Zoom Golly, Golly
Hello All,
Wow. You people are beyond kind. I'm completely shocked by the outpouring of support and love for "Garden State". It's midnight here in LA and I just got home from work, but I had to post something; some kind of response to say that in my wildest daydreams I never imagined so many people would be responding like they are to my first film. It makes me so inspired to write more and do it again. I feel so lucky to have this blog; it feels like I have direct contact with the film's audience every single day. It's a very unique experience for me and I'm so glad I listened to the web guys when they said that people would actually be interested in reading my posts.
Today was the second day of Scrubs. I shot my first scene with Heather Graham. Without giving anything away, it involved me being sopping wet and close to naked. Sort of an odd way to meet someone and get to know them. But that's what makes Scrubs fun, everyday I show up I have no idea what kind of bizarre thing is gonna happen. Tomorrow we're blowing up a car. Now that's a good day job.
Oh yeah, once again: Please, please, please don't put SPOILERS in your comments back to me. I really don't want anyone who's reading this who hasn't seen the film to have any part of it ruined for them. Thanks.
Oh yeah, (2): I'm trying to read all your comments and I'm doing a pretty good job at getting to them all; so all of you (and there's many) that begin your comments with "I know you're not reading this, but..." That's a little like driving alongside a marathon runner and being like, "You're never gonna make it. You look tired. Come back to my house and nap on my satin chaise."
Check out the first installment of "Pat Crafty" in the Making Of GS section on the site.
Sleep well all you people who say nice things and make me feel like I've actually done something meaningful and make me happy to have taken the risk even though I waited on tables and people were mean to me and I had to sometimes do awful things when I worked as a PA on music videos like mop up vomit.

Hi Zach,
I just saw your appearance on Letterman last night - yeah yeah I know you did that last week, but they broadcast it a week later in Denmark, Europe. You did it very well I think, and after this last month reading your blog, I'm really looking forward to seing your movie when it gets overseas... any idea when?

Zach,
I am very excited about the second season of scrubs, hopefully the show can capitalize on the success of the first season. Garden State opens here this friday and I am fairly certain there is a prety big fuss about it. I am rather excited to see it, I hope it is as good as I've heard. Peace out.

Zach,
I think what you've done is really, really amazing. The writing is completely beautiful and rich. The lighting and camera work are very enchanting--almost etherial.
I'm double major (film/writing) at Emerson College in Boston. Our school is full of students that are very pretentious when it comes to their tastes and acceptance of films. This year there were two films that people all agreed on as being worthy of their $10. Eternal Sunshine, and Garden State. Not only have I not met anyone who didn't like it--but everyone I know seems to be obsessing over it.
I've seen it twice and I feel like I'm far behind the devotion of many of my friends.
This work was fanFREAKINGtastic.
And I LOVE the music.
So mucho kudos dude. Seriously.
And thank you so much for your frequent postings despite your busy schedule. Feeling like we have a chance to connect with the filmmaker is rare, at best.
PS. You are wicked hot.

Hello Zach,

I dunno if you've put some mean addictive subtle frames in your trailer for GS, cause i cant stop whatching the damn thing! I've seen the teaser trailer atleast 150 times and that just makes me crazy, doesnt it?
God i'm really looking forward to seeing this movie, although it looks like it won't be coming around sweden until sometime in early 2005 :(

Hee Hee, now did you wear your ever so clever Shower shorts again ;)
Your film has def inspired me to continue writing my screenplay and to continue to run and get the crew's donuts with a smile. One day man one day ;)
So keep up the great work you're doing a fabulous job!
Holla!

I really think everyone should take Waithelp 101 so that they know how to behave in public, (or at least learn basic civility towards another human being). The rude behaviour is an indication of ignorance of the another's circumstance. All in all, what won't kill you will make you stronger, and create great stories.
I am looking forward to the new season of Scrubs, and of course, Garden State! Thanks Zach!!!!

Hi,
First I have to say, that I am from Germany, so that will apologize my bad english.
I just want to say that I haven't seen "Garden State" , because we in Germany have to wait veeeeeeeeeery long for such great movie to come in our cinemas. I'll hope there will be a premier in Europe with the whole team and I hope it will be in Berlin. Will Smith was here two days ago and that was more than a hot party...
But back to Garden State. I watch the Trailer every day 6 times, because I can't get enough of it. A friend of mine (he is also a movie geak) works on german Television and as I show him the Trailer, he was so fascinated, that he show the "Garden State"-Trailer and talks about the film for two hours(The show is NBC GIGA. You can check it out at www.giga.de).
I belive that GS will be a big hit around the world.
SO goodbye and see you at the europe-premiere in berlin :-)

WOw so i saw it again..and this time i paid. Im currently in film school slaving away at the monotnous lessons that never seem to go anywhere and never, and i have seen a lot of films trust me, has a piece moved me as garden state has. its prolly coincidence or just straight out honesty of the script. for the first time in a long time i no longer cared about the plot but for the being of the characters. I must say thanks for the inspiration. I feel like a film fan all over again. and i once again want to make films to move audiences...even if i have to be a PA and be a flesh puppet for years.

