Backgammon! At last, a sport I'm good at!

Hi and hello,
Back in Los Angeles! Amazing time in Australia; I highly recommend going there when you get a chance.

Thanks for the grassroots movement on the People's Choice Awards. You can still vote here.
* I just scored the most awesome, super-secret, mac-daddy, one-episode guest star for Scrubs. But my large-featured Semitic lips are sealed!
* I'm off to go skiing for a couple o' days; we're off till next Monday.
* Oh, yeah... I fucking love backgammon!

Awesome song of the week: Keane : "Bend and Break"

Thank you all for being my fans and saying such nice things, it is such a pleasure to hear your stories and share a laugh.

Peace, love and a suffocating bear hug,
ZB

Post From A Fan:

Zach -- You're my hero. Everytime I think of you, Garden State, Scrubs, or whenever I listen to the GS soundtrack (which is whenever I'm walking!) I get this huge smile of my face!! You have an amazing talent and I can't thank you enough for sharing it with us!

I hope you lead an incredible life!... All the best in Love, Health, and Happiness! Please tell me that one day you'll make a trip to Toronto, Canada and I'll have a chance to meet you!!

Take care,

Those crazy Aussies! I had one giving me dancing lessons the other week. Damn if that boy could shake it like a lobster. Or with a lobster. Whatever. In any case it's good to hear you haven't been eaten by a very large and ill tempered shark or anything like that.

Zach,

Question about Chicken Little: In the story, Chicken Little is a girl. So are you playing the voice of a girl or a guy in the movie?

Thanks,
~Nathalie :)

Backgammon is wonderful. Sadly, it's pretty much the only "sport" that i'm good at, too. Unless knitting has recently become a sport...though i did read about a kid knitting for PE credit, because it's just as "relaxing" as yoga. Go go public education system!

I think it's hilarious that you called up the film critic.

keane is awesome. i love the chord progression in the chorus of 'bend and break.'

You have uber good taste in music.

I haven't commented for a couple of posts because every time I remember to check you've already have 600-something comments. But now I happen to think - "Hmm...wonder if he's updated the blog?" - and there are 0 posts?!? Now that's just crazy...but anyway.

Not much to say...I'm home from college. I see you're going skiing? May I ask where? I should be skiing right now (I go to college in Colorado yet am stuck here in the pit of the world...otherwise known as St. Louis).

What was that whole thing about Turk's cell phone? I missed that episode (and was not too happy about it...but that's another story) and I never got the memo. I did hear though that the cast and crew actually started answering the phone...now that's the greatest thing I've ever heard.

I did manage to catch the Matthew Perry episode. I really liked it...I mean, how could you not? The part where he chases you with the plane - genius. Well maybe not genius...but it was really funny!

I realize by the time I click "post" there will already have been like 50 replies...but just know that I was the first person here. Not that it matters or anything *coughyesitdoescoughcough* because everything that posts on your blog does it for the same reason. We are all in love with you. Haha...just joking. Sort of...I guess.

Well...have a great time skiing! And playing backgammon...not at the same time though - or maybe at the same time...that could be interesting...

:-)

Ahoi-hoi Zach!

Man, how cool is this. I'm taking a day off from work today, so i was all snuggled up in my bed with kick-butt flannel sheets, and my girlfriend called me to tell me there was a new blog and that if I posted a comment, i could be in the top 10 or 15. So, I immediately jumped out of bed to post, cause, i don't know....thinking that you read my post makes me feel all important, cause you're totally my hero for doing practically everything you do. So, yeah, here's my post. I think you're the coolest guy on television, and I'm pretty stoked that my girlfriend thinks I look like you.

If you're ever in Charleston, SC (which you should be if you've never been here. Greatest City EVER!!!!) drop me a line. We'll grab a drink and make fun of all the real medical students at MUSC.

thanks!

when i finally took the GS cd out of my discman after about 3 weeks, the next cd i obsessed over was keane. though it was good, it was a short-lived romance. i'm currently a one song girl, completely in love with the rufus wainwright/dido cover of "i eat dinner". you should check it out if you haven't already.

take care and post soon, so i can continue to be completely unproductive at work...

When I came out of the press-screening for Garden State (totally in aw, of course), a fellow journalist said he thought the movies sucked (he also is approaching 75). I then explained why this movie is so brilliant, but somehow he didn't understand. So I kicked 'm in the nuts and ran...

Posted by: Pretoriaan | Nov 29, 2004 8:41:24 AM

Ah, Zach... Friends don't let friends drunk dial. Really. It only ends in pain... or never being able to live down the fact that you told your best friend "The Buddha is Errect." And before you ask, I really have no freaking clue where it came from.

Either way, I think you should call back and apologize, or ... you know... go on her show and hit her over the head with a pointy object cause anyone who can see your film and not be absolutely moved and amazed needs to be put out of their misery.

Dear Zach,

Hello. My name is Bevan Michael. Australians are crazy, and so are you :)

I saw Garden State back in August, and fell in love with it. The script, the direction, and (of course) the Natalie Portman. But what most affected me was the honesty of your acting. So many Hollywood stars are so unbelievable in their roles because they play the "character" rather than the person. You don't. And I really appreciate that.

I am an actor myself (currently in school in Dayton, OH) and I cannot begin to convey to you how much of an inspriation your film was to me. So... thank you, I guess. Thank you so much.

