Yub-Nub
"Ho, ho, ho!" said the pimp calling roll at the morning meeting.
Hello there everybody in blog land. I'm here with my final post of the year. For those of you that took the time to scold me for not posting more often; I'm sorry, but I feel dumb sometimes posting when I have nothing to say. But what the hell, I'll just ramble for a little bit. It's 80 degrees in LA, so I'm not really getting my hopes up about a white Christmas. Christmas is also my step-mother's birthday and to be honest I think she's a little pissy she has to share her big day with a Messiah. It's one thing to share it with a celebrity like Anthony Michael Hall or Tanya Harding, but I imagine the celebration of your birth gets upstaged when people are decorating trees in someone else's honor.
My dog has developed a strut. He lifts his back leg when he walks in what I can only describe as a "Pimp-walk". The vet told me not to worry, he just has Soul. I think it must be the new found confidence he's acquired from being in some magazines. He's also taken to humping other male dogs. He hasn't come out to me per se, but I promise to love him no matter what his choice of partner. I'll also support his right to join the military and receive same-sex marriage benefits.
I don't know much about Star Wars, but my buddy Donald Faison is an absolute fanatic. He showed me that not only did they add Hayden Christiansen's ghost to the end of "Return of The Jedi" in the new DVD's, but they changed the Ewok's song at the end of the movie!! What?! The Ewok's song was he best part of the entire franchise. My favorite part about it was that there was no Ewokese for the lyric, "celebrate the life". If you go back and listen to the OLD version, the song goes, "Yub, nub, eecheek ee wy-wy celebrate the life, yub -nub!" Classic lyrics. It's like re-writing "Let it Be" or that Celine Dion song from Titanic, it's just not done!
My new year's resolutions:
Forgo all exercise (including walking),
Learn to smoke (something thin like Capri's),
Take my loved one's for granted,
Stop washing my hands after twosies,
Laugh at babies who are late walkers,
Pull leaves off trees that appear to be flourishing,
Name the yet to be named voices in my head (something tough like Carl or Kyle)
Be less kind to bunnies,
Floss everything but my teeth,
Travel (but only around my yard and with a light carry-on)
Stop and smell the Rosens. (They're a wonderful family and absolutely compulsive about showering.)
Thank you all for your tremendous support this year. As my people say, "Shalom." It means, hello, goodbye and peace. It's like the swiss-army knife of words. It also means, "Doctor, it still itches even with the ointment." But only in context.
The Garden State DVD is out on 12/28. I'm not sure they made enough in this first batch, so pre-order if you want one early.
Just say no, stay in school, and nobody puts baby in the corner,
Peace and love,
Zachary Braff

Nice. Funny stuff. Shalom right back.
Evil Best Buy better have the DVD on Tuesday or I'm boycotting that place. When I initially went looking for the soundtrack a few months back they acted like I was crazy. "The Garden State soundtrack? No, we don't have that. We've never even heard of it."
Posted by: erin | Dec 20, 2004 1:11:56 PM
Zach,
Please don't smoke. And shalom to you too, even though Chanukah is over. New York tends to drag it out,so I think it's still appropriate. I'm sorry about your step-mother. Having a December birthday tends to get you jipped as far as presents and praise of your birth. I do understand.
Please let me know about "Andrew Henry's Meadow"
Happy Hols.
Much Love,
Kells

Happy Holidays, Zach! Here's hoping that this 8-degree Ohio weather makes its way back around to you in Cali for a white Christmas :-)
I thought my cat was developing a strut but I think it's more a shivered gate since my furnace is on strike and will only heat once every 24 hours, per a union agreement.

I love Star Wars, and Garden State. and I love that next week I can watch it whenever I want :)
I hope you have very Happy New Year. You have accomplished so much this year.

Hooray for postings. I love the resolutions man, I'm totally not going to exercise either. Being fit is too overrated anyway. I'd rather be a round butterball that everyone loves... but hopefully no one will kill me and eat me. Good luck with your dog, I'm sure he'll come out to you soon. It's always hard to come out to the ones you love. haha. Anyway, hope you have a great holiday and everything and you better believe I'm going to be one of the first to buy this movie on the 28th. Rock On Zach!

Zach, I hope the New Year brings you lots of peace, love and happiness. Sometimes I hate writing that because I sound like just a hippie but whatever.
...WHAT HAPPENED TO the "song of the day"
Well, I'll leave you with one.
John Mayer- (and no it's not your body is a wonderland...give the guy a chance.) The song is "Somethings Missing."

write to me if you get a chance. i am not crazy, i am simply a fan who is in HS. one of my best friend's b-days is on christmas also...and although shes okay with it, she insists she would get more christmas presents if her birthday was on another day. anyhoo, your dog sounds cool...even if he is gay. sometimes gay people (or animals) are cooler than straight people (or animals). interesting, if a bit sick, new year's resolutions. i like the one about being less kind to bunnies. just cuz they're cute doesn't necessarily mean they're nice bunnies.
i <3 GARDEN STATE and it is on my Christmas list. if i do not receive it as a gift, i am buying it for myself.

