Tsunami Relief

Dear Friends of Garden State:

I have donated one of Natalie's main costumes from the movie along with the "Red Gas Nozzle" that my character finds in the gas tank of his car to a charity auction on ebay.  The charity benefits the victims of the Tsunami through UNICEF.  I realize the auction is a bit steep for many of you, but if you know anyone who can afford to contribute to this important cause, please let them know about it.

You can find the auction by clicking on this link HERE, or by going to ebay and entering the keywords "Tsunami Benefit Peapod".

As we say in New Jersey,  "Thank You"

xoxo

Posted by: lisa | Feb 12, 2005 9:29:42 PM

i didnt read this post before comment because, well, i was afraid of not being the first to comment. anyway, i think what you are doing for unicef is awesome.

Posted by: lisa, again | Feb 12, 2005 9:31:55 PM

That is so generous of you, Zach! Every little thing helps.

Are you doing anything to help the victims in Darfur? Just wondering.

Peace and love--

Posted by: Paige Gresty | Feb 12, 2005 9:32:37 PM

man I wish I could bid on that stuff.

Zach you rock! I turn 18 on March 2nd. You should send me a letter, or something. Like yourself. Or let me be on your show! Or just wish me a happy birthday. that would be awesome.

Posted by: Kristin | Feb 12, 2005 9:35:16 PM

That's awesome!! If I could afford it, you know I'd contribute. And I'm glad you're updating more frequently. BTW...Arrested Development is a kick butt show.

Posted by: Rosemary | Feb 12, 2005 9:35:30 PM

Hey! I've been reading this thing all along and this is my first time commenting..there actually aren't a million comments already! Zach I think you're amazing, I truely loved Garden State and I make everyone watch it when they come to my house. Scrubs is one of my favorite shows and I think you're hugely talented. I can't afford to buy that stuff but I've already donated what I can to help out, it's awesome that so many people are getting involved! Keep up the great work, the previews for Chicken Little are getting me really excited ^_^ Love you man!!!

Posted by: Jenny | Feb 12, 2005 9:35:31 PM

While I'd love to donate a thousand dollars or more to a worthy cause, I simply don't have that kind of money. However, I've been able to give what I can to Unicef. They're a great organization, not only for its relief efforts for victims of the tsunami, but also for its dedication to saving the world's children.

Posted by: Lae | Feb 12, 2005 9:36:16 PM

Zach,
Great to hear from you again and good work on your efforts to make a difference concerning the tsunami tragedy. I am very enthusiastic about all of your upcoming projects (especially Arrested Development). I will definitely check them all out. Garden State is such an awesome movie, with quite a devoted following here in Utah of all places. Good luck with your upcoming work, and look forward to hearing from yyou again soon.

holy crap im in the top 10 comments. i better hurry before more people comment.

you rock.

Zach my dear-

How amazing of you to do that! Proving once again that you are one of my favorite people ever. If I had the money, the nozzle would be mine.

I came to look at the blog tonight because I can't sleep. The day after tomorrow is the dreaded Valentine's Day. Being single (and in highschool) I can say I pretty much abhor the entire day. So much that I can't sleep. Pretty weird huh? I just thought I would tell you about it. Maybe you could share your thoughts on the day. All of my friends and my family really get into it and I have no one who feels what I do. So I hoping that on the off chance you are not fond of it either.

Look at me, spilling out my guts. I should probably try and sleep...meh.

As for songs to listen too (people leave comments all the time and I never have anything worth posting until now)
The Killers: All These Things That I've Done

Keep being your amazing self!

I think that what your doing is such an awsome gesture... Almost two months later since it happened and I hope that no one has forgot about the continuing efforts to help out. I loved GS and the soundtrack has opened my eyes to new music. I was wondering what else you have been listening to...

Posted by: Ashley | Feb 12, 2005 9:41:07 PM

that is such a brilliant idea! you know, there are so many times when i sit back and look at what we've done to our world and how we treat each other so unequally, with fighting and violence and hatred and it makes me sad for a minute as i consider the thought that we're ruining this beautiful gift we've been given, and then disaster strikes and rather then falling even deeper, i see people pulling together once again. it's really amazing to witness two supposed enemies banding together to aid another. it's as though we've been given an instinct to help our fellow man in need, regardless of our angers. thank you for being part of this saving mission for the tsunami victims. hopefully it will make others realize the importance of unity and sacrifice.

Posted by: morgan | Feb 12, 2005 9:41:58 PM

What a brilliant idea. Thanks for contributing to such a great cause. If I had the money, I'd bid. Maybe I will just to rack up the price.
Also, I must add a huge thank you for staying so true to us fans. This blog really makes such a difference. Oh, and that CALL-TURK phone number? Genius! That's such a cool way to encorporate the fans. "Scrubs" is everything I enjoy in a 30-minute show and congrats on snagging such an awesome and, I'm sure, rewarding job. You look like you're having a blast. I wish you all the very best and keep up the outstanding work. And as lisa said before me, "thanks for reading my comment."

Posted by: Claire | Feb 12, 2005 9:42:22 PM

Wow, That's a really awsome thing you are doing Zach. I know you'll make a good amount to donate. Mad props to ya!

Posted by: Marisa B. | Feb 12, 2005 9:43:51 PM

I'm the current high bidder for the gas pump!!!! YEAH!!!! Hope to get it!
Lots of love everyone,
Sandra

Posted by: Sandra | Feb 12, 2005 9:45:46 PM

i just wanted to add, after rereading my post, that i'm not saying that we are supposed enemies of the tsunami victims, but other countries over there that were at war with each other have banded together to help out. just wanted to clear that up.

Posted by: morgan | Feb 12, 2005 9:46:54 PM

Hey Zach-that's awesome! Know what else is awesome? Your movie, Garden State ;). I know you hear it all the time, but you really do rock...I think itz kewl that you like black and white photography. Peace out yo ;)

It's awesome that you get to help like the victims with an auction. I hope that it will raise a lot of money for a great cause.