Glad to see your back, even though I dont know you. Haha...whatever.

Listen to some belle and sebastian and possibly calla. eerie, but nice.

good day zach braff.

Posted by: Mike Roffman | Nov 29, 2004 8:44:25 AM

zach to the braff,

haha. such a good story. i have to leave for class in about ten minutes, and i woke up no more than fifteen ago and was uber tired and bored until i read that annecdote. way good times. i actually know TWO people alone who said garden state wasn't really for them. so i told them to go eat their own heads and then stay out of my life like for ever like...actually, i just said "ok" and sort of walked away. because i'm cool and collected like that. what.

sounds like you had quite the bodacious time in australia. i've never been, but hey, it's only a flight across the international date line away. i'll get there soon enough.

oh by the way, i've been going on a shins...rage...recently. last night i had a dream that i CALLed TURk and played "past and pending" on guitar whilst singing along horribly off-key. good times, good times. james mercer 'n' crew are quite the shit.

skiing rocks the casbah. for serious. i've never played backgammon, but i can imagine it totally blows the socks off skiing.

i miss new ali g episodes. do you ever watch the office? way funny. those british folk sure can make good sitcoms. i'd highly recommend watching a few episodes of that if you've yet to. i don't like jelly. i just don't trust how it moves.

yeah. so. have a splendidly superb time in skiville and keep being happy. you're a person lots of people can look up to simply for being so totally tubular.

much love and then some to overcompensate for the fake fern old woman,

Wow, I just came online to comment on last week's post about how everybody's music suggestions were awesome, especially all of the people who said that Keane was great. Now I'm a fan, and Zach is too, that's so cool to hear.

Oh, and I'm a big supporter of truth in drunkeness (not the sloppy, throwing up kind of truth you tell someone while you have your head over a toilet, but the kind that lets you let go of your inhibitions after you throw back a few). So for that, go Zach! Though, I wouldn't try that in your home country. Then again, we'd probably think you were even more awesome.

So here's to peace and good hangover cures,

Wow! When I usually get a chance to comment on the blog I'm like 6584 but today I'm rather high up and, of course, I have absolutely nothing interesting or funny to say at all. Why do things always work out like that? I suppose I could just ask you for an interview. I'm 16 but I write for my local paper and have been quite effective in persauding famous bands to give me interviews. I loved the movie and could do a pre-DVD review typ of thing complete with a Zach Braff interview. PLEASE,PLEASE,PLEASE,PLEASE,
PLEASE,PLEASE,!
You can e-mail me at stascat@aol.com. BTW, pretty much all of the bands or musicians that were on your soundtrack have winded up on my xmas list. You have great taste! Oh, and I think you would like the Wicker Park soundtrack- didn't see the movie but a friend told me the music was great so I bought it and now I love it.

Posted by: Kelly | Nov 29, 2004 8:47:01 AM

Hey ZB, I have lurked around this blog for ages now, and finally feel like leaving a tidbit of support.

Scrubs has to be my favorite scripted show, ever. No matter what my mood, when Tuesday rolls around and I sit to watch, I'm just constantly laughing, and feel good for at least a day afterwards. After finding this Blog, and seeing your movie, you have quickly climbed to my favotire actors list, I think you have a more powerful voice then you may realize, mainly because you seem so much more real and tangible then alot of "Mainstream Hollywood".

Keep being yourself, it's what we all love about you.

When I started writing a comment I was ninth and now I'm like 40th. o poo

Posted by: Kelly | Nov 29, 2004 8:48:33 AM

So since I started reading your blog, I dreamed of this moment. A moment that I could write something witty and charismatic. Now that the time is upon me I unfortunately am at a loss for words. I could say the whole "Garden State was way cool!" thing, which it of course was but that's been done. I could also say how much I dig Scrubs, which again is the truth but I think we're all aware of that too. So I'll name my animals and my top four favourite (I'm not English but I like to spell like I am) words.
Eh-em:
Atticus
Harper
Armani
Fredricka Froggy Bottoms

I know, I'm a total dork

Fleeting
Quirky
Yum
Epiglottis
Mind-bogglingly

I'm not sure exactly what purpose the epiglottis serves but I think it's important.
Now, to be kind of serious, I think you are a brilliant person and you have done an absolutely wonderful job in everything you've done. Please never stop making me giggle!

So I was on a plane to get from point A to point B the other day, and the strange thing was I suddenly found myself compelled to tell you a whole list of strange things that had occured up to the point of the "Fasten Seat Belt" being turned on.

Considering I don't know you and the fact that I'm over 15 (two times to be exact)so I have moved on from that point in my life where it would be my lifes goal TO know you... I did give me pause that I started a long list of things to tell you. Here are the highlights:

a. I'm pretty sure my Super Shuttle Driver was a body man for the mob. I was just waiting for him to pull of on the side of the road "whack" a guy and throw the body over the siderail. Maybe it was the way he handled the luggage.

b. the person sitting next to me on the first leg of my flight was feverishly going through the SkyMall catalog. AND she stopped on the page with the cat stroller!!! She was fairly elderly and looked like someone who would have a cat in a stroller. I have no proof that that was what she was ordering.

There's more, but they were fairly inane so I'm not going to waste any more of our time.