Dearest Zach (thought I'd go one uping all that regular "Dear" crap...not deer crap, that's different,
I hope you had a great holiday, were you able to go home to NJ? I celebrated Haunakka (sp?) for the first time with my boyfriend's family. It was really fun, plus, well, extra presents Boo-Yah! I am a practicing Hindu-palian, 1/2 Hindu (dad) and half Episcopalian (mom) they are like Catholics but with a 2 drink minimum. Anyway, I had a question regarding Garden State. Where did you shoot the Quarry scene? We thought it might have been in Clifton, NJ when I will soon be moving with aforementioned boyfriend. Thanks!
P.S I know you are all about supporting good music and you write about it in your blogs. Please check out the song "Funky Little Teapot" by the Debbie Davies Band. It is a great song about a teapot from Ikea, how cool is that.

80 Degrees?!!? I wish it were 80 degrees where I am right now. Instead it is freakin freezing.
My brothers are 100% obsessed with Star Wars and when they first re-released it a couple years in some gold edition or something the Ewok song had been changed. That was the only part of all of the movies that I enjoyed and I was pissed. They just laughed at me. I'm glad that someone else is semi-upset too. It makes me feel like less of a loser for caring.
Hey. At least your stepmom's birthday is not the day after St. Patrick's Day. It sucks. A lot. Everyone pretends to be irish and gets drunk and forgets that your birthday is the next day. No fun. But you get a lot of good "I'm Sorry" presents at least.

So excited about Garden State coming out. Just saw Closer yesterday, Natalie Portman was great in it. Just taught the word Shalom to my 2nd grade students, along with the holiday Hanukkah. We don't have any Jewish students, so they were excited to learn something new. I have a December 18th birthday and never got a party b/c it was too close to Christmas. Gifts also tended to string together...here is one present for both your birthday and Christmas. Saw you on Ellen, great job.

Sir, you are quite the wit, you are.
What kind of dog do you have? I have the ass kickingest black Lab EVA. Cooper Jones is his name and he is certainly a homosexual. However, this does not explain the fact that he tried to hook up with me one evening while I was watching the Simpsons, minding my own damn bidness. This was not a casual hump, this was no misplaced pickle, he was putting on the MOVES, he was. Needless to say I rebuffed his advances in a manner most fervent. Perhaps this scarring experience turned him on to the menfolk.
Now he grins placidly as other dogs try to play hide the salami w. him. Lucky dog.
Please write to me. I am hilarious. deirdrebhayes@hotmail.com

I have nothing to say! I've posted all my well thought-out comments and now that I have a chance to be near the top, all I can think of is how much I loved the movie and can't wait for the DVD, dig you on Scrubs, thrilled for the many many award nominations you're getting, jonesing for an Original Screenplay nod come Oscar time (wood, knocking) and am so happy you're an actual clever person and not just someone who provides excellent delivery of lines written by others. Thanks for giving all this love to people for whom a movie and a tv show didn't provide enough Braffage. Happy new year!

!i can't believe they changed the ewok song! but i hear that "real" star wars peeps weren't really fans of those ewoks anyway. ask donald....that lucas guy is a nut. i should have told him so when he made his appearance at the lucas company holiday party last weekend. but i was afraid that my true feeling for the party food (philly cheesesteaks) would come out. and note...george sure is fond of those cowboy boots.
anywho to show my appreciation, i saw garden state in the theatres TWICE! and when i heard the nick drake song, i nearly wept. the best use of popular muzak in a film in ages!
and i grew up in delaware which is like NJ's bastard cousin, so i can relate.
i think i love you.

What is it like, man to have your birthday on the same day as that celebrity from that US tv show scrubs and that the new hit movie not yet released in ireland; Garden State, Zach Braff. What is it like to share your birthday with him.
PS. Were you ever in a movie with Dean Cain. I mean, forget Colin Farrell, you starred alongside fukcing SUPERMAN

top 10, awesome. Yeah so I just checked out garden state for like the fourth time and possibly last in theatres at a 2nd run theatre. The sound sucked and there was too much ice in my coke but it was still just as good as the other times. Also i had a dream that i was trying to hook-up with victoria gotti from that show with her obnoxious kids but chevy chase kept getting in the way. Is that weird? Oh, and I'm sorry I accidently put baby in a corner last week but i was drunk. I'm sorry won't happen again.

