use it almost everytime I head to Montreal , http://www.madeinmtl.com/ , it also helps that its really well desined and looks beautiful.
Also pick up a copy of the mirror theres a listing of things to do in the city in it .
I like the loft its a fun place to go.
Anyways hope you start to have a bit more fun in Montreal. Have a great night day whatever it is where you are.

I watched Rob and Amber Get Married too, while recording Law and Order. My Tuesdays suck without Scrubs anyways so I have to find something to watch. I did catch the Contender so I could see people beat the crap out of each other to balance out all the Mark Burnett induced love.
The dream sounds like something you should pitch to the networks - I'm willing to bet if you said it was a reality tv show type thing, they'd buy it (with the horse being real just to add the Springer aspect to it).
Good luck finding something to do. I would recommend not pulling a Conan :)

Hey Zach
You rock my socks. Sounds like thing are going boringly along in Canadia (call it that, it's fun).
i went on a school trip for the past month to Czech Republic, Poland, and Germany and I got back last night, and i am suffering from Jetlag. How do you do it? You are always traveling, i dont think i could ever be famous!
It was weird on sunday I was in Berlin and I was in the Jewish Museum and who do i see? Natalie Portman. It was crazy. I did not expect that to happen.
I just stood there in awe at her beauty...and she walked out. hehe. i didnt say anything. I would never, because i know i would be annoyed if some stranger came up to me while i was in a Jewish museum. hehe. All i know is that some of my friends went and took pictures with her, which she wasnt too happy about...and I think she has every right to be unhappy. hehe.
yeah...tagents..got to love them...it's like oxygen!
So i am back in California now with the smog and my eyes are burning! and my sinuses are going coo-coo.
I am bored...very bored...i am tired, but not enough to go to sleep. I did get some awesome pictures though. If you havent been over to Poland, and CO. you should...it's quite lovely. And wow do I love Berlin!
Well, i should go...i think i will be the responsible college student and write my papers now instead of waiting to do it last minute.
Oh yes...my school trip was the Holocaust Tour...visited 12 concentration/labor/death camps, and the Ghettos, and memorial sites...if you ever have a chance to do that...do it...it will change your life for the better.
Goodentag

If you're really bored you could always waste some time rating people on hotornot.com...... Lame but a serious time waster.
I have to admit that, even though i'm an Australian who doesn't even watch MTV, i voted. Ummm confession however that i voted for the notebook for best kiss. It was just way to romantic, and if i was going to vote for a kiss from GS it would have been the last one, not the rain one.......

There is nothing worse than being bored. I know I work 9-5 Mon-Fri and I'm bored for most of it. Who knew you can actually run out of things to look up on the net. May I suggest you look up 1980's arcade games on the net they entertain for hours. I it almost becomes a nessecity, that you play for at least 8 hours of the day. I lost 2 weeks of my life to Pac Man and Frogger. Anyways hope you find something to enterain yourself. If all else fails and nobody comes up with any good suggestion for Montreal I say fly some mates down, go out get drunk and pretend your at home. Alcohol the solution to all lives problems :)

Who are Rob and Amber? (I live in England so don't start tutting at my acute lack of American / Canadian TV knowledge).
Ummm...that's all really.
Love you tons cos you're cute and sweet.

Just thought - if you want something to while away some time go on
It's a stock market website where you trade in celebrities and try to make a million pounds, then you have to start again. The more coverage the celebrity gets then the more their shares are worth. It won't kill 8 hours at a time but it will give you something to do for a little while each day.
Or go to:
and click on games. There is a huge list of games which will while away many an hour.

HAHAHAHAHA get off the drugs! (No, I'm kidding, just...that dream is really cracked-out.)
I don't live there, so I can't really tell you what to do, but...I love it there! Maybe because I only go for a day at a time. :/
I just can't imagine putting your wedding on TV. Seriously, what the shit? I'm an attention whore and even *I* wouldn't do that.
It's time for school now so I'll have to end this here...oh, I thought of what you can do! Come visit Ottawa! No, seriously, it's not that far, and there are, um...the Parliament buildings? Err...dowtown here is pretty fun (for, like, an hour...but STILL!)