Anyway, I loved Garden State. I saw it three times in the cinema and frequently have Garden State quotation filled conversations with my co-workers (one who recently saw your film "life changing" is how she described it). However, since we are a group of nurses who deliver babies we've gotted some really strange looks from patients when referring to the "wet beaver" scene. Yes we should know better. Usually we think we're out of ear shot. Guess not.

Looking forward to the DVD being out.

Have a great holiday. Here's yor safety tip: When lighting the menorah DO NOT WEAR A FAKE FUR WRAP. I only tell you this because my great-aunt did last year, set herself ablaze, but fortunately was only lightly toasted (Figuratively not literally).

Have a good time skiing!!

I love skiing! I'm not very good. Actually I'm really bad. Yay for the bunny hills!

I can't WAIT for GS to come out on DVD. I actually have a countdown to the release date on my desktop calendar. *bow down the the geek*

I saw people magazine and was all dreamy eyed for a while because they names you as the sexiest overachiever. The thing is that I agree with them. You are an overacheiver. but don't worry we all love you for that.

Oh god. I'm turning into such a dork. Yay Star Wars! BTW Scrubs was the GREATEST this week!

Zach I know it sounds cheesy but I know the perfect next role for you.....Take it in slowly....TEEN WOLF 3 Back to school...I know what your thinking how could you do it without MIkey J...Heres what you do, Mike is your long lost Father and you havent seen him becasue you've been living in the wild with other wolfs. yada yada yada you come back into the real world and you adapt to a new school (encino manish) and the funny never stops. Ok Zach you think about the role that could have you accepting a little gold man and get back to me.

Chris Apple ( ya coolest last name ever)

Zach,

Your are brilliant!

Guess what I did on Thanksgiving? The company I was with that evening was making me ill, so I 1-800-Fandango'd Garden State and found I only had 25 minutes to make it to the theatre from Brooklyn by subway. I made it without a minute to spare.
The movie was great, it was my second time to see it. I was dissappointed because the movie was out of focus though! No one was geting up to tell anyone, so I took it upon myself to let the box office know and they said they would take care of it.
Needless to say it never happened, the entire movie was out of focus, even the credits. Very frustrating to say the least and I couldn't get as lost in the movie as I did the first time, when it was in focus.
I expressed my dissapointment to the manager on shift afterwards and he gave me two free passes. Garden State, with a friend I guess!

You inspire me and your movie makes me happy!

Huge Hug,
neal

Mancala is greater than backgammon.

Koufax is greater than or equal to Keane.

ZB I love love love you as always.

That drunk dial was HILARIOUS!!! She deserved it, that old hag.

Voted for you and Scrubs like crazy for the People's Choice Awards.

Can't wait to see who the guest is that you scored for Scrubs!!!!

Yeah for you for being on People's 2004 Sexiest Men list. I totally agree.

Have fun skiing. Who are you going with? Are you dating Mandy Moore or was that just a rumor?

Love Keane. Love Backgammon. Love you and Scrubs and Garden State.

Love the suffocating bear hug,

THIS IS GREAT! because you said your song of the day was Bend and Break, by Keane, I FINALLY convinced my roommate to listen to them! this is fantastic, thanks! *yay for Bedshaped too!*

Posted by: cait | Nov 29, 2004 9:03:44 AM

I think that it's pretty fucking hilarious that your friend just happened to know the lady's # who gave you and your (awesome) movie a bad review! I for one cannot wait until December 28 - because it's my B-day and it's the day the movie is out on DVD :) - keep up the good work Zach! I heart the Movie, Scrubs and You!

Posted by: Sherri | Nov 29, 2004 9:04:03 AM

Incredible. OK, so my question is, when is Scrubs going to be released on DVD?! I'm so buying it. And Garden State, too. Love it, love it.

Ah Thanksgiving! Grand holiday fun if you dont get stuck on a train for three hours. Three hours being approximately half an hour longer than the trip was supposed to take so my quaint and precious two and a half hour tour of the eastern sea-board turned into an almost six hour debacle of train, cranky people, and broken engines.
An additional note: I forced my entire family to watch A Very Merry Mupppet Christmas, including my two year old nephew who had other plans of running around naked, but I strapped him down, fully clothed and made him partake in the fun. We enjoyed those Muppets and your cameo was of particular note. So not only is Garden State hands down the best movie of the year (75 year old Aussie women aside), but you have amused the muppets. A fine feat. Thanks for the entertainment!
Continue to kick ass and create the best entertainment on the small screen, big screen, and now in the world of muppets as well!

Since when is backgammon a sport??? Cause I'd so be the Michael Jordon of it.

Posted by: Amanda | Nov 29, 2004 9:07:56 AM

LMFAO!

i haven't posted since first seeing the movie this summer, but i've been reading (thanks to LJ feed. sweet!)

i even went over to the people's choice awards for the first time ever in my life -- i don't do mainstream, dude, so you appreciate that i compromised my principles. or something. ;)
anyhoo, you rock, scrubs rocks, and fraggles most definitely rock ;)

loved the bidet saga btw, and yea! you told the aussie hag with the dead ferns right! LMAO

i love that you're real and not jaded and that you share that with us, and yet hopefully you still have a life uninvaded by gobs of people you don't know and that any pet rabbits you may have stay healthy ;)

ooh! and check out my local peeps new band "truck stop coffee"; they're excellent musicians and songwriters!! www.bandzoogle.com/users/TruckstopCoffee/

and other hot local peeps "The Freakin Hott" totally rock too (they ROCK the house live - maggie is sooo kewt and aaron plays mean guitar! d/l some tracks here www.brentindeed.com/freakinhott.html)

enjoy!
if you're bored with L.A., you should totally come to Indeedapalooza at Red Lion Pub in december to hear them play kick ass and have some good beer with cool peeps (yea right, but what the hell ;) )

cheers!