I've said it so many times in other posts, but i love you. Thanks for your movie, it's helped me through many tough times, including the loss of a friend and a tranistion into my future.

Remember to breathe sometime within all of your work!

Thank YOU. If I wasn't broke, I'd be all over that gas pump and costume.

Posted by: kelsie | Feb 12, 2005 9:52:55 PM

That's very nice of you. We gave the Red Cross some money (not Natalie-Portman's-costume-amount-of-money) but money none-the-less

Looking forward to seeing you on Arrested Developement and Scrubs

Posted by: Caitlin | Feb 12, 2005 9:54:37 PM

Wow, I love seeing people, especially celebrities, contribute to the Tsumani relief. You're among one of my many favorite people who've contributed, along with Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. There are times when I was I could do more to help out, I really do. :[

I love how the gas nozzle is just ...laying there in the picture. I think that's really amusing how it's such a random picture of a gas nozzle. Woo, I'm easily amused.

Anyway, rock on, my man. It's a very good thing what you're doing.

Peace, love and pancakes!

Posted by: Jen | Feb 12, 2005 9:55:10 PM

Oh Zach, you're the absolute best! I wish I had the money to bid or knew someone that did.

Posted by: Kas | Feb 12, 2005 9:55:16 PM

That's a great way to contribute. :)

I bet your wallpaper covered shirt would of been a hot commodity too.

Hope you have a great week!

Posted by: Kristen | Feb 12, 2005 9:55:46 PM

If I wasn't on an extreme budget I would definitely be bidding on those. But at the moment, money is not in high supply.

Scrubs last weeek was spectacular. i can't wait for the 1st season DVD to come out.

Posted by: Heather | Feb 12, 2005 9:55:54 PM

I also wish i had the money for it. I'll spread this to a couple of places though. Pretty much all my extra spending money has gone to the red cross lately too. I just can't believe it. hundreds of thousands of people. I wish i could do more.

Posted by: kristin detroit | Feb 12, 2005 9:56:30 PM

Awesome... I wish I could bid on one of them, but I'm too poor. I will tell all my friends about this though and hopefully one of them can bid. They're all big fans of Garden State.

Also, I think Garden State was the best movie of 2004 and you are awesome in Scrubs. It's actually the only TV show I actively watch.

Posted by: Jonathan Patt | Feb 12, 2005 9:57:21 PM

Hey Zach
I'm watching Jason Bateman on SNL right now, and, just a random thought, but have they ever asked you to host? You've got raw talent when it comes to both physical and intellectual comedy. Okay, I'm going to bed now.

Posted by: Kristin | Feb 12, 2005 9:57:34 PM

Can't wait for the DVDs! Is there any news on when your episode of Arrested Development will air?

Posted by: Amy | Feb 12, 2005 9:57:46 PM

I just realized that my first post was in the top 20 and my 2nd one will be in the top 30 so I wanted to say a little more...... YAY to me! I'm going to go to the highest bid I can on the gas pump because it holds a special place in my heart. Back in my younger days ( I had my licence for two days ) I once drove off with the gas pump in my car and even though I didn't rip it out, I scratched the hell out of my car. When I saw that in the movie, it made me laugh..... Maybe the person who pays more money for it will give it to me...lol....
Lots of love everyone,
Sandra

Posted by: Sandra | Feb 12, 2005 9:57:52 PM

hey man, what you are doing is great. just to add to that, anyone who wants to donate for helping those people out, you can always use sites like amazon.com to send donations, or through unicef's own web site.

Posted by: taylan pince | Feb 12, 2005 9:58:11 PM

I wish I could bid on that stuff Zach. That's cool of you. Congrats on the Grammy nomination. You know you're gonna win. Now you'll have a gold (sson to be platinum) record and a Grammy too! I love your work.

Rock your socks off.

Class act, Mr. Braff. If I had an extra thousand dollars, you'd be sure I'd place a bid.

Actually bought Garden State today, which has brought me to the site. I never 'surf the web', but I am amazed that you have the time to keep up with such a site. Wanted you to know that the story was captivating. I forgot I was watching a movie. Samford Meisner would have been proud. Truthful. Every moment was complete and full of behavior. Hats off to your hard work, Garden State is beautiful!

Posted by: Rachel Lynette | Feb 12, 2005 10:13:38 PM

Hey Zach, I just wanted to say that I, along with an innumerable amount of other people, LOVE Garden State, and you, and of course Scrubs, and we applaud you for every piece of work you've done. And you really know that it's payed off because today my friend who knows how much of a GS fanatic I am, handed me a cardboard cupholder with a GS add on it. Good job buddy, you've earned it! Love Claire

Posted by: Claire | Feb 12, 2005 10:16:50 PM

Hi! I am from Singapore which is one of the few regions in Southeast Asia untouched by the tsunami. It is painful remembering just how lucky we are. I am so glad that you are doing something in your own way to help. Thank you.

P.S. Garden State was not released here, but I managed to see it when a friend bought the DVD for me when she was in the US. And I'm glad she did! :)

P.P.S. Please listen to the song Homesick, by Kings of Convenience, because it echoed your movie, for me.

Posted by: Ning | Feb 12, 2005 10:17:12 PM

ZB,

Just hit the big 2-8 this week...it's been a great birthday week...I'm hoping it doesn't all go too fast from here cause I'm having too much fun. Decided to treat myself to TiVo so I can season pass Scrubs instead of trying to make it home by 9 to watch or remembering to tape it before I leave for work in the a.m.).

Glad you're still blogging with your busy schedule. Can't wait to see you on Arrested Development--hope you get lots of screen time w/ Jason Bateman (so glad he didn't mock you after stealing your Globe!).

So what are your top Oscar picks for this year? Trying to win the pool...any insider advice you can give?