Zach,
As a film student, let me thank you for the incredible inspiration that is Garden State. As a human being, let me thank you for the incredible inspiration that is Garden State. You are full of talent, but from what I can tell, you don't let it go to your head, so thank you for your humility. I'm not even in LA yet but I'm already jaded by it. It's good to know there are people in the industry like you. I would consider it an honor and a privilege to work with you someday. Thanks again for your masterpiece and also for your humor.
I wish you all the creative success in the world.
Take care,

Yay, my first relatively early post! It's my initial one since the production of The Diary of Anne Frank" I was in closed. (I played Anne) It was incredible. How was Chanukah? Funny, I just had the "multiple meanings of shalom" discussion with my Presbyterian friend.

I'm sitting in a very small library in a very small town in Nebraska trying not to laugh too hard over your post. The people here are a little odd and probaly wouldn't appreciate my laughter. Congrats on your Golden Glode Nom. for Scrubs. You've been deserving one for such a long time. My sister and I wanted to mention that over on imdb.com they have you listed on an episode of the Baby-Sitter's Club. My sister used to have some on tape, but we can't seem to find them now.

I just had to share.
Lucky me, Garden State is finally showing in our lovely cinema in this beautiful wee corner of the world (York, the old one in England), I have been moved to my core and am in a position to force every collegue of mine and every customer who walks through the door to see it (I'm doing quite well I've managed most of the staff a fair few customers)
Dodgy as it sounds you've shaken me to my foundation and opened my eyes to where I am in my life, I can't decide if it's a great thing being young and free, no ties to anything and nothing but infinate possibilities stretched out before me or whether it's wholly depressing, having no one in my life I connect to, stumbling around blindly in the dark tripping over opportunities I ceaslessly mistake for enormous hurdles.
Damn you Braff (imagine a shakey Fist towards the sky)!
I just want to give you a huge soul enveloping hug, thanks for reminding me I'm alive and being honest. I know a huge number of my customers and workmates have been touched in the same way so as a self-appointed spokesperson for all us of, thank you, I mean that sincerely, THANK YOU XxXx

Wonder if anyone else in here has written the word "Pentatuch" in their posting? Someone on here has mentioned a band "Over The Rhine" once before, and I heartily recommmend them to you. I love, love, love the tracks "Bothered," "Poughkipsee" (sp?) and "Later Days". Try 'em, you'll like 'em! And lemme know what you think!

Hey Zach,
Speaking of ewoks-- wanna hear a funny story about the music? When I was like 10 or so, I'd asked for the soundtrack to the film "Stayin' Alive" for Christmas. But, when I played the cassette tape (this was like in 1980, by the way, and I was, embarrassingly enough, into disco), it had the soundtrack to, I believe, "The Empire Strikes Back" and the Ewok songs on it instead! I ended up taking it back to Musicland for an exchange, and the guy at the counter didn't believe me and had to play it to prove that, in fact, the wrong music was on the tape. Pretty funny experience, and I just remembered it since you had mentioned the ewoks.
I loved Garden State... saw it twice in the theater and can't wait to buy the DVD. I am a high school English teacher, and I so much want to recommend that film to my students, but they are only 10th graders, and I don't want to push an R-rated film to those underage!
Anyway, thanks again for your creative mind-- you have made my year. Keep up the cool and interesting work!

Another hilarious post my friend (I wish). The dog thing was gold. I remember that little tune at the end of return of the jedi, that's kind of funny that he changed that, maybe he realized how corny it was. I really don't have anything else to say except maybe I love you. Love in a friendly way, not the other way, if you know what I mean. Anyway, I can't wait to get garden state on dvd and hear the the commentaries which I think it is safe to say that they'll be funny. I can't get over your post, I"m still thinking as I write. Heck, I might even read it again. Keep posting.....you make me laugh....and oh yeah the last song of the week was awesome. Have a good christmas man.........Later-Kenny.

anywho to show my appreciation, i saw garden state in the theatres TWICE! and when i heard the nick drake song, i nearly wept. the best use of popular muzak in a film in ages!
and i grew up in delaware which is like NJ's bastard cousin, so i can relate.
i think i love you.

Hello Zachary,
I enjoyed your post, it makes me smile/laugh at work, and then people ask me what's so funny, and I have to pretend I'm really working, and enjoying my job with unexplained enthusiasm.
Congrats on all your success this year, I'm sure next year will be just as great.
And you're right, NOBODY puts baby in a corner.

Have a good new year!