Hey Zach,
I know the feeling of being bored out of your mind in a different city.
Heard you were cast for "Fast Track" with Amanda Peet. That is awesome, you should have a fun time filming with her.

Dude, I live in Ontario and I'll be the first to tell you this is one damn boring country. There are lovely places but they are hidden from tourists. I just ask that you don't judge your perception of Canadians on Montrealians, especially their driving. The rest of us are wonderful people I swear it.
Posted by: Laura | May 25, 2005 5:05:49 AM
I don't know if there's any point posting this far down. But for good eats in Montreal you MUST go to Decarie Hotdog on Decarie Street. Eat it all dressed, and eat plenty. Sooo good. Also, don't forget the ever popular drive up Mount Royal to the scenic lookout. Or you could spend hours in the big graveyard looking for that stone that says F-You (the pic widely circulated the net). Good luck. If you're still bored next weekend, let me know and I'll take you out for some fun!:)

argh, had an English literature exam today at it is extremely hot here, going insane with boredom, though bought a new skirt
Love Meg xxx

Hey Zach!
well, I guess the upside of being bored is that you're posting more often these days, right? You're right, Tuesday nights are'nt that exciting here, especially with that sucky weather. But if we can ever get a glimpse of sunshine, try hitting the "terrasses" (patios) outside to grab a frosty one. The most popular are the "St-Sulpice" where everybody goes in the evening, and the Saint-Elizabeth, which is'nt far. The Jello-Bar is also a good bet. Also, go to some micro-breweries and taste the local beers. Very tasty!
In 10 days, try to hit the Formula One Grand Prix. I'm sure you could manage to get some tickets.
I'd tell you to hit Crescent Street, which is where most of the Anglos and tourists visit. Try the Newtown, and if you're in the mood for 80's music, the Electric Avenue, across the street.
But since you're here for 3 months, my advice is to be patient...July and August are crazy here. Try to hit the Jazz Fest and see all the free shows in the street, the Just For Laughs festival early July. I'm kind of insulted that you feel bored in that great city, but hey, I got to watch the Scrubs DVD on Tuesday night, which is much better than that wedding you watched! =)
Be patient, Zach...sunshine and good times are coming!

Hi,
As a '' Montrealer '', I can propose you a lot of nice things to do around the city. I don't know what is your knowledge of french language, but on this wednesday night there a show call '' Les Moquettes Coquettes '' at the Cabaret that is pretty funny. Also, if you like independant movies, there is the Excentris cinema on St-Laurent that present a lot of interesting stuff. Finaly, if you feel like enjoying the fresh air, take a walk on the Mount Royal. The vew is amazing, especially at night... But I have to admit Tuesday night can be pretty boring, and watching Rob and Amber get married (yes I did)made me feel lonely and stupid...

It's nice to hear that semi-famous people with unlimited funds get bored too. At least you have time to read all of these comments. You can always email me with another crazy dream and I will do my best to interpret them for you. I think your crazy horse dream was a sign that it's about time that you throw a saddle on the love of your life before he/she throws one on you! I kept having the same dream over and over that my teeth were falling out. I'd bite down and they'd crumble and usually it was somewhere where there was no proper dental care - like England - and I'd be saving all the pieces, hoping they could be put back together. Then I saw an episode of The Sopranos (my favorite reality show) and Tony had the same dream. I looked it up on the internet and found out it symbolized a loss of power. Sooo, I checked out of the mental institution, quit my teaching job, divorced my husband, and I've never been happier. If you are really bored and have a few days off, check into a mental institution...you laugh, have the time of your life and have all sorts of new writing material.
Anyway, I travel for my job, and I know how you feel. There are only so many lunches, dinners, and cocktail hours, and superficial people to kiss your butt before you are seriously homesick for a true friend.
Hang in there!
Penny

Silly Zach, you could have gone stir crazy while watching Law And Oder: SVU instead of Rob and Amber's marriage or whatever that show is. Law And Order is much, much better.