Peace, love and hugs,
rebecca :)

Posted by: rebecca | Feb 12, 2005 10:17:17 PM

OMG! i can't believe i'm in the top 50. *sarcastic*

sure, i love scrubs and garden state, but i think the most impact you've had on my life is your musical tastes. thanks for constantly throwing out new groups for me to listen to. the shins are officially my favorite band.

much love,

Posted by: kingwong | Feb 12, 2005 10:18:21 PM

I would love the gas nozzle.

be well, ZB... <333

Posted by: Kimie | Feb 12, 2005 10:18:41 PM

Well Zach, I'd love to bid/buy one or both of those things, but unfortunatly, cardiac care technicians don't get paid really high. However, that's not me trying to give an excuse. That's really nice that you're donating a few props from your movie. Really sad when people spend more on an inaguration ceremony rather than aid in a relief fund.

Posted by: Ryan | Feb 12, 2005 10:19:11 PM

I am big fan of Scrubs, and like many that was the impetus for my interest in Garden State. My friends just gave me the dvd for my 30th bday a couple of weeks ago. (You weren't lying when you said it goes fast after 28.)

A couple of questions/notes:
Do your friends flip you crap for all the fan love you get?

I heard you say in an interview that you visited Natalie at Harvard and while there partied as much as you can at Harvard. (An obviously sarcastic comment.) As an alumni myself, I can tell you there are good times to be had if you are with the right group. I promise you that.

From the stories and opinions you share with your fans you seem like a good guy. That is refreshing.

I look forward to each Tuesday night, and of course keeping up with your blog.

Posted by: Mel | Feb 12, 2005 10:23:38 PM

Zach,

So great that you're doing this. And if I was anywhere near as rich as I wish I would, I would snatch up both items in a second! Alas, I am but a poor girl.

I'm sure you'll raise a ton of money tho - so well done.

Posted by: Rebecca Parker | Feb 12, 2005 10:25:44 PM

That's awesome. If I had unlimited sources of income, I would most definitly buy the gas nozzle.

Posted by: Arielle | Feb 12, 2005 10:26:11 PM

Oh man, I would LOVE that gas pump. It would go with the bathroom stall lock and hubcap I have in my room (because, you know, it's a random object that one does not generally keep in one's room).

Also: I think this is really great of you. :)

Now I have to go to sleep so that I don't fall asleep while skiing tomorrow and hit a tree and die tragically before I've had a chance to see all of Futurama.

Posted by: Glop | Feb 12, 2005 10:32:58 PM

That's so really classy of you, dude. Couldn't be prouder to be a ZB fan than I am at this moment. :)

Are you going to be at the Grammy's tomorrow for the soundtrack? Love it!

Posted by: mel | Feb 12, 2005 10:37:49 PM

that's awesome that your doing that. i wish i can donate a costume from the show i'm in but i don't think they would let me. i do however donate 2 dollars everyday at starbucks before i go to work....YES!

Posted by: nesa | Feb 12, 2005 10:38:43 PM

Wow Zach, that's a really awesome thing to do. You have no idea how much that means to me, because I have relatives in India and Sri Lanka and there are still many who we haven't heard from. Thank you for doing this. Just, thank you.

Posted by: Sapna | Feb 12, 2005 10:40:22 PM

It's true. I'm from New Jersey and I know for a fact that we do say "Thank you" here.

But, that's an awesome thing you're doing, Zach. I'm glad you're using your "power" for good.

Posted by: Luke | Feb 12, 2005 10:40:28 PM

Zach, I am astounded with who you are and what you're doing.

Congratulations on your success, knowing that simply donating a few props and costumes you will make a huge help must be so fullfilling.

You are amazing (and not in the OMG UR SO HOT!$&*() way.. well.. you are.. but.. meh). :) Thank you.

Posted by: Nikki | Feb 12, 2005 10:41:46 PM

Well hm, yes I changed my comment name. I tried to convince my friend my lastname was Filmmaker.

He didn't believe me.

Anyways, I dunno, I usuallly buy things I want to use. I...can't [well can] wear Sam's outfit, and...the gas pumper is...de-pumped.

But it's a great idea, and I know it should sell good. My step-dad's in Thailand now at morgues and what not, so he'll work in my name. You work in your name.

I think your new name should be Zach ...Big Heart.

Posted by: Filming Matty | Feb 12, 2005 10:43:41 PM

Hey Zach,

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways...

This is just amazing of you. I am actually originally from Sri Lanka and have tons of relatives over there. Many of them were affected by the tsunami, and a few have gone missing. It really helps lift my spirits to see good people like you trying to help. I've already donated pretty much my entire savings for university so I doubt I'll be winning the auction, but I just wanted to thank you. Just when I thought you, in my eyes, couldn't get any better, you go ahead and prove me wrong. Take care :)

*Sandi

Posted by: Sandi | Feb 12, 2005 10:46:46 PM

Zach, awesome job man. I'm sure the hundreds of thousands of nameless people over there appreaciate your / everyones effort. I would bid on the gas pump, seeing as how i'm a bit of a car enthusiast, garden state fan, and south jersey born and raised, but 300 is a little out of my price range right now. sorry.

in unrelated news : band of pure amazingness :

The Decemberists

buy / download / lie / cheat / steal to get this music.

Posted by: Adam Heller | Feb 12, 2005 10:48:39 PM

zach, you just keep getting better...

...if only i had the money. it would be a hard choice: a gas pump or clothes that my inspiration, natalie portman, has actually worn. hmmmm. :)

btw, thanks for being you.

Posted by: tracy | Feb 12, 2005 10:49:44 PM

ZACH please host SNL

i would honestly give anything to watch you host SNL with the Shins or Cary or Gavin as the musical act

im sure you know people and have a lot of connections (collin farrel?)

come on it would be so fun... make it happen!

Like my new DJ alias? I'm kidding. I'm not even a real dj and I don't even know how to dj, but it's cool anyhow. If I had the moola to spare or the credit card to spare moola with, I'd bid on the auction, but alas, no.