Zach,

Drinking and cell phones don't mix! Once I was riding in a friend's car. We were behind a truck that had one of those "How's My Driving? Call 1-800-XXX-XXXX" signs.

I called the number and informed them that the truck was doing a fine job stopping at all the red lights and staying within the lanes.

Keep those music recommendations coming! Great stuff! (Am planning to put all of your recommendations on a CD to burn since my GS CD is nearly warped from repeated play).

PS. We watched "Manhattan Murder Mystery" this weekend for the, er, 5000th time (my husband's favorite film) and I caught the scene with you playing Nick. How awesome must that have been to work with Woody Allen and Diane Keaton and Angelica Huston etc. etc.!

Posted by: Tricia | Nov 29, 2004 9:09:21 AM

awesome story from australia. ive always wanted to go there, maybe i will avoid it b/c of the danger of tvs on the dashboard. anyway, im sure that you had fun talking to that lady and came up with some good comebacks. cant wait to get garden state next month. i wanted it for my bday, but my bday is before the movie comes out...you should really get it out before xmas...you could prolly get a lot more sold that way. its probably gonna sell out in the first 5 minutes as it is...but anyway, chat later!

Posted by: sara | Nov 29, 2004 9:10:18 AM

You should really get your driver to carry a video camera around with you and document these-such moments. It would be great to have a video to look back on, to watch yourself (and of course for everyone else to watch also) telling this woman where to go. I bet it was an interesting night for her.

I can't wait to find out who this guest star is.

Posted by: Mercedes | Nov 29, 2004 9:16:17 AM

AHAHAHAHAHA that is awesome! Seriously, I think that is the best story I've heard in a long time. And when you were describing her in the beginning I swear I pictured plants on her set. Hah.

I think the fact that GS is more about the characters (or, "talky", but I wouldn't really call it that...I am just bad at thinking up words, especially when I am sick) is what makes it so great. What does she like watching, xXx?! Pahaha...best mental image ever.

Ahhh, no, now I'm excited and must find out who it is! WHOOOO! I think I will use your own tactics against you...e-tickle attack!!!

I don't know how to play backgammon. :( Nobody in my family does, so nobody can teach me, and I suck at learning from instruction books. How sad. I like playing Star Wars Monopoly, though!

:) Well, thank YOU for keeping this blog and letting us talk to you. It always brightens my day when I see you've updated. :)

Hugs and marshmallows! (Cause who doesn't love marshmallows?! Other than the people who know what's really in them.)

Well first off, I really enjoyed Garden State. My boyfriend and I were just talking about how we think it was one of the best movies we saw this year. Second, I too thought DVD players in the dash were illegal, until my dad came home with a his new BMW. It is a little frightening, but I don't think he's tried using it while driving yet. Also, are you e-mailed your livejournal comments? I usually read your blog via livejournal.com so I was wondering because sometimes people start bitching each other out "he can't even read your comment from here" sort of thing. Anyway thanks for providing us with even more entertainment through your blog.

Posted by: Christel | Nov 29, 2004 9:21:19 AM

Haha, awesome aussie story. Reviewers are always wrong. But I guess they look more at how the movie is made and how the actors and actresses act, while most viewers just want a good laugh/cry/scream/whatever or see someone really hot.

keep being awesome...

Best comeback ever. I love being able to call people out on their crap. You freaking Rock my Socks Zach Braff, no doubt!

PS- Not usually this inarticulate, but I'm at work and your story cracked me up beyond belief, so thanks for uplifting me on this Monday post-Thanksgiving

Way to Go Zach!

You tell that old woman WUS SUP!! that was a hilarious story, i'm laughing at work! i wish i would've been the girl with the cell number so you could've been tickling me...;) I can't wait to see who the secret guest star is. Word! and you've probably heard this before, but "hallelujah" (don't know how to spell that) by jeff buckley is AMAZING. but i'm sure you knew that.

Zach,
Please come and whisk me away on one of your adventures.
The Australia trip sounded excellent.

Suggestion: Come do some theatre in NYC.
I will speak for the entire acting community there, we need someone like you on stage ASAP!

PS I keep seeing random members of the Garden State cast walking around the city streets. One of those random people happens to be a teacher at my acting school, weird eh? Thought you'd like to know.

Enough rambling for now, listen to Jamie Cullum won't you?

Posted by: Sarah Ann | Nov 29, 2004 9:24:00 AM

We should get married.

Posted by: Melissa | Nov 29, 2004 9:25:58 AM

Not only do I love you for GS, but you also dig Keane.

I think it's incredibly fabulous that you actually drunk-called the blue-haired lady (I assume she was blue-haired? She sounds like it). My friends actually don;t mind my drunk calls so much, as they say they're incredibly funny.

