Free Gas

Dear Friends of Garden State,

Hello. Or as Borat on Ali G says, "Yegshmesh."

I hope you're all having a magnificent Tuesday, wherever you are on the planet. I got out of work early today so I'm a little chipper. Lately I've been writing to you guys when I'm exhausted from work and barely awake. Couple o' things:

The soundtrack is out. Many of you have been writing to me that it was sold out at stores today. I think everyone (the label, the studio, the stores, myself) underestimated how many of you would be interested in buying the soundtrack. We thought we'd sell a few, but we never imagined it would achieve full Cabbage Patch Kid lunacy. But fear not, they are quickly making more. Please don't tackle old ladies in the record store for them. Especially since old ladies aren't trying to buy the soundtrack and if you're tackling them it's for no apparent reason. They're probably just on their way to the Yanni aisle. Is their a Yanni aisle? If not, there should be; (note to self: build "Yanni aisle" in house.)

Responding personally: Many of you ask me to e-mail you personally.
Please don't think I'm being a dick if I don't. I couldn't possibly e-mail everyone. That's what's so cool about this blog; it enables me to talk to all of you at once. But if I began to write to everyone individually, I'd never have time to wash myself. It's not that I fear that we'll get close, have an affair and then you'll freak out and boil my rabbit on the stove. I don't even have a rabbit, or a pot big enough to boil one in. I do have a stove; but no rabbit and no pot...
irrelevant. Can't do it... rabbit or not.

Gas money: Some of you have asked me to reimburse you for the gas money you spent driving so far to see the film. This I can do. I have made an arrangement with every gas station in the country. (Except the Shell's in Raleigh; those guys bargain hard.) All you have to do is tell them that Zach Braff said you could have free gas to drive to see Garden State. If they look at you like, "What the fuck are you talking about?"
Don't worry, that's just the code. That look is just so other customers won't try and get free gas to drive to see other movies. (The director of "Maria Full of Grace" tried to get a similar deal for his audience, but when he tried to negotiate a bag of chips as well, he pissed them off. ) Once you've gotten the look, you are free to take all the gas you need. Air is also free... again except at the Shell's in Raleigh.

Peace and also love,
ZB

I can't wait to see the movie in Dallas on Friday. I tried to go to the screening when you were here, but I found out only 45 minutes before showtime. I hauled it over there, but was too late and didn't get a pass. I almost cried. Seriously. Come Friday, no more crying! Yeah, buddy!

Oh dear, you never fail to amuse me.<3

I had to go to five stores to find the soundtrack, but it was worth it!

I like the "Special thanks from Zach" section. It made me giggle, and I was by myself, so it may have looked odd, but I was happy.

Thank you for writing wonderful posts in your blog. :)

Hahaha oh, why don't I just say it already? I love you, you crazy person, you.

Yeah that about sums all that up.

So, er, why do we have to put our e-mail to post a comment? Did you really think there wouldn't be that many people commenting and you'd be able to reply to every single one? You're silly.

Zach, my company was relocating me to Raleigh in a month. But....now that you have revealed the true stingy nature of Shell, I will have to rethink the entire move, cancel the U-Haul, notify my boss, look for a new job. Thanks for steering me in the right direction. Please keep me informed of all future hardball tactics of Shell...they must be stopped!

Sup Zach? I've hung out with you up at NW when you lived with Matt E. I was his good friend from high school. Came up for 'Dillo Days a couple times. Do you still keep in touch with him? Got any contact info?

Looking forward to checking out your film. Congrats to you and your career blowin' up. Peace brother, Ryan.

Hello Zach,

It seems that the absurdity of this kind of net communication with hundreds and thousands (millions) of people put spice into your posts (You so funny!). i think it is definitely creeping into my subconscious. While i often do not remember dreams, sometimes for streches of six months and more, one night this past weekend i think i had about six different dreams involving Garden State and woke up to end or interrupt each one...frrrreaky. i think it was because Vancouver was not a Select City last Friday. i am hopeful that the increased GS commercials on the local stations are clues that Van. will be a Select City THIS Friday and the bizzarro dreams will cease.

So big congratulations on the steam that this here project of yours is picking up. It has jumped from 28th to 22nd most popular film in the US, according to the stats of this here website:

Hi Zach, i'm a big fan of yours. I love you on Scrubs and Garden State was awesome. I saw it on friday in maryland. I could honestly tell you that at the end, i walked out of the theatre very happy. Your movie is so uplifting in such a way, so realistic, and random... or at least you present the randomness of life that can be so beautiful. anyway, i loved it. You are doing an excellent job, and i know this sounds weird, but i'm so proud of you. Please continue to impress the world with your talent. i can't wait to buy the DVD of Scrubs and to see it this season. I know this may be too much to ask, but i'm applying to college this year, and i was wondering if you could sort of talk about what you studied in film and acting at Northwestern University. Anyway, you're my hero. and i plan to see your movie again and encourage my other friends to see it. Thank you for everything you've done! You're awesome!

hahaha! Your blogs never cease to amuse me!

I tried to buy the soundtrack today, but I couldn't get a hold of it! I went to three different stores! I'm pissed about that...

Boiling rabbits is nothing to joke about. As a rabbit owner, I feel I must stand up for the civil rights of rabbits everywhere.

Wohooo! Free gas!

I took the subway so I don't need the gas money.

I could have predicted that the soundtrack would explode. Why isn't it on iTunes???

I used to do the gas-n-go until I got arrested for the third time.

Hi Zach,
I have to say I check your website every so often and read the blogs but I had never written a comment, so I decided to write one today... I saw a special screening of Garden State and absolutely loved it. I want to see it again and im trying to get some friends to come. You and Natalie seemed to have a lot of chemistry. It looked very real ;) Congrats on the success of the film, and I wish you luck in your future projects.
P.S. For all your Ali G lovers, like myself (especially the Borat character), I think you will get a kick out of this site. It has sound bites of all his hilarious phrases! check it out:

Zach-

First things first.

THANK GOD IT'S FINALLY COMING TO THE WATERFRONT IN PITTSBURGH!!! I still have to wait til the 20th, but whatever, it works. So about that free gas deal, what about free taxi fare? Think you can work something out there?

Second thing, I would be a newbie poster to this entire blogging bonanza; however, I would like to say a HUGE CONGRATS for all the success of the movie, not that I ever doubted that it would happen.

Third thing, absolutely LOVE SCRUBS. I think everyone on the show is great, every last damn one of youse working on the show. As an animation student who someday wants to be a director of photography, watching that show and I'm sure watching the movie will give me so much inspiration to work off of. Hell, I even named two of my animated characters Terkk(because he's an alien) and J.D. because I'm a horribly uncreative artist and well, I was watching my d/led episodes of Scrubs at the time(Hopefully that doesn't piss you off, it is wrong to d/l TV Shows if you pay your cable bill???). Speaking of which, how much longer will we all have to wait before we see some Complete Season DVDs??? The best I've managed to get a hold of are the Emmy Nomination DVDs that float around on EBay.