Posted by: DJ Jumbalaya | Feb 12, 2005 10:54:49 PM

Hey zach, just wanted to let you know that i look up to you big time. I am in a film program at a community college right now, but i am zooming through it. This is my second semester and i am already in all of the final classes, they just keep skipping me ahead. Anyway, i am working on all of my stuff, hoping to get a break in the business, and i really look forward to possibly working with you one day. It would be a dream come true. Well i'll leave you with thanks for all the great work and keep it up.

Posted by: Ben | Feb 12, 2005 10:54:55 PM

Well this is highly cool of you. Not that you weren't highly cool already, but you know, this ups you on the meter. There's no such thing as being too high on the meter.

Since you so liberally share your blog with your adoring public, I added mine in the little URL box. Should you find the overwhelming urge to read about my life, go ahead. Although, after this wordy post, I could see where you might hesitate. But its too late, and I'm too worn out to be brilliant.

Here's one thing that I think actually is relevant: It would be encouraging if it were possible for us to search the comments posted to your entries. I don't know if this has been suggested before or not, but if not, then scratch that "I'm not brilliant" thing. Because this is a good idea. As a loyal reader here, I not only enjoy your posts, but I enjoy the posts of others as well. I'm slutty like that.

But yeah, searching by name or email address or overused verbs would be preferable to scrolling through the mass of responses to find the ones you'd like to quote to yourself in your mind for the days to come.

So think about it. Think about how great it might be, and how many people could be happy as a result. Do you really want to be responsible for withholding happiness from people?

Well, I'm spent. What does that mean anyway? "I'm spent". The image of people who have a bounty on their heads just popped into my mind, when they are unfortunately killed, thats truly what it means to be spent. I'll just get more literal here so that I actually quit typing: I'm very drowsy. Its time to cuddly with my puppy and get some sleep. You have an enriching day.

Hey. Thanks for donating those items. I think we all need to do what we can. It's tough being so far away from it all and not letting it slip our minds. 9-11 was on my mind daily for almost a year (still a short time), but even now I find myself forgetting about that corner of the world and the trauma they're still in. Tonight I bought a blue help-tsunami-victims bracelet at 7 Eleven to help me remember the victims and keep them in prayer (and to donate my $2.99). And I think I've decided a chunk of my next paycheck will go to the effort. I think we all need to suck it up and look over the (many) organizations and find to whom we'd want to give, and just do it. We have so many resources here it's a shame we don't share a bit more with our world. So, all this to say... Rock on, Zach, for setting an example and to challenge us all (including me) to care a bit more.

Damn good idea Zach.
I wasn't surprised to see Natalie's costume with the highest bid! (Afterall, she's a deadset spunk). I mean if I had a stash of cash I soooo would be the highest bidder!
All the best with the auctions!

if only i had the money you could have it...

I don't know if you have dillons where you live, but I live in Kansas, and we have Dillons, and at Dillons you can have your grocery bill rounded up to the next dollar and that extra change is donated. it's a cheap way to make a difference...

you'd be suprised as to how far a gas pump can go when it comes to helping the residents of an island that moved 100ft.

Sweet, I am in the double digits as far as comments go!

Zach, I was so excited to find out

that you were going to be on

Arrested Development. Scrubs and

AD are my two favorite shows on TV

right now and they're definitely

the smartest, chic-est (is that a

word), and quickest paced

single-camera comedies on TV! You

should really pitch doing a

CROSSOVER between the two shows!

You would really be helping out AD

ratings with your starpower! You

are uber talented and please keep

producing great work and stay

busy... I don't mind infrequent

posts at all as long as that means

you are busy making great things.

:) You make me happy. -Vanessa

questions).

Hey, thats such an awesome thing you're doing. Sadly, I don't have NEARLY enough money for that outfit (especially since I got fired from Best Buy... boo them, and have to pay for college). I have a special person in my life that would LOVE that sweater jacket (or at least one similar). Is that a designer outfit or did Michael Wilkinson make it himself? If I got her a similar jacket it would make her year (best birthday gift EVER)!

Garden State earns my award for best movie of the year. My award is only second to the Oscars, and is made of paper.... construction paper.

Just wanted to say that I loved the movie. Unfortunately, Zach, you took away my dreams and hopes. See, in my own little world, I'm building future life with Natalie. And now you go and make her character one of the most likable ones in movie history. So at this point every guy out there is in love with her... Can you imagine the competition I have to face? I guess I have to win that auction for Natalie's dress. That will impress her, right? All I have to do is beg my mom for money now. Hope she appreciates that I'm doing it for her and her future grandkids. But seriously though, I think you're doing the right thing trying to get people involved in helping out tsunami victims. Very impressive that you didn't just put the story to the backpages for yourself by now. Good luck.
Once again, great job with the movie. Hope to see more from you soon.

I am lucky enough to work for a corporation that matched our donations through Red Cross for the Tsunami Relief.
It is great that you are doing your part to help out. As time passes, people seem to forget about the tragedies of the world still exist.

Question: Where the hell is Scrubs on DVD...when will it ever come out? Everything under the fucking sun is now on DVD but Scrubs...where is it???

You're a cool guy, Mister Braff.

If I wasn't a poor student with barely enough monies in my pocket to buy booze and instant cake mix (Betty Crocker and Me, YES! :D ), i'd so be bidding right about now. I'll pimp the auction to affluent friends and relatives, though.

On a sort of unrelated note, I wanted to say 'thank you' (yeah, we say it here in Perth too. It's a small world, innit?) for Garden State again. Without GS, I should never have found The Shins, and therefore would never have gone to their concert last night and would never have been chatted up by that drunken hobo...

Okay so in other words it was -all- good, up until the drunken hobo.