Haha.
Reading over the names of those commenting, I've realized that the ratio of girls to guys is about 6 to 1 I think. I got a little thrown off by Eugene, but luckily she explained herself. Good call Eugene. Kari too, I thought it was Karl at first, which is funny because not only is it a guy's name, but, as Zach so aptly noted, a tough guys name. Haha. Well anyway, proud to represent the Y chromosome possessing fans of Garden State. Scrubs too. That show better stay around for a while. It's one of the few that I watch every week. Okay, that's enough.
Adios.

Why couldn't the DVD come out before Christmas so that I can get it as a gift.
GOSH!
So, if you want a white Christmas, just come out here to NY/CT. It's about -11 degrees with the windchill and I almost died last night driving home. I would give anything to be in the warmth of CA right now. But we get Martha Stewart, Kathy Lee Gifford and Ron Howard celebrating here instead... b/c Greenwich is the cool place to be!
Come here w/ your pimpin dog and he can meet all the snobby Avenue dogs and get a soy latte from Starbucks...
yay for Christmas in Connecticut!
take care and I can't WAIT for the DVD
Posted by: redfraggle | Dec 20, 2004 1:40:49 PM
It's like -40 degrees (celsius) in Ontario (Canada) today so we most definatly will be getting a white christmas.
Thanks for everything, your dedication is truly inspiring.
Cheers!

I think your dog got a complex with the whole "I Like Bitches" shirt you bought for him. Terrible to nudge too early, isn't it?!

Yeah, my mom's b-day is on the 23rd and every year someone combines her X-mas gift and her b-day gift into one gift. How crappy is that?
Anyway, hope you have a great new year and all that. Though I don't usually post myself, I've enjoyed reading your posts this year. They always make me smile, at the very least.

Hey there, I wish it was that warm here (Milwaukee). I just moved here from Albuquerque and it's quite a temperature change. I think it's about 18 degrees outside right now..that should be illegal!
I am actually looking at moving to Burbank in the future to live with a friend of mine. I'm considering becoming a personal assistant. Who knows, maybe I'll end up working for someone fancy schmancy ;)
Have a fabulous holiday and I hope next year rocks even more than this year did for you.

You're not alone with your dog choosing to hump other male dogs, mine does the same.. only.. my dog chooses to hump his male COUSIN [dog cousin, of course]. I'm glad we have something else in common.
Speaking of "Nobody puts Baby in the corner" not only is it a great line from a great movie, it's a great song by a great band.

Hey Zach--Happy Egg Nog-
I definitely think you would look fabulous with a Capri dangling from your face--No--seriously-I don't know about your step mom--but I am comedian and I do actually know your step sister who happens to be one of the funniest women alive! I know--I'm sure everyone always tells you they know someone you know--like they knew your first exterminator or milkman or something, but...Happy Holidays!
My resolution--stop changing socks--and make a new law that no one is allowed to take the elevator to the second floor-
And the next time you are in New York--check out The Comedy Social on Wednesdays at Sin Sin---sense of humor is right up your alley--

Dear Zach,
I'm off to the mall for the third time in as many days and my Braff-sense was tingling so I knew that you posted. I WAS RIGHT! (Take that Dr. Phil, who just said that psychics are fake) Your new year's resolutions are strangely similar to my own, which could only mean that we are soul mates. Or that we were separated at birth, which would be weird because I am slightly younger than you (but legal, wink wink).
All of these 'year in review' shows keep talking about indie movies and how great they were this year and then they forget to mention GS. Don't worry, I've started writing letters to them all. Congrats on your Golden Globe nomination, I'm simply positive that you'll win.
I found that clip online of you & other people from Scrubs & lots of random people's favorite curse words. Yours is very long, but good nonetheless. :)
Can't wait til your next post in 05!

Rachel K.

Have an amazing New Year's celebration - and start looking for some snazzy clothes for the Golden Globes! And I'm going to have to add to the people that tell you to listen to songs because I just found a guy named Howie Day (I'm a little late but whatever) and I think you would like him. My favorite song is "Collide". Check it out on iTunes if you get a chance. Thanks for being so funny. You're the best.

Right on, NOBODY puts baby in the corner. When I was a kid, my friends and I would watch Dirty Dancin' over and over again. We got up to 8 times in a row once. Why us little girls were so obsessed with bad girls getting knocked up at summer get-a-ways, I don't know. But, damn, that was a good movie!
Zach, you been jiving to The Killers? If not, ya gotta get some. They're better than cream cheese icing, which is super, if you haven't tried it!