A quick aside, does anyone here know the song in the trailer after Such Great Heights??? I'm hoping some angel could just send me the answer. Ok, make it a long aside because I know absolutely nothing about brevity, but I have always loved that most of the music in Scrubs is not in the mainstream and thus gets pushed through the mainstream. I LOVE constantly finding great new artists through the show and now this movie. Great soundtrack! You know, it'd be great if iTunes would get you to add your playlist, I'd be interested to see what else would be there...

Have all the dates you will be doing talk shows been posted anywhere??? It seems that I've missed a couple. The only related interview I've seen is Natalie's on the Daily Show because I watch that show almost religiously. Anyone else here feel like helping a poor lost soul out???

And to wrap up,(finally, I know, I know) CONGRATS AGAIN ON ALL THE SUCCESS YOU'VE BEEN HAVING. I can't wait to see your movie and see what else you write here...the posts are hilarious. Even if you can't respond and I'll never get to boil the rabbit in the pot that never will exist now...

Posted by: Long Hong | Aug 10, 2004 6:59:02 PM

I guess I should consider myself lucky -- the closest theatre playing Garden State is about 20 minutes away!

Har-har!

Anywho, I can't believe the "ZB" has a blog. By the way, if you do read this Mr. B, you are such a dick it's not even funny.

Because, as we all know, only dicks reach out to their fans. ;]

Ironic point of the day: Still haven't seen the film, but have been waiting for a LONG time -- just ask my pals. Come Friday, my time.

YEAHH OBNOXIOUS TEXT YEAHH

This was probably your funniest posting yet man, your hilarious.

Btw, due to your reccomendations and those of others, I will be purchasing Da Ali G Show season 1, especially after seeing that Borat guy on Conan (funniest thing ever, did you happen to catch it? I don't know why I'm asking you a question, as you wouldn't respond, oh well, I'm rambling now).

I picked up the soundtrack today, great, but I already knew that.

Posted by: Akaash | Aug 10, 2004 7:00:07 PM

Man the soundtrack is HARD to find! Not sold out, just didn't get it. The Best Buy, Barnes, C.City didn't have it. I went to FYE and they had no idea what I was talking about. 7 hours later I went back and asked again. They had 3 in the box, still not out. He give it to me. Finally.
With a 3 hour drive home tomorrow, I need this! Listen to some of it already and now I am in love with Zero 7

Great soundtrack (so far)

Great movie - can't wait for that DVD to come out with the extras. And if I find in a penny in there -- I'm taking you down.

Hey Zach,

I had no idea about yuor movie but my friend made me go yesterday (totally honest) because I'm visting her in California and I loved it...

Your amazingly talented in acting and directing and will be looking forword to future films. I will have to recommend it to my friends that did not have the ability to see it in theatres (as one of my best friends in my home city in Indiana) so they can buy it or hopefully rent it some day :). Thanks agian.

Zach,
I bought the soundtrack today, great stuff. I can't wait to see the movie, not out yet here in RI, but I guess i'll have to wait till the 20th like everyone else here in RI. Well good luck with the future-

So I gave that old man with the walker rug burns for nothing, huh? Sold out everywhere within half a tank of gas. But they claim there's more on the way. I hope I can trust the clerk-- he had shifty eyes.

The film's gorgeous.

Posted by: Layla | Aug 10, 2004 7:14:34 PM

Manhattan Murder Mystery was on the other morning. You look so young in there. You racked up some points there, I am amidst a sea of avid Woody Allen fans who are willing to back and promote Garden State just because of your mere association with the man. So you should probably give credit where credit is due.

Posted by: andi | Aug 10, 2004 7:16:01 PM

Caught the Dallas premire of the movie at the Magnolia last month, and was blown away.

Went to New York on vacation and saw it 4 times when I was there.

I just think its almost as close to perfect that you can get for a movie like that. Doesnt rely on sex, tits, special fx, explosions, or gimmicks to entertain. Just good camera work, music, and conversations.

I think its a movie I will never get tired of watching, and cannot wait for it to open in Dallas.

Great Work

Posted by: wjans | Aug 10, 2004 7:16:54 PM

You amuse me endlessly.

That's a command, by the way, not a compliment.

Oh, Friday cannot come here fast enough in Dallas. Do something, Zach. Work your masculine wiles on the gods to speed things up, like you've done with the gas stations.

Posted by: Katie | Aug 10, 2004 7:18:04 PM

Zachhh. I'll be honest. I've never once watched Scrubs so I didn't hear about you until I saw the preview for Gardenstate like two million months ago.. and ever since that night, I've been awaiting your movie's beautiful apperance sooo impatiently. I'm going crazy, I cannot wait to see it. It comes out on August 13th here in Florida. I'd get so excited when I'd go see other movies hoping that Gardenstate would be one of the previews, because yeah, i can watch it online but oh my god its amazing on the big screen with "let go" playing. Gets me all teary eyeddd. Anyway, just wanted to say you've made a new fan and you have an absolutely beautiful vision. Nice choices on the soundtrack too. You're just awesome. :)
take care. <3

here's a question for ya Zach! or anyone else who might know...

the restuarant that Andrew works at in the beginning of Garden State, said to be in LA - was that actually filmed at a thai restaurant in Williamsburg? Called "Sea"? If not, it sure looks like the same restaurant. It's one of my favorite yummy places in brooklyn.
Just an interesting thing I noticed, seeing as I had eaten there a couple nights before I saw the movie, which, by the way, is excellent.
zach, you are some kind of wonderful. and a nice jewish boy with a dog to boot. what kind of dog do you have?
kim

Posted by: kim | Aug 10, 2004 7:28:57 PM

yes on that note. Went to 3, count 'em THREE, shops in NYC today and no copies were available! You are so popular mister! But I will not rest until I have it in my hands! I have even chosen NOT to download the songs from limewire, but to actually pay for the CD, which is not something I normally do, in order to support your excellent film.

Posted by: Katie | Aug 10, 2004 7:32:07 PM

i got to the gas station, got the look, got free gas AND free beef jerky. apparently the attendant was a big fan of yours...-r.f.

Posted by: rebecca | Aug 10, 2004 7:36:49 PM

There's a sign at my Shell that says "Free Air and Water Available Inside." I still can't decide if they're being ironic.

By the way, this is my first time posting on your blog. I saw the movie twice in 22 hours, to the tune of 19 buckaroos...damn those snobby indie movie houses. It was well worth it, though, to watch the most shiningly beautiful film that I have ever seen. As an aspiring writer, I'm often told to "write the story I've always wanted to hear"...only now, I don't have to. Thank you so much.

P.S. Very cool that you linked the LJ community on here. You are the coolest celebrity ever for doing so. And for keeping a blog!

i was planning to get the cd today, but because of my excitement, i left my wallet. i was pretty bummed. but when i got home today, my aunt got the cd for me. she got one for herself as well. we've been listenning to it since 5:30. life is good. loved the movie. even after seeing it 5 times. you rock man!