So yeah, thanks :) Sitting here in my Shins Tshirt, in a tiny little cess pool in Western Australia, I am extremely grateful that you made the movie. Obviously, i'm also thinking how cool you are for doing this whole Tsunami Relief thing.

Okee dokee, long boring rant is over - I shall now return to my cake mix. Have a good one (weird expression. a good WHAT, i've always wondered? Oh well, whatever it is...uh..have one!)

My Garden State Experience... by Kathryn

It was my 23rd birthday and I was miserable. For no reason in particular, maybe just the fact that I was turning 23(my friends and I always thought we'd have a husband and 5 babies by that age - we went to a school in the boonies and there wasn't much to talk about :) So I rented this movie that I had heard so much about...
I cried and laughed a little, but mostly cried and cried. It was beautiful...the emotion...the story...the reality. It was incredible....
I really don't know how else to explain it other than it is one of those movies that sticks with you...It has been 3 weeks since I first watched it (I watched it 8 times in a row) and I don't think a day has gone by that I haven't thought of it....So for that, all I can say is thank you Zack. Thanks-
Kathryn

Zach-

All my life I’ve wanted to be a writer and along the way have always fantasized about meeting some of my celebrity idols who inspire me. I’ve been thinking a lot about why this is lately and what it would be like to actually meet someone like, say, you or Owen Wilson, or Nick Hornby. What would we talk about, and why would it be so fantastic? Most importantly, why would someone like you want to take the time to talk to someone like me, when there are literally thousands of people who could probably hold the same conversation as far as you are concerned. They’re called fans.

I think what it comes down to is that I (we) enjoy finding like-minded people to talk to, and when a celebrity is a like-minded person, and their work is praised and available for all to see, they become an even more desirable person to talk to and identify with. I think Garden State is absolutely brilliant, for many complicated reasons, but also for one very simple reason: you get it. And because you get it, and because you are part of my generation (I’m 22, you’re almost 30...which I think makes us the same generation...unless people are having babies when they’re 8 which I don’t think is true, but then again, I was never very good with the ladies.), I respect your opinion and would love to be able to get your opinion on some of my work as a writer.

So here’s the unreasonable, out-of-my-mind-never-gonna-happen pitch, and then I’ll take it a step back:
My friend and I have co-written three one-act plays. Two in high school and one last year here in college. They have all been somewhat outrageous character driven comedies which have all been received with tons of laughter and praise (I’m usually modest, but this is a freakin’ pitch right?) Now, as seniors, we have written our fourth which will be performed the last weekend in March and April 7-9 at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. It would be our honor if you could somehow find the time and that “let’s do something completely insane” attitude and attend one performance. Having said that, and assuming the obvious “I think you’ve adopted that completely insane attitude a little too often” response, here’s a more down to earth request:

It would be incredible, helpful, and inspiring if we could send you a tape of the show and a copy of the script simply to read over and react to. I’m not asking for you to do anything other than read it and let us know what you think as a person who enjoys comedy, and as a writer like us. In other words, I’m not sliding this script underneath your bathroom stall. I’m just asking for an honest opinion, some writerly criticism, and possibly some advice. I know you’re busy, but in four months, I will finally be free of school, and any criticism, advice, or laughter from you would make that first step into the real world a lot less frightening. Thanks for even reading this.

From the LA of the Northeast (the City of Lewiston/Auburn),
Jon

but i figured that since i am actually (for once) in the top 100, or close to it, i might as well add in that i think you're awesome and that Garden State was such an amazing movie.
Scrubs is a funny show, and oh yeah, you have good taste in music too.

I'm not rich, my friends: also not rich. Charity is wonderful though, so cheers and a nice pat on the back to you Zach from my penniless right hand, or left I guess, either way. They are equally destitue, although the left has plans to go to hollywood and become a star. Every night since he was 10 he has had dreams of finding himself under the spotlight, hearing the snap just before that magical word: "action". He angrily clutches a bottle and slams down a green plastic bottle of motor oil onto blocks of fake metallic looking material in front of the cameras as though it was Thor's mighty hammer, Mjollnir, hurling bolts of lightning down upon the evils of the norse world, grace, power, magnificence! The right has dreams of becoming a playwright in the tradition of Anton Checkov (he likes to pretend he's Russian but no one knows it because there isn't really anything he can do to express the fact that he's "being Russian now goddamnit". But frankly he's not that talented and will probably end up waiting tables and doing construction all his life.

So, anyway, I'm wondering, where did you get the costume? I mean of course you made the movie and all, but does someone keep every costume from the movie? Is there a huge warehouse somewhere with all the costumes from each of the hundreds and hundreds of movies made every single year? Or did Natalie just have it...

Of course I would ask the same question about the gas pump, but its pretty obvious where you got that. I mean how many gas stations are there in Hollywood right? At least a few had to have nozzles with red plastic.

Once again, glad to hear you're trying to help, I hope you get your bids... And hey, check out Sufjan Stevens (musician), one of his albums is on iTunes, but its not really the best of them. Good luck ZB.

I don't exactly know why I'm commenting. Call it a mix of curiosity and boredom, and the delusion that my opinion matters =P. I absolutely loved Garden State. Alot of things in that movie mirrored my own life. But yeah... stumbled upon this blog while looking at the Official site.

Hi Zach!