Another music suggestion: U2's new album, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. Particular favorites are Vertigo, City of Blinding Lights, Miracle Drug, and Sometimes You Can't Make it on Your Own.

Oh, man, it's a reminder that music can still be great.

hey zach!
I hope you had a great thanksgiving. have you gotten any of your christmas shopping done? better jump on that quick or it will sneak up on ya! i have a couple suggestions of great singers that i think you will appreciate, the first is a guy named Warren Barfield, strange name but great voice! the second is Shawn McDonald. They are both under ground singers waiting to hit the scene in a big way. Check them out if ya like. Im still jammin to your sound track, its in my car as we speak. Thanks for taking the time out to write to the fans. i know that they all appreciate it! have a great time skiing, and dont break anything!!!

p.s. i am actually in the midst of learning backgammon and i love it!

I honestly think that anyone who gave GS a bad review just didn't get it! I think it's too creative for some poeple in the sense that it doesn't follow the same structure as every other crappy, predictable Hollywood blockbuster. If it isn't the same as everything else, there must be something worng with it, right?
(By the way, I sent my parents to go and see it and they REALLY loved it - they are both over sixty!)

Posted by: Julie | Nov 29, 2004 9:34:18 AM

I wonder if the old lady will mention your phone call on her show...

I think it's pretty funny she stayed on the line and talked with you. Either Australian's are much more polite than the average American, or they have a liberal phone taping policy that she was taking advantage of.

Keane is awesome. By the way, does Bonnie Somerville have an album/plans to record an album? I love her song on the GS soundtrack.

Posted by: erin | Nov 29, 2004 9:36:23 AM

Heh. People like that are really cool...

As is Keane. Freaking god. I love Keane.

Posted by: Sarah | Nov 29, 2004 9:37:41 AM

that should be "wrong", not "worng". What's worng with me?

Posted by: Julie | Nov 29, 2004 9:40:17 AM

I must say Zach, the call to the movie reviewer was very Ryan Adams-esque. If it's possible, I think I like you even more now.

Posted by: Sarah | Nov 29, 2004 9:40:31 AM

You just gave me such a great laugh! Only problem is that I have lost my voice and so it hurts to laugh and I sound like a cross between a dying mule and a boy going through puberty. Yes!

Oh Zach Braff...you are my favoritist. I am already talking your movie way up to customers at my video store. Can't wait until it comes out. It's going to do soooo well. Maybe you can come sign autographs. Yes, yes, come to my shitty little turkey town of harrisonburg, VA! It's no Australia...but there are some diamonds in the rough here, matey.

Peace out, superstar,

faith

Posted by: Faith | Nov 29, 2004 9:49:36 AM

haha that is really funny that you actually called that lady who viewed your movie as "shitty". But it was good you didn't fly off the handle and start cursing at her for not liking your movie. Don't worry Zach she was probably some old bag that is still stuck in the "Driving Ms. Daisy" era. Hell, she probably played Ms. Daisy! Just know that whenever you get discouraged that back-pill popping movie reviewers are talking bad about your film you have millions of fans such as me that deeply appreciate your work. I am glad you enjoyed Australia and hope you have more fun skiing.

In your words: Peace, Love, and Fresh Powder.

Hey, Welcome Back!
How'd you like returning from Australia, where it was summer, to this bitterly cold Californian November? Eh, well I'm sure it's no biggie for you, being from Jersey and all, but I for one am freezing my arse off... Whatever though, glad to have you back in the states :)
love, nik*

Posted by: niki* | Nov 29, 2004 9:50:27 AM

hiii. after months of lurking i'm finally commenting (and yes, i know you read these, i'm just shy).

first - garden state. awesome. the way it was shot, and all the colors and images, just fucking beautiful. i'm 23 and on zoloft and have no idea what to do with my life (secretary right now, but obviously not forever). i'm thinking of moving back to my hometown, but...eh. the real world is so scary. for years i was looking for holden caulfield, but since garden state i think i'd really be happy with an andrew largeman.

your stories always make me smile. i wish you could see the mental images i was getting of your australian drunk-dial episode, makes me wish i had directorial talents. (i once drunk-dialed a member of good charlotte, as well as my mom. she's also drunk-dialed me on several occasions. i never want to hear about my mom's dating life again...cringe!) you should def. consider writing a book of short stories/anecdotes.

also, i'm ridiculously ticklish (everywhere!), so if i ever happen to meet you, i hope to experience your legendary tickling skills. tee hee.

and...just in case you have time, here is a random question that i love to ask: if you could have wings, gills or a tail, which would you choose; and what kind (feathery, leathery, prehensile, fluffy, etc.)? why?

(i would want huge, beautiful grey feathered wings)

anyway, thanks for being so awesome, rock on.

love, liz <3

Hey Zach!

You think there is anyway I can get Turks number so I can call it and talk to you? haha you probably won't answer but oh well why not try? I unfortunately missed the Scrubs episode where the number was posted and since we are in the DVD-era now no one recorded it for me :(. If I could get it I would appreciate it.

Peace, Jordan

So, you were drunk, right? Must've been, or so I theorize. Still, nice set on you for taking her to task. Probably the first time that's happened to her.