Do you think Jersey Films...or any film company would accept an idea that i had for a movie? Im only 15...but full of ideas. You inspired me because i had always thought it would be awesome to direct (or co direct), act, and write the script of a movie that i would be in. Amazingly you have done it. I could tell you my idea and you could pass it to whomever made your movie Garden State...hehe. I dont feel like putting my idea here because i dont want anyone taking it. So if you would like to know what it is...feel free to email me. (even though u said you rele cant email people)

Its amazing what can happen when you make a movie that isnt mainstream. I rented a movie called "The Dreamers", which is great by the way, and looked at the special features section. Your teaser trailer was up there so i decided to check it out. It took be by suprise. Instantly i wanted to see this movie. The music is amazing and refreshing. Also, i think people should buy the soundtrack online and save them the trouble of wasting all that free gas you are giving away.... :P

Buyakesha as Ali G. would say (did I spell that right?)...I Amazon.com-ed my Garden State soundtrack so I should be getting it in a few days. I figured it would be sold out...and I was looking for a shortcut to not hunting it down :-) Loved the movie and am looking forward to a DVD chock full of extras.

I would ask for gas money too, since we had to go all the way to San Francisco to see the movie, but I wasn't the one driving. LOL@ME

But of course the movie was worth the drive (me and my friends were rocking out to some Britney Spears on the way), and the near-4 month wait. O_O Definitely going to see it again, and I'm buying the soundtrack fo'sho. Even though I downloaded a lot of it already, but piracy is bad! Jesus frowns upon it D:

Okay, that's it :D

Posted by: Veronica | Aug 10, 2004 7:45:36 PM

Man, I am almost gullible enough to believe you on the gas thing. Your post was a definite day-brightener. I now want an aisle in my own home just for Yanni to sit in. Maybe we can trade custody, you know, like you get him for your own Yanni aisle every other weekend.

Love the soundtrack. You have a pretty nice taste in music! The "oh, inverted world" album was pretty much the soundtrack to my boyfriend and I's relationship when we first started dating. So needless to say, it hit a sweet spot when i heard those two Shins songs in your movie. You should check out the Dntel's "life is full of possibilities" LP if you haven't heard it yet. I've been listening to it a lot lately. It's Jimmy Tamborello's (from the postal service) project, but they're a lot less pop/more ambient than the postal service. Anyhow, i'm gonna go eat. Keep kicking ass. -m

Thank you for making this movie; it was beautiful, touching, sweet and wonderful. Everything was perfect and made sense in some weird, i can't really relate to exactly what these characters are going through, but i totally get it and relate and it touched me so much. Congratulations and thank you.

I picked up the soundtrack today as well...I finally have a reason to like Best Buy, hah. Great music all around, I've loved the Shins for awhile, it's great they are getting some attention with this!

Hope your work day goes well, Zach. <3

Posted by: LaurenNCSU | Aug 10, 2004 8:01:12 PM

Yes--Glenn Close is not someone anyone should aspire to be!

After a looooong day (11 1/2 hours) hostessing at a snotty seafood restaurant (though I myself, I hope, am not!), and coming home and reading your hilarious post! I've recommended your movie to everyone at work, all my friends and family, my pets, people on the street, bus drivers, garbage men, plumbers, you get the drift ;) I figure everyone can benefit from this movie!! I hope to see it again before I leave for vacation (I leave for Maine on Saturday for a week!! Can't wait...). There seems to be things in that movie that you might miss the first time around. Plus, it just amazes me to no end that this was all you...it was your baby and that it just awe insprinng. I know I sound like a broken record, but as a struggling actress, it is truly something I aspire to...and as a fellow Stagedoor camper, I feel that you are the best role model out there.

I'll have to see Ali G, but I am obsessed with the show on before it, "Entourage". Such an awesome show...

Have a great night/day/mid-afternoon!
Carly

something to brag about on the set. ;)

I agree with Felis. I have this funny sense of pride for Zach. It's a split between my mommy side and my 20-something side. As long as you do what makes your soul happy and it doesn't hurt anyone, more power to you.

I can provide a rabbit and a pot if you desperately need one...but I commiserate with you and do not request that you email me personally. I've never commented on here before--so let's get the basics out of the way. I think you're an AMAZING actor, and I absolutely love Scrubs. The show's incorporated itself into how I talk and no one really understands me that hasn't watched the show anymore =P Garden State looks fantabulous, but I don't think it's coming out near me. Rather than drive to the nearest showing and ask you to reimburse me, however, would it be okay if I just pirate-download it and mail you my ticket price? Heee...I think my friend left a comment about this already...

That said, they sell air now. It's air in little plastic bags that they sell as packaging material...

Hey Zach-o (I created this very clever name by just adding an o to the end of your name, it thought i would share that with you). So now i am down to counting the minutes to see your movie this friday, school starting this thursday makes going to the movie more difficult but indeed it is well worth it. And now with this free gas thing i can definetly make it (although i am not yet 16 very close but whatever so the gas thing will not help me), i plan on using this gas code with my friends to hitch a ride. Whatever it takes to get there will be done, unless poor fluffy the dog is dying, i actually do not have a dog so this problem is probably out of question. I really admire what you have done to become what you have and hope that you keep doing this for many years to come, who knows maybe one day we can work together when i go into film.

Huge Fan,
Danny B.

BOO YAW, I GOT FREE GAS.

The gas station attended said that he read that here so he thought that it was true. HAHAHA 32 bucks my way. But then I bought popcorn and a soda… Awesome movie can’t wait for the new season of Scrubs.

Wow...I think this idea is so awesome. I am an aspiring director/writer so your success is very empowering to me. I hope that your success will continue b/c by your blog it is obvious you're a nice person. Also, I live in Dallas, Texas so i am very familiar with the heat. I feel your pain at the airport (I am in a marching band that practiced during the summer all day long so my sympathy is completely sincere). Just remember, you're hope for us all.

Just had to comment to congratulate you on how well the movie's doing. I've seen it twice, and was contemplating a third drive up to Maplewood when! Lo and behold I see that it's opening in Bernardsville this weekend. Long story short, I almost died of happiness. (I obviously survived, unless I'm communicating from the beyond right now. Which would be weird.)

Oh, and don't worry about the whole rabbit thing. I think people are more into boiling hampsters these days.

Posted by: Jenni | Aug 10, 2004 8:23:15 PM

Zach, the soundtrack's lovely. I already own the Coldplay and The Shins CDs, but I ended up buying this anyway. I bought the only copy at a local record store, after not finding any at Best Buy (I'm starting to hate that store). Anyway, I love your picks, especially now that I can listen to the CD!

The movie's coming near me this weekend and I think I'm finally going to go on Sunday to check it out. I'm really excited for it!

Posted by: Radhika | Aug 10, 2004 8:23:16 PM

Isn't that the greatest feeling getting off work early or taking a two hour nap while the boss is somewhere else(don't tell me I'm the only one here that does that). Anyway, maybe that's just me. I met some of the coolest people when I bought the soundtrack.

I crack up everytime I read this site. I got to see Ali G. It was the one with where he takes cop classes

Posted by: Jimmy Kustes | Aug 10, 2004 8:25:17 PM

Zach,

I would never *dream* of boiling your rabbit. I'd at /least/ want it to be something interesting like a guinea pig, or maybe a ferret. Or a kinkajou. People keep pet kinkajous, don't they? And if they do, do they have to get them fixed? Is there anyone out there who does kinkajouectomies? Someone should ask Bob Barker. I bet he'd know.