My mother-lovin' Rolnick, you get alot of comments, but I'll respond anyway because it will entertain myself.
My dog is female, but also developed the Big Pimpin' strut after we adopted her sister, Wicket (coincidentally named after the Ewok). Tinker Bell (the Pimp, not the Ewok) took to makin' some sweet minute man lovin' with other female dogs as well and primarily with her adopted sister (its not incest if they're not blood related!!). We were told it was to show dominance over other dogs, since Tinker Bell was the first dog of the family and got very used to being an only child. She did not cope well with sharing the spotlight. But I'm still holding out for her to grow into her own as a proud member of the lesbian society. If only her owner could be as lucky. But that's another story.
I just think she's got 99 problems, but a bitch aint one. I made a pun. A very very blatant pun.
Or maybe my dogs are just messed up because I named them after trademarked moneymaking characters of corporations.

Hey there Zach, thanks for the post.
I actually got to see the movie last weekend! I live in Sydney, and they're hardly playing Garden State at all....so I had to catch a train into the city for an hour and a half, wait for three hours for the movie to start and then watch it.
I thought it excellent. I loved the style/look of the film...and that crane shot where you and Nat are at the pet cemetary was absolute gold. I loved it so much I went to see it again, but this time picked it to bits and studied it. Very nice film technically as well as entertainment wise.
Regarding the DVD, I've been posting shit on forums for weeks to hype up the release, but I found out that the 28th is a US release. Wassupwidat? When will the DVD be released down here in Australia?
I'd also like to thank you for the movie as it's inspired me to make my own. I'm currently in the process of writing a short for my Year 12 Major Work which I'll be adapting to a feature length film after school. Thanks a lot man, you've given me a bit of direction with your efforts in Garden State...and now, for a 16 year old...I actually know what I want to do with my life.
Whether you read this or not, thankyou very much. I'm extremely appreciative of your work.
As for your dog...my dog is a...bitch....but she cocks her leg to pee. It's actually pretty cool....my dog is a tomboy. WOOT!

Anyways, smoking is bad, don't do it. Exercise is good, do it. I think you're a little mixed up, my friend. But you can keep smelling the Rosens. I'm sure it really makes their days.
Okay, well I think I'm going to go be a couch potato ((and how fitting, I live in Idaho, the potato capital of the universe)) I love you tons, I've already pre-ordered Garden State! YAY... 8 days!

This has NOTHING to do with the blog entry you just wrote but I'm writing anyway to tell you that you rock. . . so I read a comment you made a while ago that went something like this, No, I don’t think Hollywood knows what people want. Look, they make all these big blockbuster movies all the time and they turned down my movie which did really well. And I have to agree with you! From the blog to the video posts to the various talk shows I’ve seen you on, I’ve become a big fan BECAUSE you hit a chord with me in Garden State and you’re more accessible, down-to-earth, honest (“to be honest, I only wanted to be on the Jimmy Kimmel show because I heard the Shins were onâ€) and genuine than 99% of Hollywood. I never buy soundtracks or movie DVDs because I never like a movie THAT MUCH to want to watch it more than once but this time is definitely different! (I’ve already gotten two soundtrack CDs from 2 friends because obviously I’ve been raving a little too much about this movie and I can't wait until December 28.) Anyway, bottom line is I think you understand what the public wants. Keep it coming. You're awesome. Happy Holidays!

ZACH. I HAVE THE BEST IDEA!!
NEXT TIME YOU DO AN INTERVIEW ON TV, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE SAY THE WORD "ZORK"!
I've also got a story for you, and since you have the opportunity to IMPACT THE WORLD(!!), I'd like you to spread this little thing around.
My dad went to school with a boy called Stuart Niznik.
I kid you not.
My dad and his friends would always be very very sarcastic. And this Niznik kid was always very serious and didn't understand sarcasm.
So when my dad would make comments like "Oh, the floor is blue" but it was actually white (obviously), Niznik would always correct them.
So, that my friend, is what my family calls a Niznik.
PLEASE SPREAD IT AROUND.
I hope you understand it.
So, to make a long story short, assuming your retarded (which i dont believe you are), Niznik is just what you say when someone corrects sarcasm. And You say "OHP!! YOU NIZNIKED!!"
and then you all laugh.
And hug.
Have a great holidays:)
Spread the love!

I keep listening to the Garden State soundtrack over and over. I've also been watching the Garden State trailer over and over for no reason. I went to get the xmas tree yesterday and the lot was like owned by an Australian!! We walk in and she said hello and me and my brother were like WHAT?!? It was so odd :| And the xmas tree company has a website. There was this boy there and he kinda reminded me of Bud from Married with Children :| he was so hot hahaha. I shall post later and give you xmas songs in japanses to sing!
merry xmas and happy new year,

Hey Zach,
I thought you might like to hear about what's going on at good old Columbia High School. That whole "no religious music of any kind in school so we don't offend anyone" thing is still going on. Also I am unfortunately responsible for the outbreak of Whooping Cough at CHS... We're all supposed to be vaccinated, but it wears off as you get older. Apparently I got it and started the epidemic. Word got around and the school nurse called my house and was asking me all these questions. I had to go into her office and it was like she wanted to quarantine me. But it's all good. It's really cold in NJ now, should be getting some snow soon. That's about all the news from Maplewood NJ.