I regularly go to apple.com/trailers, just to see different trailers of new movies and in this way I discovered your trailer of Garden State in August in 2004. My first thought was “wow!!” and the second was “I must see this film right now!” Well… you might ask why I didn’t go to the cinema. The problem is that I’m Swiss and I live in Switzerland… Instead to watch the movie, I watched the trailer nearly every day. Whoever made this trailer has done a very good job. So I made my plans about how I could see the film. Fly to the USA..hm.. I didn’t want to because of the jet lag. Then I saw that the movie would come to England on 10th December. I asked a lot of friends if they would come to London with me this Saturday. Nobody, however, wanted to come with me except one. He wanted to stay in London more than one day, I just wanted to watch the movie actually and not stay there any longer. That’s the why I watched the trailer again and again, and again. I learnt all by heart. Then I read that the US DVD release was on the 28th December. I went straight to Amazon, but there it was too expensive to send a DVD to Switzerland, so I ordered it from a Swiss shop. They said that the DVD would come 14 days after the release… that was a very hard to accept, I nearly started to cry. I watched the trailer 20 times more and everything was fine again. On the 28th I checked my mailbox… nothing for me. Every day I looked if the DVD had arrived. After 8 days, I think, I’m not sure, it was in the mailbox. I tore open the envelope and I saw the cover of the DVD. At that moment I was so happy. Probably it was 12.23 a.m., that’s the time when I arrived home from school. So I studied the cover and the DVD itself, you know just testing if it was real or not. As you can imagine, the test result was positive. Actually I wanted to skip school, but I thought I had been able to manage waiting for nearly half a year so what was the difference of 2 hours. The lessons were very long, typical. When you want time to run faster, it creeps to mock you. Anyway, eventually I was finally home again and I was full of anticipation. I took the DVD and put it in the DVD-player, switched the TV on, took a comfortable seat, stopped thinking, started to feel and pressed play. I laughed, I felt sad, I was angry, I was shocked, I smiled, etc. I can’t say that Garden State is the best film I’ve ever seen, because there are so many other very good films. I can say that GS is one of the films (and there aren’t many) which really touched me, because I can identify with Andrew quite well. If I had to make a top 10 list of my favorite films, GS would be in it, but I really don’t know at which position.
That was the story of how I discovered GS. I hope you enjoyed it and now you know that you’ve got fans even in Switzerland. My friends’ thoughts are similar to all your fans’, who have made so many comments on your homepage. I read that GS is coming to the cinemas in Germany in March. I hope the film is coming to Switzerland too. If not, I shall travel to Germany, it’s very close to where I live. On TV films aren’t the same as they are in the cinema. So I hope your next film will not come to our cinemas nearly a year later. It’s for sure that I shall follow your career and I shall watch every single film you will make.

Greetings from Switzerland - Yves

Here's an idea: get some more of those Desert Storm cards and put them up, they are really cheap and people can buy them. I myself have many many sets. Aight keep cranking out the good stuff.

Zach-

I would love to bid on Natalie's outfit, but ebay doesn't furnish size info. If it were going to sit in a box or display case I wouldn't really care, however; I plan on wearing those jeans!

Nat looks like a little bit of a thing.....I wear size 2.

Ask her what size those jeans are and I will totally place a bid.

Looks like the gas nozzle has 17 bids thus far and is up to like $420.00!!

I have made this request on prior blog postings.....how bout the JERSEY TIDES T-shirt?

I want that shirt far more than the gas nozzle!

Put your t-shirt on ebay...I guarantee it will be a bidding war.

Still in love with the Braffster-

It's good to see that people are helping, but there are so many donations for the tsunami-victims that other suffering people in the world are forgoten...

I personaly think it would be better to donate without a specific purpose, so that the UNICEF can use it wherever it's needed most.

Ciao bello,
i just realized i am the last of an interminable list of comments...
do you really read all this? if yes, say just "yes cate" at the end of your next post cause i really wish to have a dialogue with you but i know it's a too big request so i'll know at least if you read my words.
don't worry, I read yours.

No where are $1000 when I need them?
Love you for doing this, the images still continue to break my heart and it helps to see everybody give all they can. In some sort of weird way, disasters like this always bring back some of the faith I seem to lose in humanity every now and then.

Posted by: Tamara | Feb 13, 2005 5:24:22 AM

zach,
are you freaked out by people who act like they know you?

anyway, scrubs is funny.

i got the dvd when it came out. and the soundtrack when it came out.
do i get some sort of prize for buying both?

Posted by: megasn | Feb 13, 2005 5:36:14 AM

what a good idea! here in portland, maine, we've been raising money to give to Heifer Project, by starving ourselves for 24 hours and collecting pledges for every hour we don't eat. it worked wonderfully last year, and 16 high school students raised over $1000 dollars. which sounds so small. but we were proud of it! :-)

Posted by: Sophi Presgraves | Feb 13, 2005 5:38:12 AM

Gosh if only I had some money.

Oh yeah and Scrubs the other week, when you danced, that was awesome. :)

Posted by: Marie | Feb 13, 2005 5:38:15 AM

Thats really cool that you are doing something to help. I only wish I could bid enough to win. Well take care!

Posted by: Allie | Feb 13, 2005 5:38:56 AM

its really late and i've had a migraine for more that 65 hours and well sleep is pretty hard to get atm....

regardless i FINALLY saw your movie...

fantastic my friend...so honest and just a great difference to all the crap out there....couldent take the smile of my face for hours....and it was pouring rain outside the whole day....

Just have to say something though....

what blew me away was the scene where your at nat portman's place and your sitting on the bed with her and that awsome Alexi Murdoch song is playing in the background and your talking about your jewhood. (my term....) you know, about how your jewish but you dont all the stuff ect... and about how during yom kipur you go to synagoge cause its kinda like guilt and you have to confess and ect....AND about the movable walls.....OMG....i was just speachless...THAT WHAT I DID WHEN I WAS LITTLE....

"yuri come here...now we're expecting alot of people tommorow...come and help me move the walls....we need to fit alot of tuchases in here"

thank you zack....thanks....its like you spoke to me....it was just like i am....and i think religion in general is all dependent on one's individual heart and choice....oh and cicumstance....

anyway...just wanted to say hi and hope your fantastic and good luck for raising all the money for Unicef...

i tried to raise money at work and well i think hopefully we raised $50,000 cause of some stuff i did....the more the better...

its funny though...did you know that if the tsunami didn't happen yet the same amount of money was raised but given to Africa to help with the AIDS epedemic it would have saved potentially 2-4 million people get infected in the next 5 years.....amazing and shocking yet true....

oh well can't do everything...

i hope you have a wonderful week...and i'm off for some sleep....

we miss Scrubs and Arrested Development in Australia by the way....maybe some campaining to ch7 with your help might get them back....(wink wink)...

enjoy the world...