You had absolutely no right to make a movie that would make me cry at the end. People who would boil innocent kinkajous have no business sniffing all the way home, particularly on major highways in D.C. I could have killed some innocent old lady on her way back from buying a Yanni CD, and how would you feel then? Bad, that's how.

This makes little difference now, of course, because I plan on seeing GS about a gajillion (give or take) more times, until I can recite it verbatim for all my friends who won't have seen it and will think I'm even stranger than they did before. But the joke's on them, because, um. They're big stupid-heads for not seeing GS. Yeah! Stupid friends. Haha.

I'll be sure to stop off in Raleigh on my way to school next week and give those Shell guys a piece of my mind.

Congratulations, and thank you. :>

Zack!!!!!!

You rock! My sister just asked what I'm doing on the computer. So I was like, "Oh, I'm writing a comment on Zach Braff's blog" and she's like "You know he doesn't actually post on it, right?" Well, after some convincing she now believes me and wants to know why I didn't tell her about this site sooner. So my sister says hi and thank you for being so amazing. And as for all those people who expect you to write back to them personally, they should know that we're lucky you keep a blog unlike so many other stars. But anyway, good luck with everything and I wish you all the best. Peace and love forever.

Can we also get reimbursed for public transporation?

It came to my town last week (Montclair, New Jersey) and I got to see it on a Sunday evening (again!) with a sold-out, enthusiastic crowd. The buzz was positive as we exited. Congratulations!

Hey Zach,

Wow, I'll tell you I've never been so freakin nervous in my life cause I don't get to meet a lot of "the big stars" that often, but I happen to be from Maplewood, go to Columbia and was at the premiere a few thursdays ago. Hearing a rumor at the end of the school year from a friend of a friend who has a crush on this guy who's in my class(jk) said that the premiere might be at maplewood, I told my friend and we kept it in the back of our minds. Luckily I was there that night learking around I heard the premiere was that so I moseyed on over and got your autograph and a picture with you. Which was awesome for me. I really look up to you though. As an actor, writer and filmmaker cause these are three of the things I'm really into(mostly the last two)I take the tv prod. classes and I just came back from a two week film camp. I'm 16 and I'm writing write now which is the best time to do it, so I thank you for being such an inspiration to me because I need it from wherever I can grab it. So look out for my name cause I might want you in my movie one day. Can't wait to see Scrubs!
P.S.-Thanks for trying to get us free gas, how generous. 99 RED BALLONS!!!

Aw you're so cute i just wanna squish you!!

::ahem:: ...uhh...i loved the movie. You're a great inspiration to this here fellow New Jeresian and aspiring film maker. I'm going to see your movie again thursday. Bringing the family this time. Yeah my mom thinks you're 'so cute' and wants me to marry you. Heh. Anyway, can't wait till Scrubs is back on. See you thursday Zach!

Posted by: Matilda Robinson | Aug 10, 2004 8:40:45 PM

Zach, you and your film are simply incredible. I can't wait to see it again!! I saw the film when I went to California last week, but when will it be in Austin?? I wanted to see it again, but there's no where for me to go! Thanks!

Posted by: Rachel | Aug 10, 2004 8:42:09 PM

Thank god it's the middle of August, and not close to the holidays.
I can just see the parents of Garden State fans leaping over eachother, eyes bulging out of their skulls, extending their claws... the works.
Or wait, is that already happening?

-=Zach=-

Finally its out!!!! I have been waiting for too long. Unfortunatly I have no way to go get it whatsoever. At least until tomorrow and i pray that its not sold out. If that is the case you will probably being reading some story in the paper saying blonde hair girl at only age 15 dies in a circut city. Yes that would be me. Hopefully that will not be the case. Really though I deserve this. Now because I am only 15 and dont have many responsibilities I spend any money I get fast. But I have kept myself to have at least 15 dollars at all times. Yes cd's are cheap but I might not have money for it right then. But yeah, I can't believe people asking for gas money. That is hilarious. I would never ask you to reimburse you for my gas money, but I would ask you to give me money for gas to go see it for the sixth time. Not that i really would, but if to ask you any questions whatsoever about gas money and you giving me any...it would be for that reason. :)

The internet has become so pointess and boring. But now I have something to look forward to after checking my e-mail. Please don't ever stop doing this blog. I mean i won't hate you if you do, i know your schedule must be unbelievably busy. I know many people post on here but I hope you know whenever Sam G. posts...its always the same one. It would be cool if yuo remembered me. Because then you would know that I think you rock and you are just so awesome.

Holler ZB, CB here..The movie was stupendous-I'd like to see that word put in a review..Anyway, it was totally worth the 1.5 hour drive where I came close to getting into some pretty severe car accidents, but we got there 5 minutes before it started and when it comes down to it, that's all that really matters right? Which is why I'm doing it again tomorrow, because it's my birthday and I'm gonna milk it for all it's worth (which is a lot)..feel free to wish me a happy bday in your next blog ;) Anyway, the movie is genious as well as Scrubs, could not be more excited for the season premiere. You're living my dream, buddy. Thank you for all your hard work, it is the perfect escape.

XOXO-Cori

I'm curious.... Since you mentioned the e-mail thing, I'm wondering if you have an instant messenger screen name. Of course I'm not asking you to tell us what it is -- you'd get flooded with messages from everyone and their mothers. I'm just curious whether you actually have a screen name or not.... Pointless information, perhaps, but interesting nonetheless. :)

Also, what websites do you like to visit? Do you have any favorites that you visit every day?

No complaints here. The movie was great and worth the drive and the matinee price as well.

I can't wait to see this movie and I have a feeling I'll be picking up a copy of the soundtrack sooner or later.

ZACH ATTACK -

Just saw GS in CHICAGO Piper's Alley (by Second City)last night. 9:30 show on a Monday night and the packed crowd was INTO it. Some details w/out spoiling...

BIG LAUGHS: chest scene, knight scene, first sight of jelly scene

SNIFFLES: airport, fireplace

UNCOMFORTABLE SHIFTING: peekaboo scene

MY FAVS: snot metaphor, father/son office encounter, and the tear collection (the latter reminded me of this Johnny Depp unknown that I love called "CRYBABY," that you've probably never seen.

BIGGEST SURPRISE: Seeing the comically-loveable -dweeb-dreamer of SCRUBS transform into the numb-nihilistic-turned-exhuberant-existentialist of GARDEN STATE. Bravo.

Boil your Ex's rabbit once, and all of the sudden your labeled for life....

But regardless, good post, i hope you'll be able to keep the posting-action going.

Just wanted to get everyone to hear this one song by The Shins:

Kissing The Lipless

With that said, i guess we'll have to go our seperate ways. No, no, dont say a word. We both knew what this was. Maybe in another lifetime....

It seems as though I broke my promise. Last week, when a nameless movie came out, I promised I would not see it. It sounded disappointing. And yet, over the weekend I was forced to see it. I took my aunt out to lunch for her birthday and I asked her what movie she wanted to see. She said the movie I do not speak of and I didn't want to complain so I put up with it. And now I'm kicking my own ass for doing that. God, that movie was terrible. I'm waiting to see your movie to make up for it. It opens this Friday in little ol' Dallas, Texas. Can't wait to see it, and it will actually qualify as going to see a REAL movie.