Zach,
If I asked you REALLY nicely, would you mail yourself to me for Christmas? Heck, I'll pay the postage! But it is NOT 80 degrees in Washington, D.C., and I am lonely and you make me laugh, so that's pretty much a good start, right?
...we can bean carollers with ice chunks.
It'll be fun!

Would you rather have your birthday on Christmas or Febuary 29th?
Posted by: Celeste | Dec 20, 2004 2:36:08 PM
Maybe it's terrible, but as I read this post, I heard it in JD's inner monologue. There was just something exceptionally JD about it.
Just wanted to say I am in total agreement about the Ewok song change. Blasphemy! I am holding on to my VHS tapes of the originals till Lucas swallows his pride and gives us back the original movies on DVD.

hahaha. i <3 you.

My goodness, I just just saw that you'd updated, and there are already like a million comments! You people are all nuts. Seriously.
Anyway, reeeeeeallly interesting resolutions you've got there, Zach. I am forcing myself to refrain from making a lame sarcastic comment.
I don't like Star Wars, either, but I do think the Ewoks are adorable. Not as adorable as you, though, of course. ;)
Lots of love,
Crystal

saw garden state for the 3rd and last time with some great friends. it was as wonderful as the first two times, but nothing can compare to how amazing and comforting it was to see the film the first time around.
happy holidays and i wish you an amazing new year:)

Zach,
I almost spit my gum out on my computer screen when I read the first line of your blog. I laughed reading the entire entry. I'm quite smitten. And thanks for the Dirty Dancing reference. Jennifer Gray and Patrick Swayze would be very impressed.
I have a similar conflict with my dog. Except she's a female and she feels it necessary to lift her leg when she pees just because she sees other cute-boy doggies do it. I just pawn it off to her being a tomboy.
Happy Hanukkah, Zach.
Cheers,
Kally

Posted by: James | Dec 20, 2004 2:43:31 PM
No washing hands after twosies! LOL! I'm with you on that...that'll be my #1 new years resolution! Teehee! and Yub-Nub to you too, you little Ewok you!
Truth be told, I just want to take my one last chance writing to you in the year of Garden State to say congrats and Thanks.
Congrats on all your accomplishments...as a writer, actor, film-maker...all the well-deserved kudos and awards for the film, either already bestowed, or yet to come...It truly deserves everything being thrown at it. Easily one of my faves of the year!
Most of all though, I want to say Thanks. I could identify with a lot of the themes in Garden State...the not feeling home anymore...the disconnection with the father...but mostly, the universal human theme of being in that limbo, waiting for the next big epiphany to happen in your life. Well I am happy to say it has happened now, and I am VERY happy. Everything is going great, and you have touched so many people with this film, Including me...so Thanks!
All the best with your future endeavours! Shalom! and Happy Holidays!

80 degree weather? Wow... that must be breezy. We had 98 today =/.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!

Man, Zach, you never cease to crack me up. Nobody puts baby in the corner, indeed! And the part about "celebrate the life" - I've always wondered why the rest of it's in Ewokese... Ewokian? Heh. In any case, your post is hilarious, and here's hoping you keep all your resolutions.
Except the smoking one. It's bad for you! Please don't smoke!
Posted by: Teija | Dec 20, 2004 2:44:56 PM
There's not enough physical violence in your resolutions. I recommend randomly kicking people in the shins.
Music: You can't go wrong with Otis Redding, unless you're dead inside."I've Been Loving You Too Long", "Let Me Come On Home"...grab someone you adore and dance them around the room.
Happy Chrismuhhannukwanzadan.
Posted by: D | Dec 20, 2004 2:45:06 PM
Holy crap, you crack me up. Your dog has a pimp walk? That is awesome.
Stupid star wars people, changing stuff.
Happy Holidays. I hope that everything continues to go your way.

Also:
Didn't the Breeders sample the Ewok song for "Last Splash"?
Changing it is just sacrilege!
Posted by: D | Dec 20, 2004 2:46:26 PM
I think I has the solution: I come here through the livejournal feed. They must not post things until much after you actually post. Which means my plans to be one of the first posters have been hopelessly dashed. I've got to start coming directly here. Damn lj screwing around with me! *shakes fist at screen*
Lots more love,
Crystal

Just FYI, just about the only cool person you share a birthday with is Paul Rudd.
I actually looked it up because I thought you might actually be born on the same day as Anthony Michael Hall. Boy would that be cool.
Posted by: Erik | Dec 20, 2004 2:46:38 PM
Nobody puts... your mom... in a... corner? I don't know, I was trying to make some sort of your mom joke out of that line from Dirty Dancing. It didn't quite work out. Did you see that new Dirty Dancing shit they made? What the hell, man?
In other news, congrats on the Grammy nod for the soundtrack, as it was pretty sweet. I've now become pretty attached to Frou Frou because of it. And to Natalie Portman, but that wasn't really because of the soundtrack.