I review books on the side, and sometimes I live in fear of that sort of call, if I pan a book. But damnit, if it's intelligent, it doesn't deserve a pan. Garden State was intelligent.

i have to say you're LJ sounds pretty much like everybody elses lj on my f-list which isn't allowed! you're not allowed to sound so normal! you're famous and you've made a movie! have an ego for Gods sake! *tuts*

*giggles* people are saying that they can't wait for the GS DVD to come out....where here i am waiting for the movie to come out in the UK, tis all i ask! i'll even pay ;) loL!

Go you man! (thats all i have to say on that subject) tho isn't it such a nice coincedence that the person that you met had the number of the person who gave your movie not so good a review!

i have nothing else to say, i cud ramble.....but then you'd get stories of cheese toasties, spoons, a guy called joel and interviews with sean astin (which i missed btw grrrr)

Keane rock! i have the album, go you for liking Keane! Bedshaped is a beautiful song too :) thats one of my favs off the album!

*nods*

*ps* thank you for not having an ego....at least not a very big one...that shows over the net! *nods some more*

hey Zach, couldn't let a post go by without a comment. I love to hear silly drunken stories, especially when they come from you. But drinking + cell phones = bad news. The other night I was at a party and I went to pee and left my phone with my friend... and when I came back (and it took awhile, since I couldn't exactly walk a straight line) she had proceeded to dial up everyone in my phone book and was actually talking to my roommate when I got there. Errr. I got three days of "did you leave me this drunken voicemail?" "why did you call my phone last night?"

Anyway... that's not a very funny story, but it was the first one that came to mind. So, continue to be the most awesome guy on the planet. Carry on.

Sarah L

Posted by: Sarah L | Nov 29, 2004 10:05:30 AM

Any story that involves a BMW, Cell phone, dead ferns and an awkward silence you know has to be good! And she honestly didn't think you would hear about the review? I think she may have forgotten about this thing they call the "internet" or that fact that I'm sure you have spies down there in the very inner parts of Australia, aka friends who live there.

Good to know you had fun! Continue the pimping of Garden State! Everyone must see it! And people in television actually get days off? Gees...I'm totally in the wrong job field...>:| Take care, enjoy your skiing, just don't impale yourself on your pole...or a tree...or another skier. Especially at downhill velocity.

You rule with your supercoolness and you are a genuinely good guy. Your movie kicks ass due to your smarts & talent. Good luck.

Great work in Merry Muppets, you should have mentioned you would make an appearance in that on here, I am sure many people would have liked to see it that may not regularly watch the muppets like I do! So what was Miss Piggy REALLY like? Did you get to meet Kermit? I mean that would really be something to let you know you've made it big, meeting the green guy!

Ahhh, how fantastic is Keane???? I just bought their album today, and am listening to it as we spe- er, type. Just sitting here thinking how kickass Keane is. And lo, you think so, too. Must be fate!

Not.

You know, not to be in support of dead ferns and all, but perhaps this review was good for you. Not that I consider you much of an egotist, but then again I don't really know you, just what you share here. It's always good to have an occasional reminder to keep our feet on the fround, oui? Listen to me, I'm so zen, haha.

And dude, tell the LJ people you don't read the comments there... Or do. Or whatever. Stop ignoring me, damn you! :oP

I've still not decided on that art yet (If you even read that last comment of mine... Oh, wait, wait! You read them all! My bad. Yes, I'm going to stop fucking with you now.) You have no idea how much art I'm doing this month. It's insane.

Take care!

Tickling is the best way to get an answer out of someone.

So you ski? I've never tried. I don't like snow very much...why yes, it's pretty...and if you are properly attired it's fun to have a snowball fight and go sledding, but falling in it hurts...because it's cold...way too cold.

Don't listen to that lady...she probably gets better ratings if she disses you.

Zach I can't believe you get back right before Chanukah (and my birthday...the night of my birthday Chanukah starts). I hope I get a call on my birthday...I'm "Kelly from Connecticut".

If you need any help on "Andrew Henry's Meadow" let me know.

Enjoy the snow,

If u can let the info slip...do u know when the super-secret guest star will be on Scrubs?
Can't wait for People's Choice Awards!

Okay, so... we were talking a couple of days ago in our weekly film society meeting about guests to bring to our film festival, and your name came up. Everyone thought you were perfect. And since you read all of these posts, I figure I'd give it a try. We'll probably be contacting you soon through more official channels, but if you want, you can check us out at www.txfilmfest.org . It's the largest student-run independent film festival in the nation, and this year is shaping up to be our biggest and best year yet. Think about it, we'd love to have you come down to Texas!

I love how commenting on this blog has turned into something akin to the UN. Sweden? Australia? Israel? Wow. I don't think a blog by say, Jonathan Silverman could pull in the ranks like that (he was the only other "Semitic" sitcom star I could come up with--only calling to mind the need for more affirmitive action in tv land).

Is your story really true? I hope so, 'cos it's freakin' hilarious!!! So, I told my relatives at Thanksgiving about calling Turk's cell, and getting to talk to you. There was silence for a good minute before I started hearing words like "whackjob and geek". I think I even heard my 89 year old grandmother whisper something about me being sad. Oh well, you were worth it....I guess. ;-)

I LOVE BACKGAMMON TOO!!! I'm addicted to the internet backgammon on my computer, it's like crack. I saw you in the People sexiest man of the year addition, and thank God you were there. As much as I love Jude Law, you really, truly should have been on the cover. :)

Sounds like you're quite hilarious when you're drunk! Glad everything's going well for you. It's odd to feel a sort of warmth and familiarity for someone I've never met, but you do inspire a certain amused affection. I'm glad you're happy, Zach!