Thanks Zach for having a big heart and keeping the aid effort going. I can't believe Nats entire outfit is up, that is awesome! I wish I could bid.

For those of you like me who can't bid on a auction for the wonderful humanitarian aid it will benefit, please consider a donation. Even $5 can make the world of difference and it only takes a minute of your time to contribute. UNICEF is an amazing organization directing their efforts at the children. Please learn more and do anything you can to help those who can't help themselves.

Love and Happiness!

Hey I think thats soo awesome. I think its great that you can use your "star power" to help those in need. I only wish I had enough money. I'll be spreading the word though.

Posted by: Devynn | Feb 13, 2005 6:24:36 AM

Thank you, Zach for sharing your life with all of us complete strangers. I just shared 'Garden State' with some people who hadn't seen it yet. We all had a good time laughing, crying, and enjoying what life has to offer us.
I am on my way to check out the auction items and see what I can do to help out.
Keep on rockin' in the free world!

what happenes to the stuff it no one buys it?

Posted by: Kristina | Feb 13, 2005 6:58:20 AM

I think it's great that you're trying to help. I wish I could afford those things and I don't have any rich friends either, gah.
I watched Garden State for the very first time a week ago (I know, I'm a year late :P) I watched it like 10 times before I had to return it to Blockbuster. But of course I will be buying the DVD soon, really soon because I can't stop thinking about it. And of course, I'll buy the soundtrack too. I know a bunch of people have told you this already, but thank you for making such a great movie. You're awesome. And I don't know why I'm typing this because you probably won't read it.. hah. Okay, I'm done now.

Posted by: Maria | Feb 13, 2005 7:29:48 AM

Oh, again, I lament my measly income. I work for a non-profit... if I were even slightly middle-class (heh!) i would definitely bid on Natalie's outift. As it is, I've assembled my own version. here is the outfit I wear when I'm feeling Samlike:

http://g.myspace.com/00057/36/21/57891263_l.jpg

Heh! How totally unoriginal of me. It's fun though, and no one at my office knows that my cute look is stolen from your movie.

Thanks again for everything,

If I could... you know I would. But lets see, let me check my pockets. I have....................... 25 cents, a hairpin, and some pocket lint. Does that count for anything? Cuz if it does, I'd be willing to donate them.

Anyways, I think that its great that you are donating these things to Tsunami Relief. I'm SURE they'll go for a lot and then everyone will be soooo happy!

Okay. Gotta make like a baby and head out. I love ya more than a fat kid loves cake!

P.S. Do you know what would make my day, or even my LIFE? An email from you! Wouldn't you like to do that for me?

Posted by: Whitney | Feb 13, 2005 7:51:13 AM

i would be ALL OVER the gas nozzle if i could. DAMN BEING A POOR COLLEGE STUDENT! anyways, thats really quite awesome that you are doing what you can to help with the relief. thats sortof the direction i'm dedicating my life to, well, healthcare and peace in the middle east, but also funds worldwide, but its always refreshing to hear of other people putting forth the effort. especially people that are so busy!

thanks for the blog, music suggestions, and good work! i'll keep lookin for 'em!

That is very sweet of you. Unfortunately as much as I'd love to have the gas nozzle I doubt I can afford it. Natlie's outfit is probably very cute too but it would got to waste as I am far taller than her. Happy Valentines Day, not my favorite holiday but whatever,

Zach I must say that you kick ass. it is awsome to see celebrtes give back, i wish that i had the money to help out the tsunami victims and also get that gas nosel at the same time but it sucks being a college student with no money! I hope it raises a good chunk of change. Rock On! Jersey Represent!!

Hey Zach,
Kudos to you for your good deed! Not only are you going to help loads of people, but you're also going to make the winners extremely happy. If I wasn't a poor college kid, I would definitely try to kick some ass in that auction:}

**Incredible Band Alert**
If you haven't already been told about the group Aqualung, you should definitely check them out when you have time. They're led by the guy who used to be in The 45's, and their song "Strange and Beautiful(I Put A Spell On You)" is gorgeous! Right now you can get their three albums imported, but I'm told that at the end of March they are going to release an album in the States. I hope you enjoy it!

Have a lovely day, and I know you'll get some good Karma going from your auction:}

That's so nice of you. Best of luck. I wish I had money, I would totally buy it.

On a side note, I'm really excited for this week's Scrubs. Your show makes my week go by so much faster. I have my favorite episode on TiVo ("My Lucky Charm"--you were brilliant), and I watch it everyday.

Posted by: Sara | Feb 13, 2005 8:53:04 AM

Zack, mind if I call you Zack? Ok then, Mr. Braff-Sorry if I'm commenting on the wrong post (good job on the charity thing), but it just took me like an hour & 3 cups of coffee to figure out how to write to you to say:
Just rented GS w/ my hubby last night. Thank you, thank you for writing the movie that is so true to us & that we would've written if we were'nt out partying all the time during our most creative years! 29yrs. old, born, raised, left, bounced back & forth, & now live at the jersey shore, I've talked w/ friends that have done the jersey bungee, & we're like, 'Oh, my God, that's so Jersey, that is totally what it's like to come home. Was he at that party we had?' You totally hit it (who started the 'x' couch roll anyway?). My favorite is waking up at a friends house to something freaky, smoking w/ someone's mom, then remembering a dr.s appmt, classic tru!! Thank you also for having Sam have normal person humidity frizz hair, my husband is in love, I see a pattern. We apologize for not seeing it in the theaters, but it's a real bitch to drive around here, we all bought the DVD to make up for it! I'm so glad the rest of the country loved it, Jersey is everywhere, scary.
Anyway, if you need some researching for a sequel on coming into your own, moving home (you're new, right of passage home) & trying to be a stable adult while surrounded by people who are still smoking pot w/ their Mom & asking you to go to the bar on a tues. night, or if you just need some porkroll, let us know.
Is it freaky having a bunch of people wanting to meet you & hang w/ you? cause I have one fan, the guy that works at the 7-11, & he freaks me out, I couln't imagine having millions of them!!
BTW, congrats to getting to this, it's like 3209? Hope you're on a laptop (of course you r, you're loaded right?)Time to step away from the PC man. We've spent a lot of $ on the park system in this country, go check it out.