My friend has a dog who has three legs (missing one of the front ones). Anyways, once I saw it lift up the wrong leg to pee, and it fell over. It was great... er, I mean, very sad.
Can't wait till the 28th (I'm counting down the days, and everybody thinks I am just numerically challenged as they believe I'm counting down for Christmas). Happy Holidays and congrats on the Golden Globe nom!

New Years resolutions sound good. Though I dunno if I'd smell the Rosens, people get a lil testy when you keep sniffing them. Hmm.. they changed around the original Star Wars.. I'll have to check this out, how disapointing, even if its a lil because I love Star Wars!!! I'm still hoping the 3rd one will be better than the other two crap ones (though Yoda threw down). I hope your have a fantastic Christmas. A friend of mine also lives in LA (if you see her, say hello for me) and she's upset that its 70ish over there, but let me tell ya from a NYC prespective it being cold and snowy over here isn't all its cracked up to be. I'd rather be at the beach. Anyway I must get back to cataloging my mixed CDs, is it bad that I can't remember half the artist and song names? Yea, well I'll try and see if I can remember by looking on Amazon.com. Well no song for the end of the year, but since its Christmas I'll be forgiving.
Lots of Love and cookies!!

Posted by: Josh | Dec 20, 2004 2:48:12 PM
Zach,
I must say, I love your New Year's resolutions. It's good to be different. I personally hate making resolutions, and don't do so because no one ever *keeps* them, myself included. And why put yourself through that kind of failure?
Merry Holidays, and Happy New Year. :)
Posted by: Jenn | Dec 20, 2004 2:48:24 PM
Zach, you're a blast to... erm, read.
Regarding Star Wars, I know a lot of people hate the Ewoks, not to mention their end song, but I love it. In fact I have a music book with highlights of John Williams' score, and that song (music and lyrics) is included. I cursed Georgee Lucas (thoguh not in person) when he replaced it with new music in 1997. Damn him.
Anyway, back to your "area" I've pre-ordered Garden State on dvd and so hopefully I'll have it the day of release, even though I haven't yet seen the movie. I blame our local cinemas who have the nerve to refuse to show it - the cheek! Thank god for DVDs.

I HATE PASSPORT AGENCIES!!! or any type of agnecy that requires you to cement over the fact that it is -8 F and pretend as if agency workers are the baby jesuses (sorry, I've never pluralized jesus before) themselves. On that note, daddy Rosen is extremely flattered and has requested for you to join him in a special smelling screening of the family's new choice of bathing products. RSVP

Just had to comment and say "BEST ENTRY YET!"
I've had much too much chocolate this day and haven't commented in a while. In my sugar-riddled brain that means I need to leave a long one but the caffeine has taken over and reminded me to 'stop while I still can.'
I'm off to eat gluten-free 'za and sing carols with my friends.
Merry Christmas Mr. Braff.
PS
We played this game where we put the names of famous people on the backs of others who had to guess who they were.
Someone asked for a tough one so I told my friend we should put your name on her back.
We didn't. We put 'Pebbles' instead.
Then I put a new one on my fellow 'schemers' back and I said "You're going to like this one" (with a smile)
"Is it Zack Braff?" she asked.
"No"
It was 'Kevin Smith.'

I had this weird dream about you last night. I dreamt that right after my grandfathers funeral you were standing outside the church, you hugged me and said how I looked like your wife (I guess you were married in the dream) but that you wanted me to know he really did love me...
anyhow, I never comment, but your words speak my truth. Much Happiness and brillant moments in the coming years for you..

Hmmm... not too far from the top of the list. :-D
I would much rather be in 80 degree weather than the 15 degrees we have right now in Virginia!
Thanks for all the hard work you do, AND for picking the best day ever to release the DVD. My birthday is December 28th so I was really excited to see that it would be out that day. Best present ever! Other than a horse, but theres not much you can do about that huh? :-P Keep up the good work and have an awesome holiday! :-D
Oh yeah, check out "Breathe Me" by Sia Furler. Its a pretty good song, kinda haunting but good.