PS. If you haven't already, you need to go see I <3 Huckabees and listen to JET and/or Franz Ferdinand. I <3 Huckabees made me think of Garden State, actually. In a good way.

Zach,

Ok, ok so you have proven yourself as a talented actor and filmmaker and now you have this backgammon thing going. Whatever. Just don't get too cocky here cause you can NOT beat me at air-hockey. I'm just sayin. We all have a thing and getting super-competitive at air-hockey is mine. So I'm throwing down the gauntlet. You've got a great show and an awesome movie, but if you think you can handle defeat, you just let me know and I'll meet you at an arcade in LA.

KEANE ROCKS!! ok that was a funny story, but it felt so censored! if it were me i dunno if i could keep the criticism contructive lol it would probably be primarily destructive. awwww those lovely lips of yours, as long as they are sealed i wont mind, but while they are seal mine as well pucker them a little... oh wait, let my sillt imagination run away again, you do have enviable lips though. well enjoy the snow, and send or post a picture! take advantage of the break but for goodness sakes stay warm so i can just fix us a little pot of stew instead of a lot ;-) im lazy, ok love yah!!! thanks for the lovely hug i needed it! ~sweet hug and cheek peck with a flirty wink, (that was a long winded closing...) ~tiffany w

Hahah :-P Anyway. I love you. I love Scrubs. I love Garden State. I love.. uh.. skiing? Yes.

Oooh! I read someone else's comment about chicken little being a woman... so.. you should reply to that. Are you doing the voice of a woman or a dude?

Anyway. Keep being awesome :) And I hope you have a kickass time skiing!!!

It took some nerve to call that old, crotchety windbag but she deserved it. It's bad enough that she crapped all over the movie (which rocked me down to my unmentionables)but why did she have to attack you personally?

You should've directed the BiATCH to your super FRESH rating on Rotten Tomatoes, then she'd know what's up.

Zach,

Wow, what a blog! I enjoy the randomness and honesty of it all, so please keep it up... I read all your posts today for the first time, delaying my much anticipated nap, but it was worth it... Garden State is my new favorite movie... I think your movie has helped me discover that I love movies with an apperantly depressing story-line, which changes in the end with either a hope for something better, or the quintessential happy ending... As far as love stories go Garden State's is quirky enough to be my fav. followed by Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind in a close 2nd... Be it ever so cliche, e-mail anytime, and I will write back.. Oh, and if you're ever in the Chi-town area, with nothing to do, then you'll be just like me... :) Keep up the board games... I enjoy Scrabble, Euchre, and Cribbage primarily... I'd spend forever playing tourney's on the MSN gaming zone if given the opportunity... Take care and continue keep it nerrdy (yes, I'm overly caucasian)

Carless in Chicago,
Jon

I hope you were polite to that old lady. Would have been awful had you chewed her out and she had a stroke that night or something.
Backgammon is fun. You see people playing it on the streets all over in Turkey. You should try Cribbage. Though it takes some agility (putting those pegs in the hole can be pretty tricky and demand a lot of coordination), its good for a few moments of fun.

hey zach,

first of all, i love scrubs. my friend is obsessed and has recorded every episode and since i love your blog so much i decided to start watching them over thanksgiving break…baaaaaad idea. so please think productive thoughts for me when you read this (see I have faith that you do in fact read these) because i have a calculus exam tomorrow, a chinese cinema term paper the day after and another paper due thursday. second, i loved garden state...i am planning on buying the dvd when i get back to the U.S. after christmas break. third, thank you for keeping up with this blog…it is hilarious and very much appreciated. i figure since you have been traveling all over the globe recently i would throw in a suggestion for another incredible, beautiful and unique place to visit.....are you ready for it???.....nepal!!! i admit i am very biased because i was born and grew up there but its not every day that you get invited to come to kathmandu by a half tibetan half irish girl so how is that for an original moment?

peace,

Wow tv's in the dashboard. Only in Australia. Could you imagine us having those? We already are in way over our heads with eating, using the cell, listening to the radio, and trying to drive all at the same time. I've actually witnessed many who do all of the aforementioned simultaneously.

As for telling that reviewer that her show could also use improvements... good for you. I find its always better to express yourself under the influence.

Backgammon is awesome!

You know, I hope you don;t think that I'm just using you for your fame and glory in the hopes that you will propogate my word to the rest of society (mougars). I actually am a huge fan of your show and Garden State....it was the last movie I saw, and I saw it when it first opened....nothing's really caught my attention since.

Say, if you ever want some really dope skiing you should come to Vancouver/Whistler.....

See ya (well, not really)

zb, I have been using your blog to escape from mundane workdays and am fascinated by the community you have created here. i ofcourse loved every minute of your movie and hope that it inspires others to write honest screen plays. After getting home from my own drunken debauchery on friday my friends and I sang the GS soundtrack into candle microphones why standing on our couch and driving the neighbors crazy. I thought you would appreciate that.

keep inspiring others and yourself.