Hope you're doing well, Zach. Your posts make me laugh my ass off. I read them at work and I always get strange looks from my fellow co-workers. I always give them a heads up on your movie, though. :)

Hi,

Great entry--super funny! Yes, I went to 4 stores today before getting the sound track--I was getting a little panicked when I couldn't find it. The music is as awesome as I remembered. It's tracked chronilogically to how it's used in the film, right? I've never noticed a sound track doing that before and loved it.

Also enjoyed your thank you's. Maybe Manny can do some stunt work on Scrubs.

All the best,
Jenny

i have a rabbit, a fat one. Like literally shes obese. Holy crap i thought i was the only one that knew about Ali G., oh my god i cant stop laughing at his khasistan character, he went on Conan o Brien, but i knew him before that and when he pretended to be jamaican. He had this one episode online that had him at a tree protest, and they wouldnt let him stay and he said "oh is it because i is black" and this woman from the protest group was like "get away you wanka!". oh god i made my dad...or day either one is fine. oh how random i is. i saw your movie and i enjoyed it, very eclectic, i dont know if i said that before but ill say it again. Keep it up, keep making movies so they will keep getting better and better, and if you see frou frou tell her (despite her funny name) that her music is amazing.

Hi Zach,

On August 13th I will be driving to Dallas to see Garden State...And this is not due to a dearth of fun activities in town. One of my old high school friends's band is performing in a seedy, down-town Denton pub-- where he will be urinated on in concert. But I will gladly miss public urination to see Garden State because it looks awesome.

p.s. Zach Braff, I want to have like a million of your babies. I'm only like 72% joking.

*stops laughing long enough to type*

That just totally made my day....and it's been a rough one.

I got the soundtrack! My Circuit City only had two copies left, so I snatched mine up and carried it possessively to the check out. And I just finished listening to it. Great job!

I feel kind of mellow....but not down. Which is different....and nice. It's in the top deck of my CD player.

I wouldn't ask you to email me personally....I'm sure you have much better things to do. Besides, if you did, I'd freak out and probably go into shock....not a good thing.

I seriously want to try and get free gas....but I might be arrested. Could you post bail? Just kidding....

Have a great rest of the week!

We finally saw GS tonight at the ArcLight. We've been out of town and busy, and we weren't about to settle and see it at any other theater. You know what I'm talking 'bout. We enjoyed it muchly, and I thought I'd relay the aftermath. We had heard various reports about the soundtrack being/not being released yet. My wife asked me about it again, and I explained the quandry of sync and master rights vs. mechanical rights to the songs, and that you guys would have to pay more to get the rights to release the soundtrack. She then asked if we could take all of the money out of our savings to help make sure you procure those rights. That would indeed be the most expensive soundtrack she ever bought. I hope she was kidding, but even if she wasn't, looks like you got those rights without our life savings. Thanks for doing that.

I saw Garden State yesterday. Brilliant. You're such an honest writer. I think the reason I loved it so much is because I live in a place just like that, well not JUST like that, and I know people like Large and Sam. I call them friends.

Posted by: Cleopatra | Aug 10, 2004 9:48:17 PM

whoa, you are hilarious. ok, kudos with all the sales of the soundtrack. i managed to find one in a vintage record store. that was definitely all luck. i'll keep it short so you have time to read your hundreds of other fan mail. have a fabulous day!

Zach-
quite awhile ago my post never made it to your site and unfortunately I was unable to say thank you for such a tremendous movie that has become a part of my life. It's simply beautiful. I saw it 2 months ago about in NYC at Rockafeller Center and was so moved. I had lost my grandfather 2 days before that and more than anything I needed someone, something to just help me through it all. And your movie did just that. I cried in my friend's arms during the credits and as I tried to approach you while you were waiting to leave and get in your big black car I believe your grand parents or close friends came over and I felt sooo bad imposing on that so I smiled and kept walking by.
Thank you so much for putting a movie out there that really stress the need to live; to feel alive. To constantly indulge one's self in everything that surrounds them even if that is the pure bliss of nothingness. To feel everything, to be driven by passion. Your film speaks beauty on so many levels.
sincerely a fan
Katie

p.s. music you need to check out; it'll make you swoon.

trust me, your heart will be soaring.

H-E-DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS-O! Sorry, I thought that'd be more amusing...hmm... I saw you on David Letterman (my mom sent in an ad like that to Jay Leno). I tried to watch you on the Today Show, but it was 7 in the morning so I just listened with my eyes closed. I keep trying to watch the Ali G show but I tend to fall asleep after Entourage. Yeah...I'm gonna go back to Conan (man that guy loves Walker, Texas Ranger). Yeah...so...bye.

I love the new 'original moments' on the website. Also, I love the swimming pool clip. It was one of my favorite scenes from the movie.I watched it at work and started laughing out loud. Yeah I got stares, but it was worth it. How can I get one of those snowglobes? I collect them.

Any thoughts about the DVD yet? Additional Scenes or Commentary? Release Date?

Posted by: Lea | Aug 10, 2004 9:58:39 PM

Dear Zach,

I drove to Eatontown today to see your movie only to find out--no more than six but no less than two minutes ago--that it would be openning in Toms River in two days!

I don't care about that at all because it was amazing and absolutely worth anytime I spent driving. This just makes it easier for me to see it again.

Get ready because I've made up a song about how much i liked it.

I like Garden State
so very much
I like it like I like my toothbrush

Without either I wouldn't be able to smile.
My teeth would be grimy
for a while.

sincerely,

Well who would have guessed living near Georgetown would pay off for once? Let's hear it for school towns getting limited release flicks in. As for the movie itself, two words: Great goggily-moogily (I think that's 2 words). That's the best flick I've seen all year and I saw The Prince and Me (sometimes there is no power greater than the girlfriend). Mr. Braff I say bravo to you and keep up the tremendous work.

P.S. I did have a rabbit once ... his name was Crunchy... I loved him dearly.

I went and saw Garden State yesterday--I had to drive an hour away to see it, but it was well worth it. I really want to buy the soundtrack, but I love in a small town in New Jersey that doesn't sell it any where. Is there any way to contact you about receiving a signed screenshot or movie poster?

Posted by: Justin | Aug 10, 2004 10:07:23 PM

Best damned movie I have ever seen, no exaggeration. I feel lucky that I live in a city that it was showing. I've been looking for something that was more real and had some actual emotional value. I can't say enough... I loved it. If anybody reads this and hasn't seen it yet, leave and go see it. Don't even put on pants, there's no time. Shoes? Of course, you can't go outside without shoes, that's crazy. Just can't get over how much this meant to me personally.

Garden State made me remember what it feel like to be alive.