Zach-Zach-Bo-Bach-Banana-Fana-Fo-Fach-Me-Mi-Mo-Mach-Zaaaach,
Truly, your charm must be stopped. Your New Year's resolutions had me laughing so hard my eyes filled with tears, my nose bled, and foam poured gracefully from my mouth. With all of my priorities in order I created my own list of resolutions before going to the emergency room:
NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS
*Sing everyone's name in Banana-Fana fashion
*When meeting new people pretend to have Tourette's Syndrome
*Play April Fool's jokes in February
*After farting, blame grandma instead of the dog (if grandma isn't in the room say "her stench is just that powerful")
*Drink in front of recovering alcoholics (make sure to constantly rub belly and say things like, "Mmmmm, it's like heaven in a glass.")
*Replace "Please" and "Thank you" with "Now" and "It's about time"
*Point and laugh at animals when they're taking a dump
*Omit the letter "Z" from vocabulary
*Become a oo keeper
*Take self more seriously
*Respond to every question with an obvious lie
*When someone reaches for a hug, act repulsed
and, most importantly...
*Eat peanut butter with every meal
Happy New Year, ach. Celebrate the life.

Hey,
First time FOG-er, long time reader. I'm in Melbourne, Australia so I only just got to see Garden State last night. I was going to go along to the 'Meet the Film Maker' thing you did here but by the time I found out about it the tickets were long sold out.
Any-hoo, just wanted to say thanks. Best film I've seen this year and certainly up there with 'Lost in Translation' and 'Tenenbaums' as far as "Films-that-admit-that-it-isn't-all-puppies-and-sunshine-but-life-is-still-pretty-good" go.
Thanks you for making a film that didn't let me down. I was really enjoying your story when it got to the scene with Large watching the video of Sam ice skating in the Alligator suit. I got a feeling of "Shit, they're going to be watching and everything is going to be happy but then she has a fit and all of a sudden we're reminded how shitty life can be."
But it didn't happen. You didn't go for the easy emotions. You kept it in check and went on to make a fantastic flick.
Thanks mate.
G.

Hi, Zach. One of the voices in your head here, I guess. Kyle's a tough name? That's cool, I suppose. I shall be buying your DVD soon, and yes, it is awful that the Ewok song is gone. Best of luck to you in the new year, good sir.
Posted by: Kyle | Dec 20, 2004 2:57:02 PM
Hey Zach. I've never commented before, even though I want to. I know you read some of them but I can't help but wonder if you actually take time to read them all. I love Garden State. I saw it 3 times in the theater, and working at a video store, I was able to rent it before the 28th and have watched it twice already. It's excellent. I hope you'll consider writing more.
The one piece of information I've been trying to find is how old Sam is supposed to be in the movie. I had assumed she was young until she mentioned working in a law office. I'm curious about the age difference between her and Large.
Happy Holidays, Zach.

DEAR ZACH,
HAPPY CHRISMAHANUQUANZA...I HOPE YOUR NEW YEAR KEEPS BRINGING YOU MORE GOOD THINGS. I REALLY THINK RESTRICTING TRAVELING TO YOUR YARD WILL GET OLD SOONER THAN YOU THINK. MAYBE YOU COULD VENTURE TO THE GAY DOG PARK TO FIND YOUR DOG A LIFE PARTNER? MAYBE YOUR COULD GO TO ONE OF THOSE "NICE" BED AND BREAKFASTS AND INSIST ON HAVING SMORES FOR BREAKFAST, FRESHLY MADE IN THE FIREPLACE SITUATED IN THE MIDST OF A LAURA ASHLEY/WAVERLY FABRIC INSPIRED PARLOR (NOT RELATED TO THE OLSON TWINS)? MAYBE YOU COULD TRAVEL TO LITTLE TOWNS THAT PEOPLE WHO GROW UP IN TRY TO ESCAPE AND NO ONE WHO WASN'T BORN THERE EVER GOES TO AND FIND OUT JUST WHY THAT IS? I DON'T KNOW, JUST FOOD FOR THOUGHT. NO MUSIC SUGGESTIONS RIGHT NOW SORRY...

white christmas? it is so cold and dry in chicago the streets have actually turned white - and the snow has been gone for days. it's like the worst case of dry skin a city can have. jergens has major money making potential here. and forget heat - my office decided to "spot heat" and not heat the bathroom, which is probably a form of cruel and unusual punishment somewhere. Rather, they decided to sauna-ize the stairwell, which you can imagine is where ALL of our computers and desks are.
great job on the last blog - always makes my day to catch a new one. happy post hanukah, merry christmas to me and a naughty new year to you and your dog.

If your dog does fall in love with whatever partner he may choose and wants to have puppies but can't because of obvious reasons, then i could hook him up with an adoption agency that doesn't discriminate.
ahh. your blog never ceases to make me giggle out loud to myself. which is kinda wierd when someone else is sitting close enough to hear and then i have to explain.... yeah.....