The Garden State soundtrack, in addition to being a kick ass cd to listen to while driving the backroads of upstate NY, is also splendid for listening to while you're in labor for 19 hours. I think my baby's first words might just be Frou Frou or "hey ma, caring is creepy".

p.s. i'm waiting for december 10th (Garden State comes out in Englnd)

Posted by: harpall | Nov 29, 2004 10:43:09 AM

Well, you know, not everyone is going to be a fan. I know on this site it seems like everyone is, but an older generation can't relate to the movie like us young'uns. I can just hear them now.. "Damn teenagers, always moping around.." I mean, a lot of my friends thought the ending was depressing. But then, a lot of my friends are stupid.

Hey Zach,

I'm so glad you had a great time in Australia! I've heard amazing things about it--I can't wait to go! The people there sound great too--so authentic and no-bullshit-oriented.

Thanks for your Men at Work subject line! It time-warped me back to the summer when my parents took my brother and I on an 8-week camping trip out west. (Unbelievably, they did this twice!) I think I was 12 and my brother was 9. Our car was a 15 year old Volvo with red wool seats and no air conditioning. (Note to parents: What were you thinking????) Anyway, back then walkmans had just debuted, so we had one of those to listen to. But we only had two cassette tapes other than Fiddler on the Roof, etc. One was Men At Work's Cargo and the other was Duran Duran's Rio. Needless to say, we listened to them incessantly! And to this day I can't get a picture of the great sand dunes out of my head when I hear Men at Work. And the feel of wool on bare sweaty skin. . .

BTW, I loved Fiona Apple's song "Paper bag." It reminded me a bit of Nick Drake's "One of these things first." Dunno why, exactly, but they both have a lyrical, motion-oriented feel that reminds me of a babbling brook. . .

Wishing you the best!

Love and sparkles,

This is the most random/useless comment I've ever posted.. and thus, most likely the one you will read.
1. That was one lucky girl.
2. It's hilarious that you called the woman. I'm glad you were kind enough to be constructive and get to the "root" of her dead fern problem. *thinks she is funny* Anyway, I can definitely see myself doing something of that "nature" (That one really doesn't work as well).
3. Why would she feel the need to make negative, personal comments about you when critiquing your movie? Odd.
4. I'm very pleased Keane made it on your blog. That's some music I can listen to over and over again. Much like the Garden State soundtrack. Thanks for putting great detail into all aspects of your film.
5. "Root."

Zach,
That was an excellent story. Nothing like drunk dialing people you've just seen on the TV. I've done as much, but it was a little less glamorous than your decked-out-fern-having-wishing-it-was-PBS show... in fact it was less of a show and more of an infomercial. I'm still not sure what they were trying to sell me. But Tom Bosley was just so convincing!

Also, you were quite enjoyable on Jimmy Kimmel. Especially that look on your face when you were trying very hard to appear interested in Serena Williams fashion show anecdotes. It was priceless.

Also, that movie you made, with the people, and the stuff, it was really good. I especially enjoyed the Jewish relative bits... it's funny 'cos it's true. Somewhere in my parents' house must lie that pile of ugly garments forced on me by old relatives over the years. Luckily never anything that was patterned after wallpaper though. Eurgh.

Anyway, woo Garden State!
Right back at ya with the suffocating bear hug (and I guess the peace and the love too),

I've said it time and time again, you rock. Good story man. One time, when I was 18, my friends and I wore capes and ran around San Diego pretending to be superheros. Even the cops were on our side.

Oh, and we were sober.

Posted by: Joey Price | Nov 29, 2004 10:56:12 AM

Howdy Zach!

Glad to hear you made it back to us in one piece!

- backgammon rocks! Here's a geeky piece of info about me... we (my sister and I)used to play it all the time with our neighbors! We actually had tournaments! Not much time for that now!

- Keane is awesome. I've been listening to them for awhile now - It's nice having a couple friends in the radio business... I get to hear a lot of stuff before it hits mainstream!

As for the lady reviewing your movie - boo ... she just didn't know what she was watching! As I've said before, I loved the movie, and have told tons of people to go see it. Unfortunately it isn't playing around here anymore - Anyway - if you ever feel like drunk calling me... you go right ahead! We'll have "intelligent" conversation I'm sure! ; )

So - Do you have anything else in the works? I know the press for the movie and Scrubs has probably kept you busy - I did see the preview for Chicken Little and can't wait to see it! - But will you be directing anything else in the near future? Anymore episodes of Scrubs?

Hope you have fun skiing and I'll take a bear hug anyday! Suffocating or not!

Hugs & kisses

hoorah for drunken phone calls! the last one i made was thanksgiving evening, talking to the family back home (first mistake), asnwering my sister's question of how are you with "I'M DRUNK" (second mistake), only to hear her say "you do know that mom and dad are on the phone" (third).
but man, when the wine is free...

so i've just re-discovered why we're always warned not to do the blind date thing. i let a friend fix me up with someone at his work last week, on the criteria that he enjoy live music and the outdoors (if you saw my track record, my type is HIGHLY predictable). what i got in return was a fake music-lover (radio stuff, bleh, sorry if that offends) and someone who surely considers hyde park "the outdoors." the real kicker, he leaned in for the kiss within a solid 20 minutes. when i said no, he played the "your loss more than mine" card. ouch.

glad to hear you're home safe...the stories are endless entertainment.