Hey Zach

I know you have hundreds of comments and such so if you even get the chance to read this I have no idea but I felt as if I really had to leave a comment just commending you and thanking you for the incredible film of Garden State - wow oh wow it was simply the best film I've ever seen - for the longest time I thought nothing could ever live up to Casablanca but seeing this film just completely blew me out of the water! I first heard about Garden State from a friend of mine about three months ago when he sent me the link to a 30 second teaser - there was no dialogue, just 'Let Go" and some scenes from the movie - from that moment on I have been addicted to all of the trailers and watching them several times a day - a bit psycotic perhaps, but well worth it in my opinion. I had extremely high expectations for the movie and can thankfully and gladly say not only were they met, but far exceeded. I completely forgot I was in a movie theatre watching Garden State - I was just there - the brilliant portryal of all the characters and all the small sutililties thay you revisted through out the film were just incredible.

Its so great to hear from a fresh and talanted voice among all the trash that Hollywood seems so content onshoving in our faces - Garden State was simply brilliant and I could never thank you enough for sharing this story with us all. Best of luck in the future Zach and if you have the ideas keep them coming!!!

Peace love and faith man -

ZB-

Saw the film at AMC 25 in Times Square on Sunday. I had high expectations, and it turns out that perhaps I set them too low.

I vicariously felt Large's highs and lows throughout the movie. If a 2 hour film can make you feel (I mean really FEEL) both happy and sad, then its pretty damn good in my opinion.

From what I witnessed, I wasn't the only one who felt this way. A few people gave the film a standing ovation and about half the theatre hung around for the credits. I haven't seen many films in NYC so this same scene may have also been repeated in the neighboring theaters playing 'Harold & Kumar' and 'I, Robot', but for some reason I highly doubt it.

--- This is where I'd offer you kudos, but I'm currently waging a one man campaign to temporarily suspend the terms 'kudos' and 'genius' from everyday misuse. ---

Rock on.

Whenever I have enough money I plan to go out and get the soundtrack to your movie. The music on the soundtrack is very soothing. I'll be sure to tell the gas man that you said my family and I could have free gas. ;-)

He might think I was trying to rip him off though, but its worth a shot.

Keep up the good work!!!

Brilliant movie. I saw it at the Nantucket Film Festival and was about 5 feet away from you when you talked and said the funny comment about no cell phones because you "die a little inside."
Anyway, I considered approaching you and doing the Wayne's World "We're not worthy!" with my friend... but that would have been creepy... so I resisted... and just walked away.

There wasn't much of a point to that story...

Nonetheless it was a memorable event and I connected with that film like I never have before.

I'm a budding young film-maker and Garden State is the embodiment of what I want my movies to be like.

Just thought you should know...

Dear Zach Braff,

Although this is something you have heard from many a person, you are a very cool guy (and funny, as well. John C. McGinley has nothing on you). I am sorry that I have nothing original to offer, but thanks for being an inspiration to all.
Although I am a faithful Scrub, I have yet to see Garden State. I have been waiting quite impatiently ever since I first saw the trailer several months ago, but the opening date here in Orlando is not until the 20th. To make matters worse, I leave for college (Davidson) the 18th, thus jeopardizing my chances of seeing it as soon as possible. The horror. Nevertheless, the forces of good will prevail over these obstacles of evil and eventually I will see Garden State. Thanks once again.

Hear me now.

I attempted this free gas offer today, and I'm sorry to report the result was quite frightening. I drove to the gas station, sure it would work, and exited my car. Wearing my "I Heart Zach Braff" T-shirt, I approached a worker. I winked at him (I know, you didn't suggest that) and said "Hey cutie, Zach Braff sent me." This very much enraged the man, because I happen to also be a man. He chased me away from the gas station. I had to walk 40 miles home. So, noty so much fun. But the film was great!

Anyway, I now realize this story was competely pointless, and you'll now always have an image of Marty "the hairy gay man" Poole. While I am very hairy, I'm not gay. So anyway... what was I saying?

Posted by: Marty | Aug 10, 2004 10:29:37 PM

Oh man tell me about those gas stations in Raleigh. Crazy ass bunch of people, right there.

Posted by: Allyson | Aug 10, 2004 10:29:53 PM

The movie is out in Atlanta on Friday.. I totally missed the advance screening because they send out those emails in the middle of the night, the ones you have to be one of the first 50 to reply to to get invited, and silly me being asleep in the middle of the night didn't reply in time. ANYWAY I'm really excited... and watch out for me because I'm totally about to win that sitcom contest on Bravo. For sure.

Ooh, and here, out of the mists of history, the legendary esquilax, a horse with the head of a rabbit and the body of a rabbit.

So, I grew up in Orlando, Florida, and have not met a single person from there since I moved away 12 years ago. Now, suddenly, they're all coming out of the so-called woodwork here on your blog. Gives me a little hope for the place, after all. 'Sup, Orlando people?

Oh, yeah - hi, Zach! I posted a couple of days ago on another thread, but for what it's worth, yay, Garden State, again... You rock my world.

PS -- Perhaps think about asking Fox to set up a non-flash option for your website? My computer at home goes bananas when I go to the site - takes forever to auto-load the trailer, and locks up Real Player so I can't listen to anything else, even if I turn off the audio on your site (not that anyone would want to do that, good god!). Just a tiny thought...

Posted by: Hillary | Aug 10, 2004 10:38:07 PM

Garden State comes out August 13 in Michigan! I'm really excited. I've been spreading the word and telling everyone how great it is. Too many deprived people have never heard of it. I felt a bit like a Jehovah's Witness (not that they aren't wonderful people) because it was almost a conversion process.

You have really nice teeth Zach! It's good that you smile so much so you can always flash those pearly whites :-D

I entered a sweepstakes for Garden State periphinalia, but I doubt I'll win...my bad luck with drawings defies math. Is there any other way fans could receive Garden State items?

Posted by: Joyce | Aug 10, 2004 10:43:41 PM

Zach, You are teh shit. Seriously man. Keep on keepin' on. Don't ever change. Unless you want to grow as a person. Because sometimes it's good to do that.

Posted by: Peter | Aug 10, 2004 10:45:07 PM

I was in Raleigh last week, and those motherfuckers are tough to crack. All I said was "In my country it is customary to touch another man's...how you say? chram." and let me tell you, i got the secret code what the fuck look, and it was scarier than the thought of Bush winning again...maybe not that scary. Anyway I bought the soundtrack online, ever so conveniently. You're the man Zach, and now listed as one of my myspace heroes. I'm out like a fat kid in dodgeball, respek.

Posted by: dan zarchy | Aug 10, 2004 10:45:31 PM

Hey Zach,
I wen't on a journey today looking for the soundtrack. The first place said they would not have it til the 26th. But I would not give up! The second place had only one copy left and it was mine! No, I did not have to knock over any old ladies to get it. I also purchased another cd by Guster, check them out. Anywhoo, exactly one day from today I will be seeing Garden State. I cannot wait!!

Posted by: Jaime | Aug 10, 2004 10:46:31 PM

Zach, when I saw the preview for Garden State months ago, I knew it would be good. I had no idea it would be so wonderful. Thank you for articulating so many things that I haven't been able to say. Thank you for not making a superficial film. I came home this year and had the "place where you keep your stuff" epiphany, and it felt really good to hear it said- like you said it for me, so now it's off my back. I have told everyone I can to see your film. I think so many of the words you wrote are lessons to live by. This is all we have; you have to be able to laugh at yourself, etc. I am going to the movie again tomorrow, so that I can really soak it in. I don't want to miss a moment.