Heather Graham, you sopping wet and almost naked, car blowing up... oh, how I'm missing Scrubs. And as for Garden State, even though my sister and I have already seen it, we drop whatever we're doing every time the trailer finds it way onto television to stare. I'm so excited the trailer's getting into circulation and the movie is doing well in limited release because it's one of the best movies I've seen in a very long time. For all the people who haven't been able to see it yet, it's worth the wait, I promise!
Best wishes,
Devon :)

Thank you. That was a beautiful film.
And keeping up with your blog as a direct link to the audience is astounding and impressive. Keeps that sweet feeling left by the movie lingering on and on and on.... Hopefully there's some reciprocation from the rest of us, so you can tap into this blog for an infusion whenever you need it.

Zack,
I just caught a screening of Garden State last night. I thought it was fantastic... until the end. I don't want to give anything away, but I have to ask -- is that the only ending you shot? Please tell me it originally ended differently! I left feeling incredibly frustrated. If you can drop me an email, please let me know!

So, I interned at the White House and thought paying my dues there was tough - kudos for the vomit-mopping! Thanks so much for doing this blog. Me and my roomates are way excited for Garden State and for new Scrubs - Best of luck!

Zach,
While you were writing this post, I was getting out of the late screening of your movie at "the Grove" in hollywood. I have to say I'm pretty impressed. You inadvertantly stole some of my ideas for a script but I'm ain't mad at ya, you actually wrote and got it down on film whereas, I just thought out about it alot. Good choice of the song "Only living boy in New York" that's not a spoiler, is it? Well I'm telling everyone too see the movie including my buds on the east coast, so your welcome. I look forward to adding it to my collection when it comes out on DVD. I wish you good luck on having a profitable box office. The good movies usually get what they deserve.

between getting calls from people i dont know and listening to the very few cds i have, watching the trailer for garden state has been what is keeping me sane. it is, probably the best ive seen this year. i usually get chills from the real movie, but just seing the trailers, i got extremely chillish. like uber chill, chill to the max very cool. but still, no showing in orlando. AHHHH ANOTHER PHONE CALL FROM BOOKSPAN.AHHHHH

Hey Zach,
I know that youre going to read this. (Is that better?) I read an article about you in Back Stage West yesterday, and I really liked what you said about the self-motivated actor. That we are no longer as the whim of agents and casting directors and producers, but have access to an entirely fabulous medium of little digi films. I read it and went "Duh!" So simple, but so true! I'm beginning to question how effective my education has been. Thanks for the thought, and I loved the film. A huge congratulations on such a tremendous success. Not everyone acknowledges what it means to be a human, let alone portray it beautifully in a film. Congrats!

hehe... I Emailed my film professor the other day to see if he's seen or heard of Garden State and he said yes he saw it, and he thought it was incredible....
to be honest he is probably one of the pickiest film critics i know, he only showed us the best of the best in class - and i really think he'll be showing this one to his students some day.
Keep up the good work Zach - and oh yeah.. you're a huge inspiration also - it's so wonderful to know that you put your heart and soul into this project and it's doing so incredibly well.
Much Love!

Just stumbled upon your blog from a post on craigslist (so you're def getting around:). Big congrats on all your success! Scrubs is the one show that my husband and I never miss! And we're so excited to see Garden State this weekend. Was supposed to see it yesterday at a special screening put on by the mag I work for up here but alas my car landed in the shop. Everyone that went can't stop talking about how great it was though. Good luck with this next season of Scrubs, can't wait for the premiere!

Hi Zach,
Saw you on the Late Show and I hope that your movie will play here in Europe too, it seems like a really good movie.
And I'm also very exited to hear that you're shooting another season of Scrubs. I absolutely love that show. There is nothing like watching Scrubs after putting in a looooong shift at the hospital. There's no way you can't be in a good mood after watching a Scrubs episode, even if you've seen it like 10 times earlier.
So thanks for a great show and the very best luck to you on your movie!

Hey Zach,
Congrats on a fantastic $22k per this weekend and best of luck in the coming weeks as more Box Office stuff comes in...yikes!
I'm guessing that you're appreciating how charmed "GS" is in that even a great film doesn't necessarily get the press and audience it merits. You've hit a home run out of the gate so it's difficult to imagine that things could be ANY better than this...so enjoy the hell out of it, right?
Looking at a few others in similar shoes who've gone onto cool careers, 1) Stallone peaked with the amazing "Rocky", 2) Ed Burns created once-in-a-low-budget lifetime magic w/ "McMullen" but hasn't come close to that since (luckily his acting gigs have picked up the slack) 3) Guy Ritchie's future looks good after kicking ass w/ "Lock, Stock..."...in spite of a bad Madonna movie, and 4) Robert Rodriguez took matters into his own hands by creating so many simultaneous sophomore efforts that the critics were too confused to claim he fell. And what a maverick!
So the pressure will be on you if it's not already...I s'pose what you can learn from those before you is to TAKE CHARGE wherever possible and follow your opportunities.
But man, for now at least, keep ENJOYING THE RIDE!
And it's great to be able to communicate with you too, bro!

Man, I've been refreshing your page for an hour or so hoping to be the first to comment on a new post. Then I realized that I'm at work and I should get SOMETHING done if I don't want to get fired. Now that I've checked back I realised I've been beaten by Denmark. Story of my life.
Okay, I might've exaggerated. see if you can guess where.
I just wanted to let you know that I've been a huge fan of yours since Scrubs came out. It has such a refreshing type of humour you don't find anywhere else.
I can't wait till the film comes out in Toronto. I think it's great that you're doing your own thing and not conforming or changing your vision.
All the best
PS If you're ever bored and I highly doubt you will be, checkout http://toike.skule.ca . I write for a humour newspaper for the university of toronto, it can be quite an interesting read.