Peace from the jersey shore...we're still here, help.

Wow Zach very pleased to see you supporting this excellent cause, although it doesn't surprise me, you strike me as a very generous guy. As always, thanks for making me laugh like hell once a week (and twice come Arrested Development time!)

Thanks for being you,

i think its really amazing how the celebrities are involving themselves in the tsunami aid as much as possible. thanks for being so generous! and i wish i could be just as generous but im a poor college student (i think poor college is redundant haha).

Posted by: Diana | Feb 13, 2005 9:28:41 AM

Looks like you've got some bids going, that's good! Although I often wonder who bids on an auction with 9 days left actually thinking they're bid will hold up for the entire time. Anyway, wish I could contribute, definitely can't on a teacher's salary. :) I loved the whole gas pump thing in the movie because that's actually happened to me. Well, my friend was driving, and we didn't get all the way to our destination before we reailzed it, we knew right away because it was very loud! And there may have been some pot smoking prior to the incident. That's all I'm going to say about that. :)

Posted by: Genna | Feb 13, 2005 9:30:15 AM

You could post a picture of Natalie Portman wearing those clothes from the movie like this one (http://www2.foxsearchlight.com/gardenstate/gallery/pict_10_1280x960.jpg )?

You're awesome for doing this. And being in Scrubs. And Garden State.

Zach,
You are a mensch and thank you for doing your part.

I'm on my way up to being one of the next great Jewish comedians.

Posted by: Daniel | Feb 13, 2005 9:38:29 AM

Barbra Striesand admires you.

Posted by: katrina2 | Feb 13, 2005 9:39:29 AM

Wow Zach... I love you. I mean, I love you. I realize that it sounds ridiculous to thank you for being a person--everyone is-- but thank you anyway. I just checked on the gas pump, and it's at $420 (haha) after only about 4 hours. If it's still reasonably low (under 500) in a few hours, I will definitely bump it up to there... After I check with my parents to make sure they won't slaughter me if I win. You see, I am a living-for-free-off-my-parents-college-student and "my money" is really "their money", and they've already given a lot to the tsunami relief.

Actually, I'm still a little bit worried that their donation may have been in vain. See, they donated a heifer, a water buffalo, and two goats through heifer.org-- but two days later the news reported that a plane with relief supplies crashed while landing--- because it hit a water buffalo on the runway! If that was ours (who we fondly named Frank) I will be a very unhappy girl.
Okay, I'm not going to make any music recommendations this time, becuase I don't think there's a chance that you've had time to listen to any of my previous recommendations. So instead, I'll recap. To this date, I have recommended:
Envoy (www.envoyofficial.com)
Sondre Lerche (www.sondrelerche.com)
Sufjan Stevens- Michigan
(www.sufjan.com)
The Notwist
(www.notwist.com)

Okay-- I lied, I snuck the Notwist in there this time. Oh well. Thanks again for reading and being human and shit.

Peace and love (I hate it when you don't say that) to you,
Amy

i'm gonna sound like every fan, but garden state spoke to me, like it did to everyone else (as indicated by its huge fanfare and whatnot) but it really meant a lot to and what i'm going through in my life. thanks homeboy (if that's not too creepy)<-run-on sentence

Posted by: Allisonny | Feb 13, 2005 9:48:10 AM

Hello.
I know you will NEVER read this, but I just saw your movie (then and went to buy the soundtrack)and I fell in love with life all over again. Thank you for that. I love the music you chose...eclectic...have you ever heard of Joe Messing in Chicago? Probably not, but hey, that is how people catch on...just think of it as my way of sharing the headphones.
I am a nurse at U of C, and in grad school for anesthesia...I think scrubs in interesting b/c I truly believe that residents have no clue sometimes (I work in the MICU). Then, there is the one that can make you laugh even while cleaning bed pans...they will go far.
Anyway, as I said after these I don't know how many messages...you are popular...
you probably won't read this, but I thought your movie was so great I should give you a pat on the back.
Take care,
Nicky

ZB:
Thanks so much for donating something for this worthy cause. I had won a cd from 103.7 The Mountain, KMTT, here in Seattle and since it was something that was sold out and valuable and I had gotten it free, I auctioned it off and donated the proceeds of that in addition to $50 of my own money in matching funds to Mercy Corps. I wanted to donate more money and felt that by auctioning off something like that, I'd have more funds to donate. The need is great and will continue and thank you for reminding us of that and for giving us another opportunity to give money to those who have nothing.

love and bubbles,

Posted by: Jaclyn | Feb 13, 2005 10:21:46 AM

Zach,
So glad to be in the top 200 comments! I am really impressed that you are involed in tsunami relief, because it is so important to do everything we can, and the sheer magnitude of this disaster is almost impossible to comprehend.
On a lighter note, I am 14, and my dream is to be an actress/director. You are a great role model for me, and am happy to have someone as genuine as you to look up to. I also just recently got my first "job" modeling in the most recent issue of New York Magazine, i'm on page 102, all the way on the left, with the hair. I'm sorry to be talking about it like this, but I have to say, i'm really excited! (And then, you know, if you saw it, and somehow i found out that you had seen it, i could say that I almost know you, because you had seen a picture of me, and I have seen pictures of you! Pretty cool!). So again, thanks for just being an awsomly cool person, and someone who I can look up to so much.