Congratulations on such an incredible success. I hope someday to impact the number of lives I believe you will. Thank you.

Hey Zach,
Latest post cracks me up dude haha. Will you arrange petrol money for me to fly from New Zealand to see your movie? e-mail me with any ideas regarding this. Can't wait to see Garden State man I hear it's flapalous (that's a good thing).

Dobze.
Virgin was free of elderly women swarming the Yanni aisle due to the Mah Jonng championship series at the JCC; but I was nearly pummeled by a group of overly enthusiastic second graders rushing to the Raffi aisle for the release of the compilation of “Raffi’s Greatest Hits.” Despite those damn Raffi fanatics, I was able to snag a copy of the Garden State soundtrack. I had a strong urge to listen to the soundtrack so I headed over to Circuit City and began to "test" out their mini-Panasonic stereos. Regardless of my claim to be a Consumer Reports critic, the Circuit City employees were not amused because I was apparently ruining the ambiance Circuit City prestigiously strives to set. So I was forced to eject the soundtrack so that Circuit City could restore their reputable status with their customers by immediately cranking up the lyrics "Girl caress my body." Another victory for the plastic republic of America. Touché, Circuit City, Touché.

So today I was watching Comedy Central enjoying my third lazy day in the US since a 6 week sojourn in Germany and France, when all of the sudden amongst the mindless plugs for new shows and beer commercials there's this trailer for some movie with the cute guy from Scrubs. As the trailer progressed and I realized what the movie was like, my jaw literally dropped and i got the shivers. Congratulations for producing the only movie that within 30 seconds of even knowing it exsisted I had my shoes on, frantically interneting when the next show time was. Unfortunately, Detroit is not amongst the "selected cities" that are already blessed with the presence of your movie. I hope you're happy knowing you're getting my "sleep in everyday till noon at least" ass out of bed Friday morning to go see your movie. Thank you so much!!!!

Posted by: Lisa | Aug 10, 2004 11:02:26 PM

Hey Zach,

Been waiting for this movie since I saw the trailer with Eternal Sunshine. So, I planned with all my SoCal friends to go see it on my birthday, August 22nd at the nearby Westlake theater. Also have to tell you I went to three stores to find the Garden State soundtrack. It's a really great soundtrack and all but the real reason I went to the third store was because I just hate putting in the effort and walking away going "Darnit" and empty handed. Yes, I am the reason they invented those last place awards. Btw, sad Remy Zero broke up, they were amazing. Saw them and Pete Yorn play in New Jersey. Anyhoo, not to make this a book but I am really looking forward to this film. I just read your post on e-mails (as I obviously did replying to it right now....now....no, right now) and I understand if you can't squeeze it in (that sounds really presumptuous of me to believe I deserve one anyway with your busy schedule) but if you could I'd really like it if you could squeeze one in on My Birthday, Sunday August 22nd. Now I feel like a peddler, but hey...pride is over-rated. Take it easy and looking forward to GS and Scrubs!

P.S. Is it a Jersey thing to be in California and hate every same sunny day? I mean, do you not get tired of constant sun and no breaks of rain or seasonal changes? Oddly enough, really bugs me. Jersey born and proud of it. (Again, sorry for the length of this post.)

Posted by: Adam O. | Aug 10, 2004 11:04:31 PM

Hey Zach. When will they be sending out more copies of the CD? I wanted it but many people in the LiveJournal community said they could said the stores were all sold out :( The "Cabbage Patch Kid lunacy" is good because people like the music but bad because I like it and can't get a copy.
I used to have 4 rabbits. Don't get one unless you like cleaning up LOTS of crap.
It's good that you're chipper :) I can imagine the hectic filming schedule you must have.
Thanks for the gas money ;) The movie was fantastic (I just saw it on Saturday at a bitty theatre in Montclair.). You make me and the rest of us fans from the Garden State proud! always~ Tanya

PS- Is your blog syndicated on LiveJournal? That would be cool.

I saw the movie today with my best friend. I wish I could put into words how it effected me. I think it is one of those life-changing films. The kind where you don't quite realize it's true impact until later, when it has had time to sink in.

I already had sincere respect for you as an actor, but after seeing you in this role, knowing all the hats you had to wear, that respect has increased exponentially. Being an actress and producer myself, I know how hard it is to do so much at once on a set. Who knows, maybe we'll work together someday.

Posted by: Anna | Aug 10, 2004 11:09:32 PM

Pouting in Sacramento. The movie still isn't here and despite offers of sexual favors and chocolate (they took the chocolate, I guess my other charms are waning) there still isn't any sign of it in our fair 'burb. Tres depressing. But I DO get paid tomorrow and I'll body check old ladies if need be to get to that soundtrack. Keep up the good work Zach.

Posted by: Laura | Aug 10, 2004 11:11:31 PM

Went to Amoeba like I said I would but no soundtrack anywhere in the store, another disappointment after standing in line at Pink's for thirty minutes and giving up seeing that I didn't even want a hot dog that late at night. But I will try again later, have no fear, Limewire's sinister temptations will be overcome. My friends are dying to check the film in Utah, it's sad, there's going to be like four days where I won't be able to see Garden State, I guess I'll survive. Well since you like to hear good news: The boyfriend of the girl I'm in love with moved away! Now's my chance. I love the flick, Thanks for the code for the free air, I already have a full tank of gas.

Dear Assistant to Mr. Zach Braff,

So, when do you become sick of reading all these posts for Zach in order to entertain all his fans? Are you enjoying reading each and every daily entry, and summing up the overall consensus for the man who pays to feed your little maltese doggie? That is SUCH an L.A. dog. get rid of it. Buy a cat.

Personal assistants are not a bad idea...getting my own personal assistant is incentive enough to get off my ass and become famous already. There's nothing like hiring a cute and young overjoyed doe-eyed recent film school grad to do your bidding...and your laundry. Or wait? That would be the maid's job. My bad.

Regardless, Tell Zach that his personal assistant (aka "you") is doing a wonderful job. I think it's time to give you a raise. Come on, with the success of this movie Zach can afford it. Double your salary, and he will never get any food spit on by "employees".

signed,

just curious...

PS: Or maybe you're an Intern...

Zach, Garden State was amazing. but i think people tend to forget the brilliant work you do on Scrubs each and every week. however, the fact that you wrote, directed, and starred in this film (as well as landing the lovely Miss Portman) ceases to amaze me. mention me in a blog, i would love you (in a non-homosexual way) for the rest of my life haha.thanks. keep up the amazing work.