Zach,
Here are a couple of ideas:
*Go to a cozy jazz bar and enjoy some rhythm with a perrier (I don't know if you drink or not).
*Go to a library downtown and check out their expanse of old texts.
*See if there are guided fishing tours (if you like to fish)
*http://www.fta.qc.ca/05/en/index.html (starts today in montreal)
*go out in search of finding me the perfect tshirt that says Zach Braff bought me a tshirt in Canada. ;)
Either way, good luck and have fun!

get $2 chow mein from parfums d'asie on the corner of st laurent and des pins. it's best if you go to biftek first. alternately, check out the green room (le salon vert)5386 St Laurent. wednesday is games night and there's good music every night.

Hey, OK,
Zach Braff Bored. No Way!
In the vein of sharing weird dreams. I once had a really high fever when I was a kid, and dreamed that Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum (from Alice in Wonderland)came to kidnap me. Anyhoo.
For things to do at night in Montreal, I'm at a loss. Maybe you could take some time to write another brilliant screenplay? Maybe you could take a dance class, or French class?
Peace, JADS

Things were quiet on Tuesday as it was a holiday weekend, and everyone was partied out.
Things to do in Montreal:
Climb the mountain and look at the spectacular view (granted its raining all too much but on a nice day...)
Go to Schwartz's Smoked Meat on St.Laurent...its amazing and you'll never have tried anything like it. Afterwards can go for a drink at GoGo (cocktails) or Resevoir (for beer & chill music).
The old port is fantistic, and can get the ferry over to St.Helen Island. Nice get away from it place in the city (although in 3 weeks will have lots of formula 1 cars zooming around). Also has a Casino, and La Ronde Ammusement Park.
Cafe Campus & La Tulip - lots of small bands, plus bands from the UK (Snow Patrol and Athlete played there last week).
The Just for Laughs Museum: corner of St.Laurent & Sherbrooke. This museum, an offshoot of the popular Festival of Laughter, is dedicated to the different genres of humor and comedy. Learn more about the quirky canadian humor.
Mount Royal & St.Denis : worth wondering around to soak up the ambiance of french montreal.
Hope that gives a few ideas.

If you have access to a car you can take a drive down, Lake Shore in the West Island it's a really pretty street, and can probably eat up a couple hours of your time. Walking on the Mountain is also fun. If you get a day off you can go check out Ottawa it is only 2 hours away, then have lots of good Museums if you want to do the tourist thing.
I can't say I'm ever bored in Montreal, just go see a movie, no ?
Posted by: BrianK | May 25, 2005 6:40:54 AM
Hey Zach,
I hear theres a great Jazz scene in Montreal. I was supposed to go two years ago and check it out, but I had a death in the circle of friends that prohibited me from going. If you're going to be there much longer, I believe that there is a huge Jazz festival somewhere in June or July (I can't remember). Other than that I have no suggestions for you. Club it up or something. There's bound to be some cool bars there. Learn French? lol. I don't know.
Anyway, if there's nothing cool to do, just like read or something--get tan? talk to strangers on the internet pretending you're ashleieieieie simpson? Enjoy your time there, I hear it's beautiful.
Best,
Angela

Zach Braff! Go crazy in Canada! Write your memoirs! Speak french! Have Canadian wine! Enjoy the life that you have created for yourself, the success you have enjoyed, and all will be right with the world.

Hi Zach, I voted for you and Natalie of course, but I had to go back and vote for the Notebook too. You've got to admit it was a good movie. What do you think of Natalie shaving off her hair? She looks like a better version of GI Jane to me. By the way, are you a practicing Jew?

Things for Zach to do that he hasn't thought of-
1)http://www.spanishportuguese-mtl.org/
it's one of the oldest shuls in Canada...plus it's a Spanish Portuguese Temple with services in French and Hebrew THAT'S GOTTA BE A HOOT!
2) Roller Skating....if you are jonesin some exercise and don't want people directly in yo' face...Tuesday and Thursday eves. a nerdy bunch of in-line skate enthusiasts meet in the Old Port in front of the IMAX building (King Edward Quay)
3)try the Shrimp and Tamarind soup @ Coco Vert on Amherst Street. Assuming you dig Vietnamese which potentially you may not.
4)"House of D" @ the AMC forum 22 on Ste-Catherine Quest.
Not just because Duchovny is a talented director and Robin Williams is brilliant but because you are a film enthusiast (to put it mildly) and I bet you haven't seen anything good lately....except maybe a hot shower!
5)Granby Zoo
A baby Baringo Giraffe was born there in October and, after dealing with all those HOLLYWOOD animals...I would wager high stakes you'd prefer real animals...(they have better table manners)
6) Einstein show @ the Planetarium on St-Jaques St.
I know.....planetariums bring back that grade-school field trip vibe..BUT, I hear this show is excellent and in a dark planetarium....if you dress like a shlub....no one will spot you and harrass you.
That's all I recommend at this point. At least you will take a break from that cyber-crack/1st person shooter HALO nonsense.
Still in love with yer' tush!
Debra
PS- got my SCRUBS 1st season DVD and it surpasses my expectations!!

Hi - first of all, the winter Carnival festival to which someone referred takes place in Quebec City, which is about two and a half hours from here (Montreal).
There are tons of festivals around the corner - the Fringe Fest starts in June, and then there's Just For Laughs, the Jazz Fest, two or three film fests... I agree with one of the other Montreal commenters re the weather. On behalf of the city, we're sorry!
Hit the Main, my man - that's St-Laurent Street to the tourists. There's food and drink and vintage clothing stores and colourful locals and so on and so on.
On Sunday, the place to be (crappy weather permitting) is Mount Royal, on the Park Avenue side. Every Sunday, as soon as the snow is gone, hundreds of Montrealers converge on the mountain for the 'Tam Tams', a giant, hippy-esque jam with bongoes and dogs chasing frisbees and, um, organic produce.
Finally, if you want to hang out with other bloggers, we congregate on the first Wednesday of every month. Details at http://www.yulblog.org/.

Dearest Zach,
Thanks for amusing us to death!
It's really time to lay off the baloney tacos before you go to bed. Try the Canadian bacon on a Horton's donut instead. It's much more satisfying, and you won't get the urge to hum that damn Oscar Mayer song.
Your Canadian mission should you choose to accept it...search the IMDB for movies with Canada or Canadian in the titles and send out the RCMP to secure copies for you.
Make sure you select "Other" in your RCMP request:
http://www.rcmp.ca/contact/index_e.htm
Some of the better titles include:
Canadian Zombie
Canadian Ballet: Striptease Dancers of the North
Canadian Can Can
Canadian Idol
At the very least, you'll be missing the good ole' USA even more. We have much better titles...
American Pie
American Graphitti
American Beauty
American Pimp
The Last American Virgin
Beavis and Butt-Head Do America
Anyhoot, enjoy yourself up there! Remember, if all else fails, you are a very self-contained individual...if you know what I mean. *Wink wink*
All my love from the Garden State,

Posted by: pigri | May 25, 2005 7:07:12 AM
if i were in montreal, i'd take a quick trip down to nova scotia. i hear it's a really intresting place.
if that doesn't work, i'd just find myself a nice little pub and lay out there for the rest of my time there.. darts, pool, and dark beer never get old. unless you're a recovering alcoholic, in which case i wouldnt suggest doing that.
cheers

Since I don't live in Montreal (I'm only related to Montreal through a Montreal Canadians t-shirt), so I leave the go nuts and tell-thing to the others. I just wanted to tell you that you're great. Reruns of Scrubs every night truly makes me smile here in Sweden. And I must say, you have a exquisite taste in music. But I'm sure you're already aware of that, winning a grammy and all.
Posted by: lynn | May 25, 2005 7:11:27 AM
I too watched Rob and Amber get married... hmmm so sweet. Hey if you are in Montreal (my old hometown) you have to go eat at cafe santropol (http://www.santropol.com/interior/interior.htm), and have all of the crazy sandwiches. Then when you have nothing to post about, you can post about all of the crazy combos! Oh how I miss the french.

Bonjour Zach!
I vacationed in Montreal once and had a fantastic time- but then again, I think all I did was drink and eat. Some fantastic restaurants. One restaurant we did a 14 course meal!
We saw some great museums. Go hang out by McGill too- they'll know where the party is! And hey, if Dave Atell could party all night in Montreal, so can you :-)
And by the way, I voted on MTV for you, my first time ever and I am 31. When I was a kid my father forbid us from having cable, saying it would make us smarter. And yes, I do remember when MTV came on the air (Kids I am *that* old!)
So now I am smart but I am the queen of uncool.
Shalom and au revoir,
Wendy G.