As I read through the most recent issue of MovieMaker magazine, I was delighted to come across the interview you had done about "Garden State." This discovery inspired me to write something to post. You claim to read most of these postings, despite my doubts, I thought I would give it a shot anyway. I will admit that I had been wanting to see this film ever since I saw the teaser trailer in the theatre. A week ago, I was fortunate enough to catch a free screening of the film. "Garden State" Did not dissapoint. I must applaud you for creating such a beautiful film. It was so refreshing to see a film that was so true to life. The characters of the film, are people I've met, and could immediately relate to. Not only did you write such compelling characters, you managed to get some superb preformances from your actors. Also, those subtle details that were incorperated, made the film more enjoyable to watch. The cinematorgaphy was incredible (you got some great shots). The editing and scene transitions, combined with the soundtrack weaved throughout the film, was a nice way to string everything together. The only thing I perceived to be a flaw within the film, was the ending. The flaw wasn't even significant enough to make me dislike the film. I had a difficult time believing in the ending, perhaps all of the growing up I've done in such a condensed period of time has turned me into a cynic. I suppose the ending just came all of the sudden, in a mad rush. After much thought, I began to wonder if the ending was supposed to evoke a certain reaction from the audience that matched what the protagonist was feeling in that specific moment. If that is the case, then the ending, along with several other points in the film, were very successful at making you feel like you were there experiencing what the character was experiencing. For the longest time, I've felt like something was wrong with me because I've already had a few mid life crises by the age of 19. I guess it's comforting to know that other individuals my age are going through the same type of emotional turmoil. It just seems like no one is going through anything similar to what you are going through, which makes you feel extremely alone/isolated and lost in the world. Not to mention it's easy to fall within a category of stereotypes, which makes it impossible for anyone to actively listen to you. It was nice to be able to feel like you were watching something real for once, especially since most of the big budget blockbusters aren't even close to accurately portraying any snippets of the human condition. After seeing this movie, I'm more determined to do what I want to do with my life. It takes a great work of art (of any medium) to inspire, so thank you for sharing this insight/perception with everyone. "Garden State" Was a brillaint film, and hope you continue to make films.

My aunt once fed me rabbit, but told me it was chicken. This was during the time I had my very first pet, given especially to me by my favorite teacher when she moved away. It was, of course, a rabbit named Bugs.

So I ate the tender, white meat and I liked it too. Does this mean I'm going to hell?

Posted by: Avara | Aug 10, 2004 11:48:19 PM

Zach, Mr. Braff, whatever (yeah, it's totally weird writing this to you),

Like everyone else here, I was incredibly moved by your film, and in a very personal way. Like Andrew, I grew up with a clinically depressed mother and that experience has colored my whole life. Like the character, I'm a 20-something trying to launch myself into adulthood and trying to find a way to leave that guilt and shame behind. To see those experiences in a film was rare and cathartic and it has meant more to me than you'll ever know.

The phenomenon of Garden State is so exciting because I feel like we're all young people coming out to support the work of other young people, and it gives me hope that perhaps our generation is more interested in rising with the ranks than from them. Or maybe it's just a great movie and I'm overanalyzing.

Anyway. Congratulations, and I'm looking forward to your next film... :)

ps: From one Jersey native to another, thanks for making us look good for once!

Oh man, that post just made my night.

Fortunately... I live near enough to a theater which is playing the film, so I don't need to ask for free gas and get funny looks :P
I finally saw it today. Don't know what to say... it was amazing. Just... thank you, Zach. I never got such a feeling of realism from a film until now. I loved every moment of it and your talent amazes me. I wish you the best.

With much love,
Kelly

PSS- There were LOTS of old ladies and old men in the theatre when I went to see the movie. I was pretty surprised. Ok, I'm done now.

^ That is the funniest reply on this site. Wait, maybe I'm not below it anymore...it's the one about you staring at people or something. I love reading the responses.

I gotta say that I love this site...your posts are very entertaining. I don't find it suprising at all that your movie is as great as it is because you seem to exude humor and wit (and draw it out of everyone around you).

After much deliberation, I've moved you into my 'What three people would you have dinner with if time and place didn't matter?' That makes it you, Nick Horby and Mies van der Rohe. Hehe, don't worry you didn't replace Jesus or Hitler or something...Micheal Crichton, but it would have been a little bit heavy on the novelists anyways.

I would be very interested to know who your three are...

A Beautiful and Terrible Thing 2004 104pages

An inconsistent young screenwriter pens an optioned script based on the last four years of his life and finds himself in an unfortunate situation where he begins to fall in love with the actress playing his former love interest.

The spark igniting this idea came to me one night after logging onto the web site for the small budget film Garden State. This website features various in depth interviews and behind the scenes footage generally reserved for DVD’s. I came across an interview where Natalie Portman discusses how writer/director/actor of Garden State, Zach Braff, can direct a scene while still acting within the scene. This one insight shaped everything. I would have a character playing myself and then have actors playing various friends of mine and all the while they’d be interacting with actors representing the real people whom they are playing.

Think of it as a behind the scenes look at behind the scenes. The film portrays the life of Mark Beutel, a struggling screenwriter, who must learn hot to adapt to success as opposed to failure. He has attempted writing feature scripts in the past but has never actually completed one until now. To his surprise the inspirational actors behind the movie, Natalie Portman and Zach Braff, have signed on for the film in which he is to play himself and direct. Zach’s character will play the role of Mark’s friend Devin while Natalie will play the role of his ex-girlfriend Laceydawn.

Mark’s script in the film is shot scene by scene although not in chronological order. A scene within a scene if you will, as the actor’s playing the characters in Mark’s script grow accustomed to their roles and learn things about each other, the people they are playing, and how their relationship with Mark is either similar or different to that of the real people their roles are based on..

To complicate things a relationship ensues between Mark and Natalie. There is a scene which depicts the breakup of Mark and Lacydawn just as Mark and Natalie realize the feelings they’ve garnered for each other. The scenes in Mark’s script begin to show how he never finishes anything he starts, whether he just gets distracted by the world around him or quits altogether, that is left for the audience to decide.

The scenes from Mark’s script flesh out his personality while giving a fleeting glimpse into the last four years of his life. The overall flow of the movie is based on the relationships that are created between himself and the people playing those most important to him.

A script within a script.

Haha, I needed that laugh at 8:30 in the morning when I have to leave for work so thanks.

Haha, great entry. If people don't want to spend extra on gas money, I hear the movie's getting a wide release on the 20th. Bit of a wait, but it's worth it. It's also worth it to travel a bit father to see it now, though.

My birthday's on Thursday (hooray for being born!), and hopefully I'll get to see the movie again that day. If not, I'll have to wait until the weekend. It's a long bus ride, and I've got a big Chinese-style dinner to make with my family, so I may not have time. It will be a tasty dinner, though. Oh my, yes.

And I'm having lunch at The Stinking Rose. Hooray for garlic! And garlic ice cream.

Yeah, I know nobody cares about my birthday, but I am just too damned excited to keep it to myself, so nyeh. ;)

Hi Zach,
do you have any idea when the movie will be coming to Europe, and especially to Finland, my home country? I only found a release date for Spain in Imdb. That's a bit too far from here, and I don't think your contract with gas stations covers Europe, does it? ;)

I've been following news about your movie for some time now, as well as this blog, and it seems like you have made quite a gem of a movie. It's not every film that elicits this kind of response from people. So, um... congratulations!

Hey,
I havent been able to see the movie yet (partly because theirs a few oceans between me and America) but I went onto the website and saw the new swimming pool clip and it was the funniest thing I've seen today (I actually saw a dog run off with a leg of meat and some people chase it by the way, bu
